W/Mo Solo Troll Farming Guide with Video!
Gigamaster89
I realized that there is already one but I felt like posting this anyway since I'm bored. I've been on Guild Wars all day today, did Troll runs for the first time (52 runs) and worked with windows movie maker for the first time, decided to type, and came up with this.
Why farm mountain trolls:
It's EASY.
Your looking for money.
Your looking for max Fellblades/Axes/etc.
Your looking to unlock various weapon upgrades.
Does not require expensive equipment.
You want to do short runs yet make a profit at the same time.
Because you can.
Requirements:
Droknar's Forge
W/Mo Level 20
An Axe
Drok's Armor
Attention span
Skills listed
The Outfit:
An axe with preferably max damage. Mods doesn't matter much for this build, although it DOES help.
Shield doesn't matter, but the better...the better. If you don't have an uber shield (which probably explains why your reading this), I recommend the Crimson Carapace Shield, which can be acquired from Lord Dorn Lendrigen, north of Thirsty River for 2 Bleached Shells. (will cost you 2k max from other players.)
Full Drok's Armor. Preferably Full Gladiators (energy boost) along with Ascalon OR Knight's Boot. Socket everything with runes if you can,
Budget
- Major Vigor
- Major Absorption
- Minor Tactics
- Minor Strength
- Minor Swordsmanship
Rich (why are you farming? XD)
- Superior Vigor
- Superior Absorption
- Minor Tactics
- Minor Strength
- Minor Swordsmanship
You can sup. every rune although I don't know how the HPs will work out.
The Outfit [Further Testing]:
Socket a Superior Tactics rune for max tactics.
Skills:
- Cyclone Axe - Your main farming/damaging/leeching skill, hitting everything at once is the point of this build.
- Executioner's Strike - To pick off single targets should you need to, and as a skill you can use while Cyclone is charging.
- Bonetti's Defense - Use when Gladiator is recharging, used to replenish energy. Keep in mind that if you use a skill, this ends.
- Gladiator's Defense [E] - Keep this up ALWAYS when avaliable, your main damage source.
- Sprint - To aggro and run to location, not really necessary.
- Vigorous Spirit - Cast this whenever you cast Gladiator's, the recharge on Glads and this both ends at the same time.
- Live Vicariously - Keep up at all times, with Vig Spirit and the stats listed below, your gaining 20HP PER hit, and Cyclone hits 6-12 times...most of the time.
- Defensive Stance - Back-up, used when your Cyclone Axe gets interupted and neither of your 2 defense skills is ready.
*Shield Stance/Wary Stance/Disciplined Stance can work as well in place of Defensive Stance.
*To the Limit can take place of something as well, helps charge up Bonetti's.
*You can replace Executioner's with another offensive spell if you like.
*Mending works nicely as well.
Skills [Further Testing]:
Defensive Stance --> Shield Stance - You can cyclone while this is up and this will now be incorporated into the build for main use.
Vigorous Spirit --> Balthazar's Spirit - Adrenaline AND Energy so you can use Shield Stance instead of Bonetti's. The extra healing helps but can be neglected, with this, you have less chance of being interupted and more chance of Cyclone-ing without getting killed.
Stats:
- 9 Healing Prayers
- 10 Axe Mastery
- 10 Tactics
The 30 Pts. from the two attribute quests were NOT included. Those can be placed at where ever your heart desires.
Stats [Further Testing]:
- 8 Healing Prayers
- 8 Strength
- 8 Axe Mastery
- 12 Tactics
This includes the points from the attribute quests, less healing but more damage. With equipment, tactics should be maxed out, allowing max damage and time from Gladiator's Defense.
To Get There:
1. Get out of Droknar's Forge and into Talus Chute.
2. Cast Live Vicariously. (you can cast it later, doesn't really make a difference.)
3. Sprint
4. Hug the left wall, keep going until you see an opening on the left to the cave.
5. Ignore the monsters on your way. You can lead the trolls outside inside with you if they are seperate, but make sure you lose the Avicaras. Use Sprint if necessary.
6. Run into the cave, aggro the huge group (generally 6-12) and go all the way to the top until you gather all the trolls together (not the bosses), you should now have a group of ~10-16 trolls depending on how it spawned.
To Get There [Further Testing]:
Cast Balthazar's Spirit when you leave town, cast Live Vicariously when your at the entrance of the cave or while your slap Gladiator's Defense on.
To Kill Them:
1. Cast Live Vicariously if you haven't already.
2. Cast Gladiator's Defense right when everything is starting to surround you.
3. Vigorous Spirit.
4. Target the closest troll (Hit C)
5. Cyclone Axe, your Adrenaline should have instantly maxed out (if there is more than 6 trolls.)
6. Hit the targeted troll with your offensive skill (Executioner's)
7. Gladiator's should be blinking now, cast Bonetti's Defense.
8. Cyclone Axe, doing so will end Bonetti's.
9. Re-Cast Bonetti's.
10. Cyclone, repeat Cyclone -> Bonetti's -> Cyclone until Gladiator's Defense is ready.
11. Repeat step 2 and up until all of them are dead.
*Never cast anything else during Bonetti's besides Cyclone unless your 100% positive you can survive.
*Have a defense up at ALL time! (Glads/Bonettis/Defensive)
To Kill Them [Further Testing]:
[Baltazar's Spirit should be up already]
1. Gladiator's Defense
2. Live Vicariously if you didn't before you aggro.
3. Cyclone Axe
4. Cyclone Axe
5. Shield Stance
6. Cyclone Axe
7. Cyclone Axe
8. Cyclone Axe
9. Gladiator's Defense
10. Cyclone Axe
11. Cyclone Axe
12. Bonetti's Defense
13. Cyclone Axe
14. Bonetti's Defense
15. Cyclone Axe
16. Bonetti's Defense
17. Cyclone Axe
18. Gladiator's Defense
19. Cyclone Axe/Executioner's Strike the rest
The End:
- Pick up all items
- ID everything
- Salvage all Raven Staffs EXCEPT for:
>Good mods/rune
>Precious mod
- Salvage everything else that you do not wish to keep for Iron Ingots and Wood Planks, occasionally Steel Ingots and various crap.
- Sell Wood Planks and Iron Ingots to others for 10G per.
- Sell all Mountain Troll Tusks to others for AT LEAST 20G per, if you feel like running to the collectors and make it 25G per, be my guest, but the time spent doing so, you would have made much more farming trolls.
Conclusion:
~Roughly 3 minutes a run.
~About 600G MINIMUM per run from profit after salvaging and selling to others.
~168XP per troll meaning a good 2000XP or so per run, alot more with scroll.
~Bring someone along and powerlevel them for 1.5k-2k per skill point. Tell them you get drops and they provide scrolls.
~Have Fun!

