Farming for perfect mods
Kidney Licker
Recently I decided to try and find an enchanting grip for a Fiery Flame Spitter, but decided the market price was too high for me for a non-essential farming mod. After getting a perfect vampiric hilt from a Krytan chest many months ago, I decided to take keys with me during my DNKP titan farming runs, and start opening chests.
The buying key for mods habit sort of stuck and while exploring Majesty's Rest I found a +30hp axe grip from a Krytan chest. Now I'm thinking of sporadically doing Ascalon or other chest runs for perfect mods. Seeing as how chests drop only purples or golds I figure my chances are better than with normal farming.
Anyone had perfect mods from Ascalon chests? Is there a better way of finding perfect mods?

i cant answer your question, but the idea of farming low lvl area chest for mods is great=D
lennymon
yeah really, great idea! one of those "why the heck didnt I..." now im wishing I hadnt sold all those ascalon keys I got WHILE farming lodestones to go GET FFS Because, I cant think of a single reason why they couldnt drop perfect mods there...

lol ^^^^ sorry may seem a silly question DNKP ?? i cant see perfect mods dropping there either probs that +30 was a one off.
Aera
Has anyone even gotten any gold drop in Ascalon? I can remember only getting purple ones...

ive thought about this, but i think the lower the lecel cheast the lower the level item, which means lower mods

I might buy 20-30 keys of each type and try it out tonight. The hardest bit will be finding areas with a regular frequency of chests, so it doesn't get too boring.

I have got a Gold Axe once off 'The Wilds' mission.
The thing had a very nice +30 health mod on it.
The thing salvaged for an equally pretty 10 iron ingots.
Safe to say i was a a bit f*cking pissed off as that was the 2nd +30 axe mod to go that way in a week!

how can you possibly find perfect mods on low level weapons? i thought the lower the level the worse the mods....at least thats how my drops always are, for example: max gold weapons that i identify usually end up having a dmg mod of 14% in something and rarely 15%.......ive never seen a single good mod on a purple weapon or a lower level one

mods(in this thread) = salvagable mods(not +xx% dmg)
You can have +30hp on a not maxdmg golden weapon found in lower level areas. The aim of this thread to search for gold chests in lower level areas(keys cheaper, easier access). Of course the weapon drop will be not max dmg(impossible to sell), but if you get a +30hp sword pommel(worth around 130k nowadays) on it...

actually, its not the amount of damage that is done that changes the colour of the weapon, its the % modifier on it (and the extra mods)

IMO don't bother buying keys for chests before the desert or so. Perfect mods rarely show even there. I've never seen a perfect anything pop out of an Ascalon chest...but I'm open to being proven wrong.

I farm for weapons, and the mods to salvage. I go outside war camp with some henchies and run setup. Take a stroll around the paths to the east using ALT to look for those 3-4 chests that are at least purple. Henchies can back you up if it gets hairy. I find 1-2 boss mobs on the way and always kill them in the rare chance they might actually drop their weapon someday...still waiting on any of those. I'm not saying don't go down the hill to fight, I do that sometimes too to try my luck on all the boss mobs in the area down in bottom of the hill. I get a prety decent amount of usable/sellable mods or complete gold max weapons on most runs.

This is gonna take a bit longer than I thought. Ascalon chests are pretty hard to find and a bit tedious to get to. There was only about 1 chest in each area that I looked at and each was purple.
The only good thing is a small advancement to the Tyrian Explorer title. I'm also kinda dizzy after running around the bends and turns of the bleak Ascalon landscape. Gotta lie down now......

From my experience, having 4 PvE characters, I've never had an ascalon chest drop a gold anything. Prove me wrong if you can, but i doubt it.
Former Ruling
ditto. ascalon chests = never have dropped gold for me.

Hmm, well I farm the ice imps outside of Ice cave, and the chest there (shiverpeak chest), drop purple 90% of the time, so I guess it doesnt really mather at all.
Oh and by the way, the mod determines the colour, not the dmg mod.

Got a +30 hp staff head dropped in the wilds/bloodstone fen (forget which)

For everyone asking how a low level chest drops a good mod I think it's important to remember that the OP said he was doing DNKP when it dropped. Titan quests all have high level enemies and chests are accordingly upgraded.

I think colours are decided on mods mainly. For example a white/blue non-max dmg weapon can be increased to purple by adding mods. I've done it before, but the dmg is probably classed as a mod in itself when deciding on a colour, after all, you get white clean fiery dragons swords and blue max dmg clean FDS. So its quite possible to get a perfect mod off a blue item if it isn't max dmg.

When I farm ettins, if a key drops ill use it or if gold item drops every now and then I found that when a gold item is found, the damage may be crap, 10-14, req 4 on a sword or whatever, but the mods can still be great, even better than 'normal'... 10/9 sundering or whatever.. but its jsut much harder to find a gold over a purple.
Anywho, I was running a guildie around last ngiht and decided to test this out while in ascalon and the northern shiverpeaks with every chest i came across, but for all the ascalon and steel chests, no gold came out...

Anyway, managed to open 30 Ascalon chests. All purple, and interestingly no mods on any items, not even a lousy elemental mod. Attached is everything that came out of the chests.
Looks like Ascalon chests are a total waste of time.
Now onto Steel chests
BaconSoda
Gold items only drop out of the kryta+ chests. Seel chests and ascalon ones don't get golds. The best thing i have ever even seen out of a steel chest is a 12-24dmg (req 8 marks) longbow that was blue.
Ramses
the only perfect mod ive ever found in a chest was outside of ember light camp...i guess im just unlucky lol
lennymon
ok, after many chests over the weekend (was farming elementals out of serenity whenever I had 5 minutes to kill, if you know what I mean). All 13 keys were monster dropped so no cash outlay....I just used the chests in great northern wall and enroute to the fiery flame spitter collector. only one single chest gave me a salvageable mod -- +10% bowgrip of deathbane :/
I'll feel comfortable with the assumption that even IF all mods are possible on lower level items, the %age chance for them to drop with said mod goes down. Definitely more expedient to FoW farm or something IMHO as there seems to be very good drop rates on mods there - and some other pretties too.

Only tried about 10 Steel chests, all purple, but purple with mods at least. It was a bit tedious finding Steel chests sometimes. The only use I can see for Steel chests is if some elemental mods become hard to find.
Looks like I'll have to stick to Krytan or Maguum chests.

Every chest before the desert has dropped purple for me.

um please dont be offended that everyone ignores you (if you are lucky) for asking off topic (and easily searchable) questions in an existing thread Necro Demon.
I have never noticed color of chest drops earlier than desert, i think primarily since I never use them except if a key happens to drop AND I see a chest before getting to the next town and sell the key It's good confirmation for me that I didn't waste my time all those months heh.
I actually started mino farming recently and get the occaisional key drop but had been selling them. I'll begin to save and use the keys and log my chest drops for them as well as other areas (FOW) at least like % chance of getting a chest drop worth more than key...heh. If we get enough folks to contribute similarly into one thread for various areas I'd bet well see differences pretty quickly. Might be useful.

I dont think you can get a perfect mod off a blue, i think the way it is is for a blue, the mods can go up to a certain level, then for purple they are in a higher range, then for gold they can be anything. Same applies for damage mods, blue can go up to a certin amount, purple a little higher, and gold up to perfect. Also not possible to change the base color, all mods are blue when you salvage them, they dont retain the color of the base weapon, so for example, salvage +30 off a gold weapon, the mod is blue, add +30 to a blue sword, the sword would still be blue, it doesnt bump up to gold or purple or whatever..
