You should be more concerned with playing the game through. It's a lot more fun than farming.
Damastes
Indeed - I rarely do any serious farming. Just do loads of quests and keep levelling new characters. It does help that I don't want any Obsidian armour though I suppose.

The cheapest farming build in the game right now:
Bring 3 henchmen with you to Joko's Domain or Sulfurous Wastes (after you've done the mission), and plow through everything with the wurms. :P

I believe that VwK Ri/Me would be the cheapest, as it requires no gear whatsoever, and can make decent ammount of money.
Unfortunately, it's Factions based, so it wouldn't help you if you don't have both Factions and NF.
Other than that, playing through the game once, especially if you try to do masters on as many missions as possible nets you a nice chunk of cash. Then you can also start thinking about going to farmable areas.
Lastly, farming for money is considered the slowest way, going after various high-selling items, various chest running spots, greens and rare items and materials or simply selling DoA loot (right now at least) is what will make it worthwile. For all of this you'll need access to entire game.
