why are zones barred off with doors so you cant go through them!!!!!!

I'm hoping it's a first-character-only unlock thing. I enjoy doing all the missions to explore and all, but to do it all 4 more times might not be so enjoyable.

I remember going into a zone somewhere (forget where exactly) and when I did, the previous zone was barred off and there was a guard saying I wasn't allowed to go there -- pretty funny I thought, considering I had just been there!
