Early Critical mistake
AquaticRay
New here, first post. I ordered the game (Gets here monday) and have read as much as my mind could contain so far. When first starting the game - what do you think is a critical error to avoid?

Not taking your time to enjoy the game, everything else you manage to screw up can always be fixed easily

DO NOT use or sell any dye you find. Keep it all until..... well, you will know when.
It is actually pretty hard to ruin anything early on in the game. When you level up, you get to distribute your attribute points. As long as you gain experience throughout the game, you can always change the distribution of those points. Therefore you can always change your specialty.

Selling black and purple dye for the luxurious price of 2 gold (what a steal)!

well...best piece of advise I can give you is to accept the secondary profession missions...then go and fight some mobs and test out the secondary skills. No this won't give you a good idea of what the profession is capable of doing...but it will give you a good idea of what style of fighting you can assume this profession is capable of. The biggest mistake you can make in the game is picking the wrong secondary...as you won't be able to change it for a LONG time. As long as you don't do the quest you can still change your secondary by accepting a different secondary profession quest.
also...don't buy anything in pre-sear...nothing is worth it and you need to save whatever gold you can get for the armor in post. And don't use or sell your dye...the armor you will be dyeing will only be with you for a SHORT SHORT time and unfortunately the players that can't seem to make any cash post sear go back to pre to feed off the noobs ignorance.

Before 'Tydus Launch'
I'd do all the skill quests for the primary and secondary class you choose
I'd do the quest which offers a skill point
Not critical if you don't, just saves a little further grind later if you do
(later on instead of levelling, every 'level' is a skill point, and you need them)
Also get a belt pouch early - very easy to do, and more slots to make $
You want $ for once you take the plunge you'll see some nice armor upgrades

That said usually any primary can mix with something, so thus Algren's thought. But if you want to play with all the weapons you find, most caster won't ever work too well with them. Conversely you'll never be a good caster with a Warrior primary, and arguable, a Ranger primary either.
4 slots helps, but I'm still really disappointed in the number.. 30 combinations, RPG and PvP choices.. 4 slots between them?
But anyways I digress, there's so much to do, as it is I play way too much

Don't buy every skill you see...because you'll regret it when you start seeing those skills as quest rewards (I did this a couple times...)
CKaz
or even better ArenaNet adds the quest later, and even if you do that quest you wont get the skill point back (boo!)

Thank you for all the replies. I appreciated it.

I have to disagree with everyone, worst mistake in the game is to get scammed out of your GW account, yes it DOES happen.... Ways to prevent this from happening...
1) Dont Give your password to ANYBODY
2) Dont download ANY programs AT ALL, that says sumthing to good be to true... because its a key logger that records when u type in your password!

Doesnt take someone being very dumb, just very naieve and unaware of the dangers that are out there.

My advice, if you still haven't talked to Sir Tydus and left... do every single quest you can find. Get to every outpost and do every quest. It makes the game more interesting, it gives you a deeper background into the plot, and it lets you get to around level 6 before you go and talk to Sir Tydus and leave.
Thanato
there are no "wrong" primary/secondary profession combos, just some work better then others
Enigmatics
I think having no secondary is worse then having an unorthodox one. Some people get the idea you're tainted if you have a more original build. I'm actually one of them, but just do what you want; the first time through any RPG is more about enjoyment than perfection.

Try to collect as much gold as possible in pre sear to help get better armor after the searing.
When dealing with traders, dont buy or sell anything until you are sure you know what that item is truly worth.

Fye Duron
Take your time and enjoy it. Make sure that you take the time to explore the whole pre searing area. You shouldn't leave till your at least level 7, and that really isn't hard to do.
Blow_Holez
Save all the crafting materials you can! Don't sell dyes for a while, and do not be tempted to buy all the armor as you progress through the missions. For me, i used the armor I got in Ascalon from the crafters until I bought the armor in Draknors Forge.

I recall in Diablo2 in the main chat someone talking about how neat it was that BNet changed it where if you type your password in it showed up as all asterisks. He even typed in ****** as "proof".
Being unable to resist (and apparently smarter than the guy)... I typed "Eggplant" and said "hey, it didn't work!"
Needless to say, that wasn't my password, and the next day revealed half a dozen failed login attempts... heh heh

these are not tips for playing the game....these are tips for not being a moron....anyone that would give out their password deserves to have their account stolen...as they are ignorant to the world and need a kick in the teeth
Ol Dirty Scott
dont over analyze what is on these forums so much that you cannot learn from your own mistakes. thats what i love about this game!

Once again I thank everyone for heir inputs.
