Yeah...see...like...that's the thing. It looks like the PvP-PvE linkage in Factions is going to be a lot more RELEVANT. That's the key word.
In Prophesies the favor system is a "you're the best, or you're wasting your time" kind of control over UW/FoW. You need to be a PvP God to have any kind of real control over the favor. A new-to-PvP player has virtually a 0% chance of seeing HoH let along winning or holding it. I'm not r3 yet (though I am busting my ass to get it slowly but surely) and I've only been to HoH twice and I've never won it, and I'm far off from holding it. Maybe once I get my IWAY badge, I mean...r3...then maybe I can find some group of people who will put together holding builds that we can play. I'm not overly hopeful though...I'm not well connected and anyone who knows me knows I'm attached to my not-very-PvP guild.
So when people ask to have favor control over these places removed, what is the standard response? Paraphrasing: "Well, that's how ANet designed it", "We shouldn't unlink the two any further", "Favor makes the game dynamic".
Uhuh, yeah, right. Ok, well, if your definition of "design" or "dynamic" means a weak, almost completely arbitrary linkage contrived of a weak plot device...then well, I guess you're right! I can't argue that operating definition!
People want the two unlinked because the existing linkage is piss poor. I'm trying to become a better PvP player so that I might have some control of my own (and for the record, I have two accounts - one in America, and one in Europe) but the progress is slow...as...hell. And in the end, the one thing I've learned from the HA experience I've already had is that the sheer thrill of the kill, and the highs of victory are rewards about a million times better than UW/FoW access.
I'm not fundamentally opposed to having access to FoW/UW access controlled by PvP experience, but the level of experience required to make a difference is an absurd expectation! The favor system is nothing more than a pointless correlation whereby the elite cream of the crop in the PvP community dictates the play style of PvE players who couldn't care less about them all over the world. That's the problem. The game ISN'T dynamic. FACTIONS is dynamic! In Factions, the PvP element required puts a lot more control in the hands of PvE players and PvP players alike. As a whole people can push the borders of the world, the elite can control towns, and single players can play in large groups for faction needed to get materials for the PvE armors. That, my friends, is a TRULY dynamic game.
And...I pretty well can't explain it any better than that. Favor is...and always has been completely and utterly broken.
