Anet & Scammers
cainvonlucifer
I just recently watched a very good friend of mine lose everything to basically what you would still call a scammer.. and in my whole time playing guild wars ive seen it happen again and again... 1 thing tho... why doesnt anet become more strict on scammers and make better trade capabilities to completely prevent scams... it would be easy like make a second trade screen reading off what u have just accepted to.. another thing.. i dont understand how the hell people can sit there and back stab ther best friend they have known for 5 months for pictulated iteams on a video game (you know who im talking about). and another thing about Scammers and the mention of..
I honestly see where you guys are coming from and completely respect that decision to not allow scammers names be posted on this page because it is very easy to try and ruin a persons reputation as maybe pay back or merely because they dont like them.. but i belive you guys should maybe work with anet to prevent scammers on guru.. just like anet should be more strict on guildwars. i didnt pay 50 bucks to play a game and then to just get ripped off 10 months into playing it..and have to start all over.. and i belive everyone agree's with me on that 1. half the scamers i have ment in my time playing honestly think a 2-3 weeks bann is worth the 5-10mil they scam and thats per scam before they get banned. but its w/e just like you guys said u dont have a say in this and niether do i....
i no im most likely going to get a bann for this thread... and its most likely going to get closed but i just ask that you let people read it before its done with i think everyone should atleast have a say before so.

Havnt been using Guru long but ill never 4get a hilarious thread i read not to long after i registered. Basicaly a guy selling stuff for a member who is i guess a notorious scammer, RR er something. Everyone had there two cents to put in but that was along w/ there bids on wat i guess was scammed gear
"Insert Name, you piece of #@%$ scammer etc..etc....100k+ectos" lol
Thought this was very telling, glean wat u will from it

maroni
thread shouldn't be here, but my 2 cents...u deserve it if u get scammed...the trading window is enough of a scam protection. u know exactly what's going in, and what's going out (unless you're too stupid to check when the scammer closes and switches item or cash amount). don't get me wrong, i absolutely despise dishonest traders and how they've ruined our creative trading ideas (ex. running), but keep tabs on your own shit. If it can't be taken care of in the window, Anet didn't design the sale/trade to take place and it's not their fault. DEAL WITH IT.
leprekan
And it would take Anet 10 minutes to code in an extra digit space in the trade window and storage ...
Hell Raiser
even if you have known someone on guild wars for months doesn't mean they wont get greedy, I never trust anyone with my gold, and I look at what is being traded before I hit accept, it is quite easy to avoid scams, just need to be smart about it. I think scammers do ruin the gaming experience but that's life, there is always going to be the greedy people in rl and ig just try to stay away from them, it is just virtual gold after all...
cainvonlucifer
thers alot more ways to scam than the trade window.. but it would narrow down alot of them. like say maroni ur best friend was helpig you transfer iteams to your other account.. and he didnt trade them back.. like say everything you made in this game.. would the best response from Arena net after getting your report be "Deal with it"?..i think your response would differ from that when experiancing it yourself
Hell Raiser
well you know how you handle that? DON'T TRUST ANYONE WITH YOUR GOLD... as I said that is what I do and works magnificantly
Tommy
just avoid buying and selling expensive items
like i only sell collector's item and unid gold armor for a few k now.scammers are probably not interesting in my 1k items.

cainvonlucifer
lol..
there are times when you may need stuff to be transferd. but ... yes i can see how that would work magnificantly
there are times when you may need stuff to be transferd. but ... yes i can see how that would work magnificantly
Tommy
if you dont have anything valuable
there is nothing you can lose:d just dont spend a penny at any items. use only items from collectors..like me only using collector's itmes
good and cheap!nothing better than collector's and customize all the itmes on you .they can scam the customized items from you
and also your armor:0 i pretty much only spend money on my fissure set now.

Foe
Even in game the second a there a mention of a scammer the apathetic shows up claiming "dont be stupid", "they deserve it" . Thats not the point.

I am going to try to get my hands around what is being suggested here, and kind of write it back out in the terms that I think would be understood by myself and people that have the same small brain capacity as me.

