2 things for me. First was finishing my 15k armor for my Ranger. But, I made my own dye for it, and that took a while. Quite satisfying after everything was said and done.
After that, buying a 3/-1 Vampiric Sword mod for a lucky UW chest drop for a measly 6.5k. It has become one of my favorite toys, now that I've gotten used to it.

All the +5 defense mods I bought for 500-1000. I love my +10 Defensive Staves of Defense, and feel deprived when I have to wield a mere +8 for another attribute.
But the prize may be the -50 HP item I bought for 50 gold over merchant price.
Given that the guy was a few seconds away from merchanting it at the time of the deal, I don't even have a conscience problem with it.

I once sold an Ecto for 2 obsidian shards, then sold the 2 obsidian shards for 3 ectos and sold the 3 ectos for 7k each... lol. I laughed for a while at that one.

Actually, the best gold I ever spent was last night. I spent 3k on three UnderWorld runs teaching someone how to 55 in UW. We did about 6 runs total [he paid for the other ones] and completed 1 full smite run, and only one ecto dropped, so I gave it to him. Needless to say he was overjoyed. I was happy with myself, since so few people have the patience to help newer players. (:
