Yet another Thread about accumulating wealth
Shiva SsBip
I saw a price check on a shield for 7.5 mil and it astounded me. I have been playing the game for just over two months now and have 3 fully equipped (armed and armored) chars, about 400k in the bank, and a handfull of extra green/gold gear in storage. I play about 30-35 hrs a week including missions, quests, farming and spending time helping low-levels chars with quests.
My question is how does one accumulate so much wealth to be able to drop 7 mil on a piece of gear?
Do you farm incessantly? Buy it on ebay? It astounds me. Altogether I have probably earned just shy of a single mil but have spent most of that outfitting my chars. My GW-holic guild leader with 8 chars (and who spends alot of his personal bank-roll buying gear for guildees) just liquidated his ectos-shards-gems-black dye collection and only came out with 1.7 mil.
I am amazed at comments I see where some rich players only play PvP now. How did they get soo rich?
Thank-you for your atttempts to bring clarity to me. I am Stumped.

I just don't understand how anything is worth that much. Top level items aren't that difficult to obtain, espically since the SF Greens were introduced.
fenix
Top level items ARE difficult to obtain. Greens are no substitute, as they cannot be modded, and the high end shields are very rare. A good drop from HoH chest can net you over 5 million, so thats one way.

I'm more floored by the 30-35 hours a week of playing.
With more than 40 hours per week of working full time, a fun/happy/enjoyable life with my wife, giving myself time to read... I'm lucky if I can get in 2 hours a day and even then, it's really late at night and just before I go to bed. I pretty much save this game or any gaming for when I have the time to do it.
It's amazing to me how many hours folks put into games. How do you folks do it?

Not spending I guess, I am constantly buying new armour pieces and skills to try new stuff, I gave that a rest for a couple of weeks and found I had 120k~ For a year if you did farming a lot I guess you could get 7 times that, I think the more likely answer is ebay though

ummm...HoH?
As for the time, I work 45-50 hours a week, time with spouse (quite rare), time with kids, time with friends (getting quite rare), commutting (sp?) to work -- 2 hours daily; GW has taken over my reading time and has cut sharply into sleeping time. I play about 2 hours daily- 1 in the morning as kids get ready for skewl and 1 (or so...) before bed if wife has already crashed. On my days of I play about 5-10 hours (how sad) unless projects or trips get in the way. LOL . I'll prob cut back when the game isnt as exciting as new, but I am starting char #4 (a monk) and still have lots to learn. What is HoH btw?
Oh...Hall of Heroes...duh. thanks

I'm jealous! I need more than 24 hours in a day.

its possible to become very rich off a few very good drops, the nerfed items go for insane amounts of money and long time players of the game who had them before the nerf hit the jackpot when they got nerfed.
building perfect weapons is one way but it is tedious sometimes and you have to have a pretty decent bankrole to get the perfect mods.
and then there is the sad sad option, e-gay...oh..did i say that...i meant e-gay..oh i did i say that again...
now im in no way rich the most ive had in the bank was about 150k(before i started my necro) but you just have to keep at it, watch your drops an item may look like junk but look at the mods and see what youu can salvage off it some mods go for a pretty penny. be careful how you spend your money, when i first started playing i got scammed a few times because i didnt know any better. if your looking to buy something buy it here, the quality of people selling here is much much better than most people selling in game.

HoH = Hall of Heroes, a PvP area. If you win a chest spawns, and there are drops for some of the winning teams players. Any item in the game can drop from it, mostly Celestial Sigils (for guild halls), but there have been Dwarven Axes, Crystalline Sword etc.

Simple answer is Ebay - with over 200 adds for GW gold available through Ebay, and that is only one of many sources. I find it quite pathetic and demoralising to find that so much of the MMORPG community is this type of player, the ones who pay real money for game resources, who would rather not play through a game learning as they go, the type who prefer to cheat thier way to a hollow victory rather than struggle thier way to a real victory.
Damn shame GW is full of this type of player and not those who just "play" games.

For 7.5mill, ebay is the only way to go.

