for the love of god, fix dyes
VitisVinifera
This one has been bugging me a long time. I can't believe they haven't fixed this.
There's a post in general where someone is asking, what color dye do I need to dye my chaos axe blue?
Well, shouldn't it take a blue dye? Nope....either dye remover or red dye to turn a chaos axe blue. Awhaaaaaaa??????!!!!?!?!?!?!?one
My necro: I want to turn his scars orange. Can't freakin do it to save my life, and I've looked at the dye charts. Then the facial scar thing...I can't make it turn ANY color.
Come on Anet. This is easy. Just fix it so that whatever color your dye is, that's the armor, regardless of profession, armor type, whatever.

Why would they need to change some "certain" item's dying property just because you can't use the dye chart?
Haggard
Have you ever thought that Chaos Axes dye weirdly because.. theyre CHAOS axes?
stickyballs
Did you ever think those are the *ONLY* two items in-game that dye weird? Fellblades dye oddly sometimes and most swords only have their hilts dyed. Dyeing isn't supposed to be perfect on one dye, that's why they have combos, mixes, recipes, etc. Chaos Axe dyes opposite and Scar Patterns are kinda weird, but just use a dye chart. It really is only two items. I would understand that you would want a fix if it was like black dye made it yellow or pink, but Chaos Axes glow so obviously they're going to dye quite differently. Every trying dying a Light Saber ?
EDIT: Haggard beat me to the point on Chaos Axes, lol.

1. It's rare. Ok; thats true. Black is harder to find than any other dye.
2. It looks cool. MiB FTW!
3. When you dye something in black, it actually dyes black!
Repairing the color scheme would improve the prices of all dyes. Red, blue yellow; all of them. Dye combinations become that much more important so you don't look like a clown and dye prices explode as more people use them, and more of them.
VitisVinifera
my 'pink' monk tats are fuscia. My green necrotic armor is pea green.
Red warrior armor.....yay came out red!
It shouldn't take dye charts that took insane amounts of empirical testing (and still dont seem to work) to do something that should be VERY SIMPLE

At least for the scar patterns and such.. it makes no sense that the facial scars dye differently than all the rest of them. The fact that different things dye differently is fine, but they should at least be uniform to themselves

notice all the dye question threads currently open?
useless, pointless and unnecessary to arbitrarily throw something in that makes no sense
how about when you create an assassin, you really get a ranger with warrior skills? the fun part is spending a few hours sorting out what is really what in the forums!

It truly should be true to real-world colour schemes.
And they really need a white dye. I have several sets of armour I would love to have dyed white. Not silver, not the crappy mix that turns out cream, but a real, authentic white!

he has a point in that why even bother labeling them as colors, if thats not what really happens.
bascially, anet could make one universal "random" dye, that dyes any random color, and you dont find out what the hell color it is, untill you use it. because at this current stage in the game, its so f-ed up that you might as well close your eyes and spin a color wheel to guess what you'd be getting...that at least has more consistency than reading the color of the dye listed in the name.

Chaos Axes Should be left how they are, Necro Tat's and so on should be changed.
for the people that can't read a Dye Chart...
http://img285.imageshack.us/img285/5...haosaxe3jr.jpg
while we're at it why not make a Color thing like the Guild Emblemer.. I think that would be awesome to be able to temporarily mix dyes and apply them to armor to see how the final result would look before investing 50k+ on black dyes and other dyes, just to have it not come out the color you wanted. (make it only last for a minute if everyone else can see it, or make it so only you can see it, like the guild emblemer).

I think i mentioned it before to another person, dont call God in such an issue, unless u mean gw gods.
Apart from that, id say that there should be a normal dye trader, but with a dye trader, just that he will work in another way.
It could work like this : u take off an item from ur equipment(as u might want to dye a item u cannot use) , and then there would be a dye chart , from which u choose the colour u want for the item. The dye guy would then calculate the price for example if u want that orange(just guessing here) , u need to pay for a dye, that costs for both red and yellow. So if red and yellow would cost like 200 each at trader each(not together), then u would buy that dye mix for 400 gold, having sure that u bought the right one.The dyes would be already mixed(mixture of max 4 dyes, min. 2). While buying it, you could see the item colour when u click on a colour in the dye chart. I think i didnt mess up anything in explaining that.

i already gave up trying to have things the colour i want it
i've spent more on black dyes than in my 15k bonelace and never got it REAL black.. it always turned out kinda weird grey thing
IMHO the chaos axe should be really chaotic not simply opposite color cos its rly predictable...