Nice Guide.... but IMO Trolls drops are VERY bad... I know cuz I power LVL people with my 55 monk in the troll cave... and its VERY VERY seldom you'll get a good drop!
but still a very nice guide
but still a very nice guide
Shadow-Hunter
The trolls can give some quick, and easy money... ofc you dont earn that much but if you are low on the cash and dont have the gold to make a 55 monk and then go UW, then slap some stuffs on the War you have and go kill some trolls.. fast, easy and a bit of profit.. Also they give nice exp
also the nice looks good..
~Shadow

also the nice looks good..

MirageCloud
ALWAYS have 16points in tactics.
Shadow-Hunter
umm... 16 points why?.. And why allways?.. Think it would be pretty sucky to have 16 point tactic in pvp.... could you explain why 16 points there and why you allways should have it..

~Shadow I think it's painfully obvious that this isn't PvP. Regargless, 16 tactics is nice because so much damage is comming from Glad's Defense, why not get all you can out of it?
I'm not convinced so much healing is nessacary, but it certainaly makes the run easier, and that's a good thing, I guess.

Some info:
-Mountain trolls drops, as said already, are very very bad. The odds to find max fellblades are close to nothing. The best, after 2-3 runs, you can get from this are dye and Shiverpeaks keys. If you want fellblades, farm avicaras.
-Farm trolls for xp. When you farm a lot, you sometimes fall upon xp scrolls. Keep then until you have some, then farm Mountain trolls, only for xp, with them.
-This build is far from being the most effective, even if it's still okay, not by equipment or attribute points, but by the build. Armor is weak (no boost like Dolyak, the ultimate farming skill), any stance interrupted or error (yes it can happen) will make you die. In addition, relying only on Glads or Cyclone to kill is very long. I find The riposte/deadly riposte build a lot quicker, especially if mixed with Glads. Use the excellent Search button of this forum.
- Don't salvage if you're looking for gold. Instead identify all, even white items, most of time it will raise highly the selling price of the item.
- After 2-3 runs, the only abundant drop will be mountain troll tusks. Keep then until 60-70 of them. Then, go in Snake Dance to find the mountain troll tusk collector (Merin something -by running it's quicker). Beware there is bosses around there. Exchange Tusks for staves, then sell them to a merchant (5 mountain trolls tusks = 40 g, a staff=125 g, you gain 85 g/staff in this trade).

EDIT - Disciplined Stance is also a good choice =)
Thanks for the feedback.
EDITED - I'll check out increasing tactics, didn't realize the damage goes over max when >12.
And yeah, I been told me feet was huge, is it the ascalon boots? lol.