Actually, the rich players in the game have never ebayed, just no one can understand that. There are hundreds of ways to get rich without ebay.
Shiva SsBip
Hundreds? Pray tell please.

buy the ringmail gauntlets autographed by me, that are currently selling in high end...
out of curiosity, what shield was PCed at 7.5 million; and where did you see the PC exactly? (an item worth 7.5 mil means its expensive enough to get my attention )
the real answer to wealth is in the form of a complex mathematical equation located below;
wealth=skill in tradingX(time(patience X starting money)^common sense)-stupidity^y
where y=the number of idiotic moments that lose you money.
enjoy.

hMM Ectos and shards and any gold rq8 with 15% above 50 and furious/sundering mods....guess if ya wanna count my liquid....400k plus gold weapons haven't cashed in on 2.5mill exp and 6 months old...normally a month learning curve for item values. maybe 4hrs a day
EGayers are pathetic Why would you spend Real life money for In-Game gold...knowing that your supporting abuse of child labor laws just sick

and I cant be botherd sitting there spamming the trade for hours, everyone who looks at my items never buys.
Farming.. well, apparently all the best farming spots are known, but I dont know where they are or what builds to use.. its boring anyway..
the only thing I do is keep hold of my materials and convert them into parchment or rolls of velum.. but again im not farming for them really.
I dont really spend much gold either!... if I had 400k I would probably purchase lots of stuff for FoW armor.
hmm, guess im just lazy really, theres nothing that I ABSOLOTLY MUST HAVE.
Except for maybe decent armour and dyes.

That's how you earn 7 million.
Keep in mind, you're already in the top tier of rich players. I've been playing since July, but only have 300 hours logged. I have about 40k saved up, and I don't buy anything. I use collectors armor, and only items/runes I find.
So, I really don't feel sorry for you

Hmmm.. I am beginning to wonder about myself.
I have 3 full ascended, fully drok's armored chars, about 300k in the storage and about 150k in inventory of dyes and green items. I play at least 1 or 2 hours a day during the weekday evenings and maybe spend 10-12 hours during one day of the weekend playing. And it doesn't help that my significant other is a GW gamer as well. And he is a whole other story.
I work a regular 40 hour job, do the regular duties of house sometimes (cleaning, cooking), and occasionally entertain friends (not ver social as it is). I am also constantly under training due to my job so I still have to read a great deal and study but I still find time at least to play GW at least once an hour.
Though the other half and I have had discussion about how much is too much GW and what it has affect in our lives.
As for getting rich, I don't consider myself rich know that there are players out there who are in the million dollar club. Where they eBay or farm, they really must have no life to invest THAT much. I don't think I will ever get to have millions of gold piece in the game. I'm the type of player that gets enough for what ever I need. I farm only when low on the gp and know I want to get something soon. In this case, the 300k+ is towards skills and new armor for all my chars for the upcoming Factions.

Yes, people need to stop assuming the richest people in the game got that way because of EBAY. EBAY is not the only way to get rich. It may be the fastest way, but certainly not the one and only.
There are a number of items in the game that will sell for 1 million+ (especially back when the market was stronger for these items). If you're lucky enough to get a really rare drop, it's basically like winning the lottery.

It boggles my mind that PvP players can drop that much $$ on high-end gear.
Also, the thread I saw was in the Price Check forum for an Eternal Shield, not an auction. The prices ranged from 1.5 mil to 7.5 mil or so. Mind boggling...

its just that most people naturally progress to pvp after they have gotten their share of pve...many traders have done this, and most were rich before they got into pvp.

Well, theres a lot of rich players like Akhilleus that have their cash from things like the trader reset, buying low selling uber high, HoH chest, Dreadnaughts chest before it was nerfed, Solo UW when ecto was 18k and ecto dropped like sweets or from using the cash they have and investing in items that may go up greatly in value then cashing in when they do.
But theres also a lot of ebay nubs that spend their pocket money on gold so they can buy fissure armour and bid on those 7mil items.

One thing I noticed is that there is no need for perfect mods.
For example back in the day when superior Vigor was almost 100k and Major was 5k.
There is no need to spend 90k more on a rune that only give +9 health.
Same goes with mods, Sowrd pommel of health +29 is 10k while a +30 is 70k
Do you really think the +1 will make a difference.
People with 15>50 weapons, 90% do not customize them since they want to sell the weapon after. My Fellbalde is 12>50 and customized (and I got it for 90k back in June of last year), I'm doing more damage than a 15>50 (The Fellbalde was 780k and more back in June)

