Just wondering if there is another way to identify items other than the 100gold 25 use item at the vendor.

nope. Only way to ID items that are unidentified is to buy a ID kit and use it on the item.

You've got to use an identification kit (or the superior one if you want). You can also try to guess what it does by equipping it, for example a health mod.
