My friend and I were discussing Ranger and Mesmer roles in PvP and how one would defeat the other. Rangers are easily defeated with skills like Ineptitude and Clumsiness, but when he specifically set out to annihilate anti-warrior mesmers using Ineptitude, he was very effective. Granted his build doesn't hold much weight in a team arena or guild battle, but I would like to know how to defeat him.
His build consists of many counterskills to mine. He has:
Melandru's Resilience (to counter all my hexes [I was using a Domination/Illusion build])
Troll Unguent (as a self-heal)
Savage Shot
Penetrating Attack
among other skills.
Skills like Diversion and Wastrel's Worry didn't really do much, and I was looking for tips to defeat this build.
I was thinking along the lines of Domination/Inspiration, perhaps energy denial + mind wrack, but they haven't proven to be useful. What I can't believe is that the mesmer, arguably the ultimate pvp character, loses out to a ranger when they both set out specifically to destroy one another one-on-one. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Pure Mesmer vs pure Ranger? Some ideas:
Distortion
Mantra of Resolve
Signet of Humility
Clumsiness + Ineptitude
Stacking Degens
Empathy
Spirit Shackles + Mind Wrack
Spirit Shackles + Wastrel's Worry
Mantra of Recovery + Diversion
Cry of Frustration/Leech Signet

Ah^^ Melandru's resilience?
Illusion/Inspiration build
Take a high energy mesmer into battle and cast mantra of recall; keep up with distortion.
The best effective counter for resilience is Conjure Nightmare (see, it's not useless at all) when he sees that his elite isnt working, he'll try to use troll unugent to heal himself. Use an interrupt on him and time it so that you do it half way he's activating the unugent (leech sig). By this time, his resilience should have ended (nightmare would have ended before hand.). Now you can recast nightmare, if he uses unugent again, cast illusion of pain, and wand him until he dies.
I've tried this build myself, against a melandru's... pwned him^^

EDIT: /laugh Sorry I missed the Melandru's Resiliance part in the OP! I agree with Terra_Xin above! Also you may wish to consider Signet of Humility. Disregard below!
I just had the same discussion with a friend, and we scrimmaged. Mesmer 3, Ranger 0. Dropped
him in seconds flat.
My build was:
Me/Mo
Inspiration 11 (10 + minor rune)
Illusion 15 (11 + hat + superior rune)
Fast Casting 11 (10 + minor rune)
Vokur's Staff and Enchanter's Armor (major vigor)
Skills:
Distortion (defense ftw)
Spirit of Failure (this combined with distortion = massive energy gain, slow casting time though)
Ineptitude {E} (primary damage dealer. blindess with spirit of failure = massive energy gain)
Clumsiness (secondary damage dealer, more spammable than ineptitude)
Conjure Phantasm (debated on Conjure Nightmare but I went with Phantasm for lower energy cost, to draw out Distracting/Concussive Shot if necessary, also was a good counter to him not attacking and waiting out Clumsiness and Ineptitude, also helps counter troll unguent)
Leech Signet (free interrupt for reserved for troll unguent or some other spirit or preperation)
Purge Conditions (just in case I got poisoned, dazed, crippled, etc. not linked to an attribute and it was low energy cost )
Ether Feast (probably a better option, but low energy cost, drained precious ranger energy, and gave me health in emergencies)