/signed to doing something about the dyes and how they work. Dye remover should be like a bleach and remove all color pigments making the item white. The dyes are then applied and the color dye used actually shows up. To make a darker color you mix the color dye with black just like real life and the ability to get different shades. I mixed 2 red with 1 black, because the red alone was too pinkish and the 1 red and 1 black was too dark, and got mixed dye that, when applied, turned out to look the same as if I used just one red. What a waste of money buying the black and other red. Applying multiple coats of the same color would give a deeper more rich outcome of that color to the point where (after 4 or 5) the color can't get anymore rich. If you have a piece of armor that is blue and you apply red then the piece of armor should turn purple, the red shouldn't replace the existing color. To replace the color, dye remover should be used before applying the new color. As for mixing, the last I checked, 500ml combined with 500ml gives you 1L not 500ml. One dye plus one dye should yeild 2 mix dyes.
A preview at the dye trader would be nice too. Nothing fancy just when you talk to her you chose the piece of armor you want to see dyed and select the dye(s) then press the preview button to see the outcome and price. Then you can either hit accept to make the changes or decline to go back and try different colors. The change in color would only exist in the preview mode unless you press accept then it's perminant. Allowing others to see the preview if they look your way would be good too. Can you picture entering a town, head for the dye trader and see a dozen people standing around her changing colors like the northern lights.
Dye is used to change the colors of fabrics including wood and skin not metal. To change the color of metal portions of your armor then you should be able to do so at the armor crafter and see the weapon crafter for the metal portions of your weapon. Weapons like the storm bows and chaos axes are unique. The storm bow is the color of an electric arc and has what looks like electricity flowing all around it and therefore shouldn't be able to change color. The chaos axe looks like it too is made up of energy and therefore shouldn't be able to change in color however it could drop as a different color at random. They could make it so those weapons can have their color change but it would require seeing a weapon crafter in the FoW. The eternal bow is the color of ecto and shouldn't be able to change color (not by conventional means) and may be done but require seeing a weapon crafter in the UW.

Why do people have to flame players simply for suggestions? I think its really immature and makes me not even want to post on these forums. Grow up and let people state their own opinions.

I agree. I hate that the colors of dyes don't usually come out how they're sopposed to, especially mixed dyes. Normal color mixing doesn't work either. They may mix to the color it should look like, but once it's on armour, it's totally different. I had a pink once that turned brown on armour, a blue mix that turned orange, and a green mix that turned purple. It's annoying how these colors don't work..

It'd also be great if red dye didn't turn 90% of armors pink, and if you could dye each area of an armor seperately, rather than not being able to die most of it at all. Also, while it isn't real important, I think you should be able to choose silver and black for starter armor and pvp armor.

LifeInfusion
I don't think they should change anything. They should add something like the PvP character creation that shows what dye mixes you need for your armor. That would be 300X more useful...although it kills the money sink somewhat.
Jessyi
I never thought of dye as being a real money sink. For as often as I dye my armor (read: "once, ever") I have collected and kept at least 20 of every color except black of which I only have found three. At a cost of 150 or so for every color except silver or black, you could buy 20 dyes for 3K. Not much of a sink, and if you've got any sort of idea of what you want to get from your dye mixing it's doubtful you'll spend more than that. Even if you want to sit there and mix together 40 dyes instead of finding a dye chart, you're not going to break the bank.
The biggest problem I think though is when you dye something a single color, say red, and it turns blue. That's just broken. That's not a money sink, it's poor design. Scar patterns are especially horrible for this. Dyes really do need a good fixing, but barring that, any kind of preview palatte would suffice. Anything to avoid the rude surprises that dyes are prone to delivering.

/signed male FoW ele armor you cant get "true black" WTF
Megamanfan
Get rid of all dyes in the game, but keep dying as a money sink (even more so) by making each piece of armor cost 4k to dye. That opens up a color wheel at the Dye Trader and you move it around until you find the color you like (don't forget to write down the values he gives you!). There, no more guess work.
Sparks Dawnbringer
I've been told that quild wiki has a chart for these strange dye problems. Maybe you should look there.
azuresun
What I don't understand is why when you mix two vials of dye you only get one vial of the new color instead of two. Imho you should still have the same quantity when you are done mixing instead of just losing half of it.

thanks for all the /signed everyone. I'm glad I'm not the only one frustrated with this arbitrarily introduced complexity to something that should be as straight forward to red=red/black=black, etc.
And more thanks for ppl who had alternative ideas on how to acheive this.
And more more thanks for ppl who weren't cool with the flaming that happened early on in this thread.
Now just hope this gets the right person's attention.

I dyed my collectors monk armor black and got pale grey
and I thought they did fix this, when I was rolling my nec for pvp the other day, it took green dye to make my face scar green, instead of the usual blue. Maybe thats the only thing they changed.