Anet-
Over the past 12 months of great gaming experience, we have found a serious flaw in your game and some of its players. These select "players" are here to enjoy the game, but at some one else's expense. We call these select "players", scammers. Obviously you know what the term implies. The problem seems to be that people cannot place the things they need to place in the trade window. For example, only being able to trade 100k at a time, only having 7 slots with which to trade items, etc. Everyone in the GW community knows that the inflation of this game is real and will continue to inflate as new things come out. So, with the growing inflation that we have to adjust to, why can't you adjust with us? A valid question that deserves a validated answer.
Solution-
Change the amount of money that can be traded in one transcation process. Also, change the amount of slots in the trade window to 10 or more (you have no idea how much 3 or slots would help).
I know that there would be re-coding involved, but it is to satisfy the people that are keeping you in business. Do not mistake me, I am trying very much to be sincere an genuine. I just want you to understand that we want to have the gaming experience that we have paid for. You all of have done a great job thus far, why disappoint us now?
Thank you very much for your time and hope to see some improvements down the road.
Sincerely,
Imperfection

A discussion thread is more suited to the discussion forum, so it was moved here. It's not going to get anyone banned unless people start pointing fingers.

You missed the point ... on purpose would be my guess. I have not been scammed IE I do check the trade windows. The point is Anet could help MANY of us that deal in high end trades by just encoding another digit. Why should we have to hang onto 2000 ecto ... when the ecto price hiccups we lose a couple of million dollars or more.
Imperfection
Leprekan, you are so damn right. Why should we lose millions because we have to hold some trading collateral? The market takes a hiccup and there goes your client base for this game. Throw in that extra digit and the complaints will go away. Plain and simple.

You are easy scammable, when you:
If one of these points fit you, than you are a prime target for every scammer in the game.
- Are looking for a short cut to the end of the game.
- Looking for 1337 items, for cheap.
- Don't play the game, but simply tag along with others.
- You are a minor, who does things unsupervised.
- Play the game for hours, without taking a brake.
- When you rush through actions and quests.
- When you think that trust will get you far in this game.
- When you smoke dope or drink alcohol while playing.
- When you tell about your private live, just because someone is nice to you, is a leader of your guild or you know that person for a week.
- You brag about how much ectos or gold you have.
If one of these points fit you, than you are a prime target for every scammer in the game.

Not to be rude BUT ... I think more than half the player base is minors who have not seen a parent in days=p

my blue ascalon bow is 15^50, 10/10 +30, and guess what, it does the more damage then my gold eternal bow 15^50, 10/10 +30, can you guess which one i use more often. and before anyone says no it doesnt, ill tell you my ascalon bow is customized, and because of the ridiculous prices you people pay for skins, i havent gotten it customized, one day i may sell. but my advice is dont pay for items just for looks unless you can afford to have it stolen, or hacked.
and as far as trading between your two accounts, either use a laptop or crappy desktop, one you wouldnt use to play the game just to transfer, or go to a lan store and rent 2 computers for about 10 minutes, and if you know the manager or owner well enough he may not even charge you. and guess what you may not even get scammed by yourself. unless your just tooo greedy.
Inureface
OK don't turn this thread into a damn argument about how the scammer is right and its always your fault. The past threads that talked about that were locked for a reason. There was a thread in the dev tracker where gaile got pissed off and threatened to report that guy herself. That just shows it takes a damn anet staff member to get some bans going and how f'ed up the current system is. They won't even tell you if they did anything to the scammer but rest assured, we enforce our rules stricly blah blah (for devs only). People make mistakes, how damn hard is that for everyone to realize!? I bet every single one of you guys who are going I never get scammed because I'm so careful, you'll get scammed out of most of your wealth, but you won't post about it here since you'll get the same kind of shit that you're giving the OP.

if they are willing to do it you do it in much smaller chunks to minimise risk.
the first big warning sign in that case is the other person saying
*DONT YOU TRUST ME? I AM IN A HURRY.*
RUN LIKE HELL
2nd thing is the repeated
*I WAS IN A REAL HURRY AND DIDNT CHECK SO HE GAVE ME GOLD INSTEAD OF PLAT*
IF YOU ARE TOO BUSY (OR LOADED) TO CHECK DONT TRADE*
Sir Skullcrasher
my thought is... DTA "Don't Trust Anyone" in trading. He/she might seen nice or might offered great items or weapons at great price but beware, scammers has way to attract your attention than take everything you have. Most of the trades that i have done, i usually stare at the trade windows to ensure the items or golds is correct before hitting accept. I agree that A-Net could have implement another coding to make trading safe but guys, Chapter 2 is coming and i'm sure they're working hard so that Chapter 2 trade system wouldn't be messed up like it is.