Why does everyone feel compeled to play W/Mo. I played through the game with one and found it all unsatisfying and unefficient. You have to spread your skill points out too much for what so you can heal. Well you know you dont have to heal damage that you dont take. If I get bored and want to do trolls, grawls warriors, forgottens, sand worm, avicara fierce, griffons, or minotaurs I much prefer to use a good straight warrior riposte build. 15 Strength 16 tactics a furious sword and a -2 in a stance shield,
run
riposte
deadly riposte
Gladiators defense
shield stance
defensive stance
heal signet
dolyak signet
watch yourself(or sprint)
you take practically no damage and in two cast of gladiators roughly 60 seconds most all warriors should be dead. And it works wonders on bosses

ok kinda low on everything except health ^_^
Step 1 : take suprior axe mastery and tactics
step 2: lower healing to about 8/7 and take a vampiric axe 15% (while enchated) with cusotmization
step 3: swap defensive stance for watch yourself

Further testing shows...
Vigorous Spirit can be replaced for Balthazar's Spirit, this way, vig is gone so you don't have to worry about being interupted and Balthz does help to an extent.
Shield Stance > Defensive Stance, it let's you attack.

Cool video, been working on those myself, not sure about the upload process.
anyway, used your build awhile ago, except used a 3/1 vampric haft i think.
here's a pic of same farming spot, with a test war/ranger build. not nearly as effecitve, but i was just testing out Victory is Mine, just to see if its worth equipping.
i agree with Iori Shozu, riposte build is my favorite and its so strong. 16 in tactics rocks. fun in random pvp as well.

WOOT! purple raven staff.....
when whuup bumbuul casts frozen soil he stands upright lol
edit: i'd say you can make a living out of this if you stay with it long enough...when you salvage the raven staffs and bows you get alot of wood from it so its not that bad. I made about 750g after 2 runs selling to merchant

I have YET to get a gold raven staff...
I got gold wingblades, tall shields, and various gold axes, some pretty decent. I unlocked ALOT of weapon mods.
Droks armor is more or less necessary considering you will get hit by 25% of the attacks.

If you like farming these trolls, 55 it... with either necro, monk or mesmer....
troll cave takes like 2 minutes.... but what makes it more profitable is taking out a bunch of the dang birds also...
if you want to farm for profits sake.... IDS farm... or Ettin Farm..... or Titan Farm... or SOLO FoW.... Troll cave is more for powerleveling...
When I used to IDS farm I averaged like 1 IDS every 3 runs or so.... runs take longer but thats 25k + other drops and chest along the runs... and you usually hit 3+ chest on the way.... and you can also kill the Tundra Giants... got a couple fellblades from them!
AND MAKE SURE to change your farming spots every other run.... Troll drops suck as it is... with anti-farm kicking in I have one thing to say about drops, LMFAO.... I hate powerleveling there... but if i'm gunna farm there to lose anti-farm, might as well make a few k from a customer

you do know that healing breeze acualy makes the run more dangerous ,
w/mo casts healing breeze followed by cyclone axe.....*trolls atttempt to disrupt breeze , they miss and hit cyclone axe >_<*
watch yourself > breeze
abd by the way, YOU sound like the noob with your seriously messed up spelling + the use of the word "nub"

You only use healing breeze when galds defense on...it works well and keeps your health up while reapplying VIG

I let your stupid comment before slide, but this, come on?
The only thing having 8 level 20s show is that you need to go outside.
What dont feel no pain mean was that if you have healing breeze, you have TWO times the chance of having your cyclone interupted.

i have a different build but it takes too long maybe ill try this one

A much faster and more efficient build for farming trolls as a warrior would be this:
Troll Farmer
Warrior/Monk
Level: 20
Strength: 5 (2+3)
Axe Mastery: 15 (12+3)
Tactics: 16 (12+4)
Healing Prayers: 2
- Cyclone Axe (Axe Mastery)
- Bonetti's Defense (Tactics)
- Gladiator's Defense [Elite] (Tactics)
- "Watch Yourself!" (Tactics)
- Disciplined Stance (Tactics)
- Sprint (Strength)
- Executioner's Strike (Axe Mastery)
- Live Vicariously (Healing Prayers)
Preferable axe would be 15% while enchanted, +7 AL vs Physical, 3:1 Vampiric, which does more damage and heals you for a lot when you cyclone axe. Shield would be Crimson Carapace or a -2 dmg while in stance/-2 dmg while enchanted shield. Pretty self explanatory, but it's MUCH more efficient than the OP's build. And yes, you survive JUST fine with 2 healing and ONLY Live Vicariously.
EDIT: If anyone can find a more efficient build for soloing trolls as warrior primary, I would LOVE to know. Post it here and take the troll efficiency challenge.

Not sure why you died on that last picture, I normally lure all in that cave. Never died before. Maybe your not hitting bonettis quick enough after using cyclone. You do have to be pretty quick to take minimal damage.

