Why do people only do PvP or PvE?
Guardian of the Light
I'm really confused at this whole PvE vs PvP thing. I happen to do both and it confuses me that people would miss out on half the game.
So why do people do only PvP or PvE? Why don't you do both? There are benifits to doing PvE for PvP and vice-versa.
I see all these threads about how Anet favors one side and how stuff in PvE is overpowered. Like the thread about removing the green items, why don't you just go down there and get them.
So why do people only do PvP or PvE?

PvE is basically Dungeon Siege.
PvP is like playing Counter-Strike but with Diablo characters.

I assume people do those parts of the game they enjoy.

We have a winner here!
Was it really so hard to understand that?
That said, a PvP player that is new to the game is practicly forced to play PvE to unlock skills. So even if they want, they can't at first. But that's allready said a million times.

Ya it's just simply variating opinions. Some people eat oranges. Some people eat apples. Some people eat both and some eat neither. It's what being a human being is all about.
Xenrath
I really wouldn't call PvP or PvE just half the game. They are more or less complete games in their own ways...
Rajamic
But at the same time, neither is as fleshed out at it would otherwise be if it was a separate game. And with how many games have been made, there has to be a better version of PvE and a better version of PvP out there.

They don't need to do PvE at all, all they have to do is farm the Random Arenas for Faction, which takes less time then people may think.
But it is a fact that playing the PvE game is a much faster means of farming the lower level skills, same reason I have a Necro/Mem for the sole purpose of farming skills. But then again maybe I'll make a MM or a 55 Necro

Well, maybe I'm wrong, but I thought I heard WOW was moreso a PvE style a game and that is what I like, but I refused to purchase the game and got Guild Wars instead because I don't want to pay a subscription to play. I'm not against PvP, but when I've played it, the speed is too fast for my liking and I just don't want to take the time to hone my skills for something I'm not overly interested in.

A looooong ass time.
Whether you enjoy PvE or not, this game basicly forces you to play through it a few times in order to be somewhere near a competitive level.

Back OT - I choose not to PvP because it doesn't interest me. In the same way a PvP only player chooses not to PvE, although I do take JR's point above that some PvE is practically necessary to be COMPETATIVE in PvP.

Doing the same missions over and over again will get boring eventualy. And once someone got all the skills/items he needs, there isnt much else to do aside from PvP. Is what I think at least.
Pandora's box
I knew someone who played Diablo 2 only because of the gambling! He used to enter every >5 minutes old act 3 game to pickup every single item left by the power leveling party, just to sell it for gold and... gamble!

Because if you screw up in pve, most likely, only you will know about it. If you screw up in pvp, you, your team and the opposite team will know about it... uhh.. I'm sorta shy, why would I want anyone watching me screw up?
Jagflame
Honestly, if you didn't unlock skills in PvE to use in PvP I probably wouldn't play it. PvE is fun and all, but I bought this game because it stressed skill over level, and PvE doesn't seem to take a whole lot of skill.
No, it's faster to earn skills in PvE, and it's less grinding.

I've played too many games with the competative aspect. I don't look for that in a game and it generally ruins it for me. Whenever you introduce that competative nature then things always become about the win, and only the win. The builds you use, MUST be whatever the current FOTM is or it is a build designed to beat the FOTM.
When people become competative, they become total dickheads, especially when they get to hide behind a computer screen. There is no responsibility for saying the things they say and they are usually undicipherable, or if you can figure it out it is full of hate and slur. No need to voluntarily expose myself to that.
I like PvE for the game aspect, using the skills available and even the predictability of the spawns. I didn't mind doing the grind every time I created a new character because I like to learn the ins and outs of that profession and see what variety they have to offer, not just being told a build and using it.

I get to take my time exploring all areas.
I can form PUGs with guildies or random people to complete missions/quests, or to go farming.
I tried to take this same approach with PVP (I read all that I could about GW PVP; I observed matches, read about builds, then went and did the challenges).
When I state that I'm new to PVP, I get flamed.
When I state that I'm new to PVP, I get 5 minutes from EVERYONE comments like,
"No rank noob, stfu.."
"HAHAHA..."
"Go get experience, but not on my team..."
"Go watch"
Or, I get picked and immediately dropped.
I'd like to play PVP. I'd like to try and fight for favor.
But not after taking that abuse for a week.
I'll stick with PVE...thanks
Trin Storm
People enjoy one, but not the other. There are plenty of people that never play games like Counter Strike, Halo or Far Cry - they simply don't like this style.
Same with PvE - there are plenty that perfer the Halo style and dislike RPGs.
I play both, however I certainly prefer PvE - so most time is spent there. I like PvP when friends are around and we can GvG together or something. The two styles require very different strategies. I know Many PvE people who have a hard time with the transition because the skills that work well in one are not always so good for the other.
At Kern Wolf - you are probably trying in the wrong spots. I'd say for a PvE player - NEVER go to HA - you won't win favor anyway without months of practice. Try Teams - where you and 3 friends can make a group or Random - or Z. Challenge (where you can even use henchies and the opponet is comutper controlled). ZC is a great place to mess around - take your time and play with build as you can be by yourself and see how things work. Start there - and you'll remove most of the noob talk and attitude.

you can do well only 1 thing at a time. if u do both pve and pvp u won't be speciallised at anything. u'll be a mediocre pvp player and a pretty poor pve character.
and i suppose also some players got bored of pvp and got into pve and vice versa. i think it's best to stick to only 1 aspect of the game if u wanna get very good at it.