I guess maybe Anet wouldn't lose revenue if kids will get the game anyways :S
Jessyi
Maybe in Barney's Happy Play Funland it's reasonable to expect ANet to bend over backwards to implement an idiotproof trade system.
Here are a few ideas:
How about an in-game trade checklist you can use to help you? Have you moused over the item being traded? Check. Are you being offered platinum and not just gold? Check. Have you checked the value of this item with a friend or reliable source? Check.
How about maybe for a trade to go through, you have to wait 45 seconds after both players hit "accept", with the option to cancel the trade before the 45 seconds are up so that you have time to double check everything in the trade window?
I'm too lazy to think of any more, and these ideas are stupid anyways. I don't think in real life or in the game world, at any point in history, anywhere in the universe has scamming been eliminated. No matter how moronproof the trading process might be, there will always be people that are too unwise/ignorant/hasty/stoned/just plain stupid for thier own good. Sadly, "trusting" belongs on that list as well, but that's life. Scamming is such an age old reality that there was even a latin phrase coined eons ago describing the best way to avoid it:
CA...VE...AT EMP...TOR.
Learn it and learn it well. Scammers may be intolerable peices of scum that deserve to die Die DIE but seriously folks, YOU are the only person that YOU can rely on to prevent scamming from happening to YOU. I have never been scammed. People have attempted to scam me, but it has never worked. Any trade worth making is worth taking 5 seconds to doublecheck. It's not ANet's job to protect people from themselves. As in life, so to do the same rules apply in game: be careful dammit. Nobody's looking out for you but yourself.
-Jessyi
edit:
Yeah, I fear that someday soon I'm going to forget everything I've learned playing the game and dealing with scammers, and I will somehow inadvertently forget how important it is to be careful when trading and accidently lose all my wealth. /sarcasm

Hi
Scammers are annoying, the unavoidable ones, (for example those that let you run, and even if you do ask for payment a portal before going somewhere, its till been so much of your time that has been wasted)
The worst sor tare those that buy dyes in presearing for cheap. I personally think a-net shoul put a dye trader in pre jus tto show new players the prices of dyes (maybe even make it non-functioning (ie i have no stock left, but these are my prices).
And some scams arent hard to avoid, yet others are harder. Personally i will always double-triple check what i get and what im giving away. However hen running someone, it is very hard to avoid (and then there are other scams, like getting someone else to pay an entrance fee, then just getting them killed) which are almost impossible to avoid, without just avoiding an entire section fo the game

For one thing adding extra slots or another digit space won't stop scammers it will just give them the potential to scam more cash from people. It is not ANet's responsibility to keep you from being scammed. It's your responsibility. It's common sense people. All it takes are the same habits you have in real life. I'm sure you don't walk around advertising the amount of money you have in your pocket so why brag in game? All it does is make you a target. I'm also relatively certain that you only purchase things from reputable merchants and if you don't then I would hope that you check out the products before you buy them as well as keeping an eye on the terms of the purchase. Every other day there is a thread about this or that scam and what ANet should do about it and blah blah blah. I'm sorry but if you can't be bothered to show a little situational awareness then you deserve what you get. Outside of a hack there is no way I'll ever be scammed and here is why. I show common sense. I do not advertise my wealth in game. I only trade with reputable people and usually I use the auctions on this site to do that and even then when I get in game I always check the item over very carefully to make sure that it is the item I bid on. In fact when I'm writing the person who placed the item up for sale I always make one of the terms of the exchange be that I have the opportunity to verify the item's authenticity before I put any money up in the trade window. Most people will be cool with things like that if they aren't well then that should tell you something. People that are eager to make you hurry up and trade are usually scamming. You can argue all day long about schedules and blah blah blah but you and I both know that one of the ways scams succeed are by rushing people to the point where they make a mistake. Almost every con involves a time limitation or the illusion of a limited time frame for the pigeon to profit from the offer.

Can you say how your friend lost everything.
You can't keep scammers off a game, they are everywhere.
YOU CAN, be smart and not get scammed. Its your own problem if you got scammed, you can only blame yourself when you are scammed. Who clicked submit offer, you did.
