Btw what are the 2 unique items in the preorder package??
dargon
The 2 slots are for both versions, but only if you merge your install with chapter 1, giving you 6 in total, no merge, you get 4 total.
You can find out about the two items from the guildwiki at

what do you mean merge...
Jenosavel
By merge, he means adding your Factions key to your current account instead of making a new account for Factions. If you merge, you get 2 new slots and all of your characters get to freely travel between Cantha and Tyria (definitely the route I'm going, personally). If you don't merge, it's like you never played Prophecies (Chapter One) so any new characters you make are stuck in Cantha and can't go back to the Prophecies areas. You get four total slots with a new account, but at the cost of not being able to travel to both continents, not being able to (easily) swap items between your two account's characters, and not being able to share unlocks between the two accounts.
BmeiX
so if u make new account you'll never be able to go to 1st continent??
Lord Osiric
if you dont add the faction key into the prophetics key you wont be able to play in the 1st continent(tyria)

Factions is a stand-along game. You don't need GW:P to play it. You can create a new account and have 4 slots. But you can also merge your GW:P and GW:F together, giving you 6 slots in total. If you decide to merge, your characters from GW:P can go to Cantha and vice versa. In the end, I'd say merge the two. That's what I'm doing.

I think I understand about adding the Factions key code to my existing account when Factions is released, but I've purchased a pre-order package at one of the local retailers and wonder if I add that Factions per-order key code to my account now, before I actually have the final full retail release version of Factions, in order to get the special items included for the folks who purchased the pre-order packs.
It will be something of a trade off, if we "merge" Factions with our existing Prophesies accounts, since we will be able to freely travel between the two lands, but you'll forfeit two character slots in order to do that, not to mention the loss of the extra storage space. I understand that account holders will be able to purchase extra character slots for your accounts, for $9.95 each, but will this apply only to separate, stand alone Factions and Prophesies accounts, or also the the "merged" accounts? I've always wondered why they only provided 4 character slots, but had 6 primary professions? I had to purchase another copy of the game and opened another account just to I could play the other primary professions without having to delete existing characters to do so. Maybe that's why they did it....dollars & cents.

The future option to buy more character slots will be possible for any account, whether merged or not. So, with a stand-alone account (regardless of which chapter) you will be adding slots to the initial four you get with the game. For merged accounts you will be adding slots for the six you get between both games.