there are many ways to earn money...
#1. longevity. is it possible to amass a large forture over the time since the games release, of course, especially if they are good at or enjoy farming. this is the lowest percentage of legit wealth due to the time required
#2. dumb luck. getting that perfect drop that makes you a ton of plat
#3. an unfair advantage of time. what do i mean, simple. those that have had the game the longest, but havnet made money farming have had the advantage of the chance to gain what are now very high dollar itmes (HoD sword, pre-nerfed rockmolder, etc...) for virtually nothing, and sell them to us schmucks that never had the chance to get them any other way. i saw a guy selling 5 of them in the sell forums... 5! thats about half mil and a couple hundred Ecto .. and what did it cost him ? a couple hundred gold ? this is the one that irks me the most.
#4. Ebay. nuff said
#5. Bots. again, nuff said
so there are many people in this game that likely have large fortunes .. many are legit, though i think most would agree that the larger percentage, by far, falls into the category of not so legit. face truth people, if there wasnt a big market for it,. and people werent buying it in large quantities, we wouldnt see page after page of gold sellers and adds around these sites, but we do. we wouldnt see row after row of bots leaving Droknar's Forge, but we do
most of the fissure armor sets are bought, not earned. id like to see a comparison of those that have a million, or have fissure armor, and see how many hours they put into the game.. then we would see some truth
again, im not condemning all, but unfortunaely the large percentage of those that have, hurt the reputation and earned respect of those that didnt. sad, but true
to those that are legit, props and congrats.. to the rest .. well, im sure we need some decorum here, so ill stop there

I got rich by being quick off the mark farming and selling icy dragon swords. Before that, I never had more than 50 platinum. I taught myself to solo ice imps just outside Marhan's Grotto, popping in and out to adjust my build. It took me an hour or so to get the art down, and a few more hours of play later I had over half a million gold stashed. I didn't even sell that many, I sold them at the right time. (I even moved to the USA servers briefly at that time to unload my little IDSies faster and at better prices. )
Since then my wealth has been rising steadily. I never spend much anymore because all my characters are pretty much fully equiped for practically every circumstance.

The best and easiest way to accumulate wealth in this game is to be "lucky" in finding a good trade. Thats how i got my wealth early in the game. and continued to find and deal in good trades ever since. I have gotten a lucky drop or two, but the majority of my money came from finding an awesome deal that i knew i could profit off of. ill give an example. There was a guy trading and Henge of Denravi sword for victos bulwark shortly after they were released. i traded him mine for his sword and then re-sold the sword. made profit, then went to the pve tombs and did b/p runs until i got another shield. its monitoring trades and happening to find a lucky trade or two and youre set.
Just because someone has money, will not always mean that they ebay. sadly yes people do ebay, people do buy gold and ingame items, which if that is how they want to play it then so be it. theres nothing you nor i can do to stop someone from grabbing their credit card to try to get an advantage.

If I didn't supply every guildie with items from inventory and gold for materials when they want it I would likely be rather rich too. Its all in how you play I guess. If you want to help people out in your guild like I do the chances are your not too rich ATM.
But does it really matter? has not having 1 million gold made your game play any less fun? I would hope not? In many cases these people with THAT kind of wealth in the Mill range, are prob gold profiteers... that are breaking the RoC in some way or another... Either buy trading gold to the reseller laundering accounts, or by selling or Buying gold on EBay privately.
Generally speaking if you have farmed non stop from a year ago launch and fully equipped all 4 characters with PvE armors, and equipment that is all rare... you prob have in the neighborhood of around 400 to 500K left...
If your like me and just play causally and not hoarding much then you prob have at most around 80k... So if you have not done fissure armor on everything and farmed non stop for a year You could potentially have a mill or two in storage I guess... But why? IDK that's up to them I guess... What ever blows your skirt up, I always say... If that's what you like...
I only play very occasionally. That's why I like GW so much. its a casual mans MMO. Not anywhere near as much grind as others I have played. and if you leave it for a few weeks for, god forbid, some Real world Activities, like saving your Career. You will not be unduly penalized for it in GW by leaving for a while.
My advice. Don't fret so much over having X amt of gold. just play. most items that cost so much are not worth it anyways. in all honesty there is nothing in the game worth more then 100k. except people will insist this is not true... But it is. that's the limit of trade transfers and personal inventory capacity for a reason. Almost every so called elite item in the game has a free or nearly free equivalent to use. it may not be the same SKIN, but its the same quality... GW is about playing and accumulating new SKILL, not the goodies from farming. otherwise there would be no such thing as collector items... Thank Dwayna there are however. Thus GW is still holding to their mantra that Skill > Grind. and we have ArenaNet to thank for that, because if NCSoft had their way we would be paying out the nose for everything not only chapters but monthly subscriptions, and paying for in game items as well. ANet has been to bat for us so many times, and either no one knows, or if they do never seem to appreciate it...
You know come to think of it... one thing I would like to see is that if your character is carrying around 100K on their body shouldn't they slow down a bit? I mean 100 platinum pieces would be pretty darn heavy. LOL
