All skills gained with quests.
Dj Tano
Hey i would really like the skill earning system to be changed.
First off i think you should not be able to gain skills for your second class wit quests, but that you should only be able to get those by buying them. This way you would narrow the "i can be everything in a few seconds" thing down.
Second, all skills [except for elites] should be earned with quests. Of course, the better the skill, the harder the quest. This way not everyone would have the good skills since the quests would be quite hard.
Third, you should still be able to buy the skills from the skillguy. This way people could have the skills without having to do the quests if they cant be bothered but would have to pay money for them. (maybe skills should have individual prices where some skills cost 50g and some others 1k)
Now the only real problem i would encounter with this system is people saying that it would be a bit unfair to the people who do the quests if other poeple can just buy skills, but the problem is already there with people buying skills already.
I think it would be really nice, because i am a person who is not gonna bother buying a skill when i can earn it. And even if the quest is RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing hard and i have to do it over and over to get throught with it, if the skill is worth it i will do that.
PS: Maybe people are gonna say its a bit shit that you can only buy skills for your secondary class, but it would just be just too easy if you could earn those too. If you could, then people would switch secondary class after the other so they could get all the skills, but if they cant earn them and cant be bothered to pay, then people will start a new char to unlock the skills.
Plus how many people have you seen that really use theyr secondary class? 10-15% of all the players? I think those people are gonna pay the 2-3 skills they need if they really have to get them...

Good idea to have all non-elite skills available via quests. It would certainly save some gold and skill points.
I don't agree with the idea about secondary skills. When I change secondaries I go back and do all the profession specific quests to earn as many skills as possible so I don't have to buy them all.
As far as using secondary profession .... depends on the circumstance. Example: Necro MM I use all blood and death; going SS I use my secondary mesmer skills a lot.

Unfortunately, Anet appears to be going in the opposite direction. There will be fewer skills available through questing in the next chater, not more. I think they want people making their own quests up; go to a trainer, buy a sigil, kill mobs and cap the skill, etc. There's a press release around here somewhere about it.

I think the way things will be in Factions is much better than what the OP wants.
Getting gold and skill points for quest rewards, with the flexibility to unlock skills in whatever order I choose seems much nicer to me. Who likes having to wait through 60% of the storyline to finally get to the quest for the skill you need?

I like this idea as well but like Minus Sign said - Anet seems to be going in a different direction.

I...hate this idea. Or at least how it's presented.
As it is now, people are already "boxed in" in to what builds they can actually play for most of the game. For example, and ele WILL be fire for a good portion of the game, since he won't have enough skills in any other line to be of use. This system is even MORE restrictive of the player's choice to play the builds that they want.
Furthermore, you basically said that people don't use their secondaries enough, so...why not make it so people just don't use their secondaries at all by making it harder to get secondary skills. If it were easier to obtain the skills you WANTED for most of the game, then it would inspire more individual builds.
Basically: With your system, players know exaclt what skills the otehr players have at that point in the game. With the system ANET is goign with, there *should* be more diversity, since players can choose what skills they want.
PPS: I would loe all skills to be available in quests, AS WELL AS being able to be bought....but that just seems far too easy to get all the skills quickly.

Perfect idea. Those that want to save and adventure/roleplay can gain their skills through quests. Those that can't wait can go buy them!

As it stands right now you can get almost all the skills from doing guests for your primary class as well as your secondary but only the secondary you chose in presearing. Plus with the price of skills at a trainer increasing in price starting at 50g up to 1k per skill it almost encourages people to get the skills through questing rather than buying them. I agree that the remaining skills that can only be gotten at skill trainers should be awarded for completing quests but so should the secondary class skills for the secondary class you chose in presearing. Now when you get to the desert you have to quest for each secondary you want to change. After you have changed, the only skills you can get by questing for your new secondary are the class specific quests. Now if you got ran to the desert and got yourself ascended to do the change secondary quests, then you will get more skills as rewards for the new class but at a cost of not getting new skills as rewards for the class you changed from. But if you did every quest and mission for that character proceding through the game normally from ascalon to the wilds then off the the desert where you completed all the secondary quests after ascention it doesn't leave you will all that many class specific quests for the new secondaries you can become (most of which are in ascalon). This means you can't be the "everything in a few seconds" as you say since you are forced to purchase most of the skills for the new secondaries you can become. Unless you have every skill unlocked already, you won't be able to get them all from just one trainer either.
/notsigned. I believe the current system is fine the way it is.

You cant really say that people would be boxed in, because already now you can buy all skills you want if you feel boxed in, and in my system you could buy them too. I see a point in people being forced to use some skills for most part of the game, but being there more quests needed, there should be more choices of skills. Lets say you get to ascalon and want to get to be an axeman then you go to Birky Axefinger and he gives you quests for axeskills. If you are an ele and want to go earth you go to Doinky Flatearth and he will give you quests for earthskills.
There is one thing i want to add: Everything in a game like this will be "ruined" by some people. There just isnt a way around this. ANet can do everything they want, but there will still be lvl2s in ring of fire, and people with droks armor in ascalon. It just is that way. And since every system they put in will be abused by some players i dont think you can say that this system being abusable makes it not worth it. I as a fair player am going to play all the way throught till desert to do the quest to get myself the skill i needed to get my build how i want it too. And if there are some players who prefer buying money off ebay to buy the skills, well i cant change that.

The new system is going to be instead of getting skills from quests, you get gold and probably skill points. You then can buy whatever skill you want, or spend the gold elsewhere.
Brilliant.
Brilliant.

where did i contradict myself?
Hunter Sharparrow
Oh I see it now but I think it was only bad wording that's all. You said at the first that you shouldn't be able to get your secondary skills through questing then later go on to say every skill should be available to get through quests. But you were refering to every primary right? Just ignore them when they do that it just means that they couldn't think of anything to respond with.

Well surely if I can see the point he was putting across anyone else can, so there wouldn't or atleast shouldn't be a need to pick apart the post in such a way with things like "learn to spell" "Fix your grammer" and even "you just contradict yourself". So I saw his point as being clear and he did also or else he wouldn't have responded with "where did i contradict myself?" and so did a few others or else they probably would of said something like "I don't understand what your trying to say here".

Maybe research a little more? You only can purchase skills you've gotten on previous characters from skill trainers (in addition to the trainers "staple" skills). Just thought you should know.
And I doubt you can magically go to Ember Light Camp off the bat to get all the skills either ^_~
Kool Pajamas
I'd rather be able to get any skill I wanted instead of questing for certain skills. Unless they made every single skill available from quests at the beginning of the game so I didnt have to wait until half-way through just to get bone fiends or whatever. But I doubt that would/could happen.