Mercyful Fate
I run a guild that is strictly PvE... we enjoy our time in FoW/SF and have a number of people that love their 2man teams in UW. I personally probably know every mission and bonus forwards and backwards... as sad as that may be.
I think the thing that keeps most of us going is curiosity. There are a number of obscure locations that we like to farm or do chest runs.
Hell, we had one guildie doing the "Tyria World Tour '55" - he went thru every area of Tyria looking for every possible place for him to 55 monk through. I think he's trying necromancer next.
I guess cause we're a social guild, there's nothing nicer than grabbing a 5man team and heading into Sorrow's Furnace or Fissure of Woe and totally clearing it and shooting the shit at the same time.
That's just us though. That and we'd rather have perfect weapons and loads of 15k or FoW armor depending on how we think the armor looks, for instance, I hate Male Necro FoW pants, but 15k necrotic looks fine... as do Tormentor's 15k... and I can't wait to see the Minion Master armor in Factions - I for some reason have blanked as to what it looked like.
Bottomline, people do what they enjoy most of... and yes, I played Dungeon Siege 1.

In my case i don't PvE much cause i've pretty much seen that part of the game, and when i do its normally only to get a PvE char to PvP perfectness. Or to get unlocks on my secondary an tertiary account.
PvE doesn't hold any challance to me the AI is to easy to beat. The fact that you can complete 95% of the game's PvE content exclusively with the henchies kind off says all doesn't it?
So i mainly PvP because i get to play against a more challaging opposition, at least i get my ass whopped in PvP every so often, wich drives me to improve (losing sucks, you know...) my abillity. Wich simply beats PvE as their is little to no challange there.
And i think that answers it, people who play mainly for "fun" will enjoy PvE more and stick to that. On the other hand people who like a challange and to compete wil not enjoy PvE (since no challange there) and stick to PvP.

I play games to relax. Personally I find PvP too intense. So I PvE and hang out with guildies. Someone makes a mistake and we all laugh about it.

I play PvE strictly due to a few different factors:
1. When I got off of work, I want to relax, and PvE is far more relaxing IMO.
2. The general attitude of a vast majority of PvP'ers is way too immature and disgusts me.
3. PvE is more entertaining to me.
I'm sure that thousands upon thousands of other people have the same opinion as I do. I am not anti-PvP, I just personally don't care for it.

And PvErs are all angels. They don't try to scam you, 'afk' in a mission, Leeeroy Jenkins the entire map, complain about healing, spam all channels with their useless wares, etc, etc.
At best - the PvE part of the game can remain interesting for 2 characters. However, the game is a grind fest for PvPers. Even if you are in a top guild taht wins 80% of your games and get 2K faction per GvG - it is still a grind to get a decent set of unlock.
Thargor
I play PvE because I cannot stand the attitudes of most (not all) PvP players. Also if you think about it PvP offers nothing, thats right, NOTHING.
What do you get from PvP?
Faction- not needed, everything is unlockable in PvE easily.
Fame and rank- worthless, oh look at me i got a emote so now I can treat everyone else like crap! I think Ill go to a town and spam "R6 lfg for mission" when are you gonna get it that rank means zero in PvE...
Now just to clear it up before it starts, I do not hate PvP, I think the concept of PvP is great and it can be loads of fun. It's just there are too many elitist morons out there for my taste.
Bottom line, both can be fun and both have their own good and bad points.
Play what you like and leave the rest to someone else.

I have NEVER, EVER gone into a PvP area without seeing some of the foulest and most hate filled talk in the "chat" or seen so much n00b and STFU and use of CAPS and !!!!!. It all stems from the competative nature of player versus player, trash talk etc.

I prefer to play with someone rather than against them. I've always liked co-op over competition. I love single-player FPSs but hate Deathmatch type gameplay.

Hmmm... tough choice.
Nevertheless, I find PvE boring in the long run. Fun for the first 2 runs through the game. Boring after that.
PvE is also easy and static.

Our guild is strictly PvE presently. It's not that we hate PvP, we are working toward getting into it. But the answer to the OP's question is so simple -- [AL] does only PvE because we enjoy it more, and we feel it's more rewarding. I've done a little PvP, but what turns me off are the illiterate fools who insultingly taunt you after winning (or losing). Plus it's annoying when some PvP'ers feel they are superior to a PvE'er when they spam their /rank emote.
Neither aspect is "better," it just comes down to what you and your friends enjoy doing.

I have played both pve and pvp, and granted I spend most of my time on the pve side of the fence. But I enjoy both aspects. I think they can both become repetitive. With pve, the mobs are always the same on each map (sometimes there is a different spawn but the same monsters.) After a few times through it is kinda like going through the motions. However even though I like pvp a lot, (although im not very good at it yet.) It has some repetition to it too. You allways fight human components, no monsters/giant plants/dragons. That can be sad. And it is always the same number of opponents. No real chance of your group becoming severely outnumbered. However since i have access to both, when i get bored with one, i can always switch to the other. I think this is the best game ever.