I think it was because instead of hitting Bonettis, I hit Print Screen XD

(you'll move 33% slower but you're not moving anyway) Edit: I meant shield stance Wexnar
Can I replace Gladiator's Defense with something else? Im 14 lvl W/Mo and im not even near to desert, so i cant cap GD =<

Edit: I meant shield stance Disciplined stance is very much a filler. You can do the run completely with out it, but it makes it easier. I'll try out Shield Stance, though, sounds good to me. Pruts
I wouldn't really call it a filler; it's great to start your farm combo.
While all trolls are still running towards you, activate it. Once all trolls have surrounded you, use Gladiators. you take minimal damage and deal maximum ![]() Pruts
and Wexnar: Gladiators defense is pretty much mandatory for this build. It's your main damage dealer.

You can't replace it but you can do it without it. It'll just take forever since your relying on Cyclone to kill them, max Axe Mastery FTW =)
Or, without GD, try out the riposte builds floating around. EDIT - Edits made based on Further Testing. jimmyhats
im not gonna lie, troll cave is mighty easy.
the w/mo cyclone build is pretty generic, and you seem to have posted a somewhat ineffective version of it. 8 heal, 3 str, 13 axe, 14 tactics... superior tactics rune Lord Osi
Very nice guide, I'v did about 50 runs?
Rare Fellbalde (was req. 11 13% enchanted) Black Dye Dozen's of Common Dyes Rare Compisite Bow Rare Half Moon Shiverpeak keys 6+ Rare Wooden Buckler Its decent, I cant remember all the rares, but I'v gotten plenty. Nice guide lilnate22
ya its good
but idk i used my own thing... i used mending and doyalak instead of sprint def stance and it did me wonders gj man great build Texas Snyper
Interesting setup. I created mine out of my ettin build but got moddified for the trolls, heres mine and it works beautifully for me. Although my explaination repeats a lot of the OP, there are several key differences do to the differences of the build. Unfortunatly i dont have video. If any body wants one, pm me and ill think about making one.
W/Mo Cyclone Axe (axe) Watch Yourself (tactics) (last 10 secs) Bonetti's Defense (tactics) (last 10 secs) Glads Defense [elite] (tactics) (last 10 secs) Dolyak Signet (strength) (last full 20 secs till recharge) Live Vicariously (heal) Balthazar's spirit (smite) Mending (heal) Healing - 8 Strength - 15 (12+3) Axe Mastery - 9 (5+4) Tactics - 12 (9+3) smite - 2 (all your leftover) full glads w/ ascalon boots and axe hat sup vigor, major absorb (yes major), sup strength, sup axe, sup tactics 3/1 vamp axe of defense (+5 armor) tanzits cleaver for running there (+30 hp) grognar's defender (same as -2 dmg +45 health stance shield) DO NOT BE AFRAID IF YOU HEALTH DIPS TO LESS THAN 1/3. if you hit cyclone axe will full troll agro you will be healed for 13 health per troll (3 from vamp + 10 from LV), thats AT LEAST 200 health if you have full troll agro. What I do is mending right away and then start running to the cave. If there are any mobs in the way, I will put up balthazar's spirit (for bonus E while running to cave) and then run to cave. they always drop aggro by the time i enter the cave. If they dont, they will as I'm grabbing the troll agro. If you do shack agro before cave let yourself get healed up and run to agro all trolls. Again dont turn left or right as you will probably lose agro of first LARGE mob of trolls. As soon as you get all your agro, hit glads defense, dolyak, and live vicariously in that order. Then you cyclone axe and hit watch yourself, and start attacking a troll. As soon as cyclone axe charges hit it again. Then again. Just before the 3rd cyclone is ready, glads should be wearing down and you use bonetti's. DONT be without a stance for too long, you will lose health fast. At this point you will be hitting cyclone axe + watch yourself every time cyclone charges. You should hit watch yourself before cyclone hits so that after it does it will be fully charged again as well as bonnettis' defense. Use bonettie's defense. cycle through till glads is charged and go through the whole cycle again till all of them are dead. As long as you keep dolyak+watch yourself up the few non-attack skills that hit through bonettis or glads will do 0-4 dmg a hit. With mending +3 as well as healing for 13 health per hit. the trolls simply CANNOT kill you as long as you keep a stance up and cyclone when its charged. With this build the only problems I can see you having is all the damage you take before you finally get all the trolls rounded up and cyclone axe that first one for massive heal. If, while grabbing all the troll agro, you think you're taking too much damage dont be afraid to hit glads defense early to reduce the hits you take. You can still dolyak + live vicariously after you get all the trolls and it wont mess up your order of skills since its about a 5 sec cycle of cyclone+watch yourself followed by bonnettis w/ glads every 30 secs and dolak every 20 secs. Age
May I ask you why you put your absorbtion rune in your leggings instead of your boots where it suppose to go?
