You can try 7zip http://www.7-zip.org (freeware) to open up a rar file.

Honestly I use Power Archiver 2006 at home and I think it's the best (I purchased it and get free upgrades for life when I bought it - not sure if that's still true if you buy it now). http://www.powerarchiver.com/
But at work, I use 7zip because it's opensource (does not conflict software licensing at work) and it's free and gets the job done.
I thought Winrar was shareware?

Winzip has fallen from it's lofty postion. it's generally more expensive and doesn't support nearly as many formats as there competion (any of them). That and the new Zip encryption vartion different from the other pkzip encryption (and not being compatibility with each other) really helped things. And both these competing standards still use .zip as the extension ><
To be honest I see 7zip (compression) taking hold nicely since it's open source and having better compression ratio's overall then the other formats.

Files compressed with 7-Zip (in .7z) seem to take up less space than if they were to be compressed in WinRAR (in .rar). Then again, 7-Zip is more resource-intensive here (system grinds to a halt).
I have both installed and adjust accordingly. If I need to compress something to send through email, I'll generally choose .rar or .zip (since the recipient of the mail usually will have no clue what ".7z" is.)
