Well I've been playing around in Cantha for a while now and just did the first(?) Mission there, the one with the minister that turns into some zombie-like creature lol...

When I finished it (immediately the first time if that makes a difference in the rewards) I got a couple of things on the screen:
Mission Completion Time: 18:33

You have earned:
2,000 xp, 200 gold, and 1 skill point (Master's Reward)
1,500 xp, 100 gold, and 1 skill point (Expert's Reward)
1,000 xp, 50 gold, and 1 skill point (Standard Reward)

What's this exactly all about??

Please enlighten me

The missions are now all based on your performance. Beat all the missions fast enough or with no turtles dying (Luxon) and you get Protector of Cantha. ;3

I would guess it ranks your performance and then gives you the appropriate rewards for how well you did. Seems like completion time is one criteria, maybe number of deaths is another. When I did it I finished in 17:31, I think it was, only one of my teammates died once, and I got all three rewards. I'll have to ask the person who died and see if they got all three as well.

I think I'm going to like this system a lot more than the bonus objectives in Prophecies. It looks like it directly rewards skill in that the better you do, the more rewards you get. Plus, the gold rewards are nice; they payed for most of my next set of armor in the outpost after the mission. ^_^
