After recovering from the pain of falling almost immediately on the floor after enlarging this... I must say that I like the bold linework, but that the shading could be a BIT smoother and... the face... well... I don't like it much either, to put it that way, Jake. But if you alter the style a bit, it could be very nice for the portraits if you're doing a headshot-only type of thing, or even for more proffesional work. Just have to work on your faces.
edit: also, I love the 4-inch-tall hair spike, but I don't think that the hair would look like that unless you were looking up at the person from a vantage point of 1-2 feet below and the person's hair was sticking out a bit.

sidra, are you sure your 14? you sound like my nan lol. the hair as freakishly tall because its sam off gwgc, he has cartoonly tall hair, and there is nothing wrong with that (take marge simpson for example) i think youve got a lot to say for someone who has none of their own work up for criticism.

:-D. Like I said, my scanner went to hell and I have a lot of schoolwork. All I have time for is posting for about 30-40 minutes net total while doing research and other things. If my comments offended you, then sorry. I just find the drawing to be very humorous.

The pink wrinkled lips, along with the creases from his nostrils to the tips of his mouth make him look more like a grandmother than Sam from your comics. The pink gives the look of lipstick (hopefully Sam isn't wearing any), and the wrinkles add to the "old". Take away the pink, also I wouldn't outline them so thick if at all, just adds more emphasis to them, and on a guy you don't want big puffy lipstick covered lips.

The first thing i said to myself when i read the title("i hate this) was 'well it hates you'. Ive seen the comics, and that thing looks like a drag queen with an affro(to put it bluntly, since i use hammers :P)

Don't forget about the nose. Nose often require heavy values (brightness and darkness) to show that it is going in or comming out. Currently, it is flat. Nose shape is also one of the key feature of our human face, this would probably take some research thou.
It is important to use value on where the eye locate, as the eyes sink down from your face into a socket.
Hmm... I should find that concept art link. They got alot of tutorial that may help.
....... Found it, although I didn't go deep searching (as that will be up to you on what you want to search)
