Assassin Secondaries - consensus
AaronSwitchblade
After spending the evening starting the game with my new Assassin char, Its come to the time to choose my final profession combination.
I was wondering, is there any consensus about the better choices to make? I know from Prophecies that there being a "best" is probably out of the question.
I'm going to pick Assassin/Ranger, or perhaps Necro. However, apart from perhaps elementalist (which I've looked at, but can't really work out any good builds that compare to the other combinations), any of the others would likely produce a good char to work with.

I went with Monk as my secondary, so I could add Smiting as an option. This kinda went along the same vein as choosing Elementalist as a secondary for the Conjure line of skills. Looking back I think I would have rather chosen Ranger as my secondary. Not only is it fitting that an Assassin would have access to bows, but there are also a lot of other skills that would compliment (Serpent's Quickness, traps, poison skills, etc.) That's my two cents at the moment. Maybe Smiting will come in handy later on down the road, or maybe even mending for survivability.

Many people have settled on Warrior, the Warrior speed skills, attack speed skills, and many seemingly assassinlike (Wild Blow) warrior skills go very well with your assassin.

I went with warrior for heal sig, bonettis and a few other defense skills, as i find my self having to charge in tank style when i am with henchies.
But once you get to senjins corner (spelling) you can change to any secondary you like, and it is only a couple of missions in when you get to kaineng so it is no big disaster if you dont like the one you chose.

Kotoso
ranger for shadow of haste and luring warriors into traps
Stormlord Alex
I'm happily an A/Mo... I'm a PvE kinda 'sin, and I travel with henchies for the most part, so a 'hard' res is sexy. I know Rit has Flesh of My Flesh, but for PvE, Rebirth is far superior. Besides, a little healing alongside Shadow Refuge was kinda helpful early on, while the Healer Hench sucked.

I've had another look at Ranger, which I originally picked for my secondary, and have decided that apart from the now famous "one woman bloodstorm" build, it really isn't a good secondary to pick.
Caelus The Fallen
Ive been enjoying A/W spamming "Watch Yourself!" like crazy. +20 armour really helps, and even at a very minimal investment in Tactics the 6s duration is easy to maintain.

I'm A/Me because I had some ideas for mesmer skills that could compliment an assassin. I'll have to get those skills to see if it's worth it, currently I haven't really found a use for any of the mesmer skills I have, but I'm still on the first island area.
For now I recommend A/R, ranger skills seem to compliment it quite well. You can have a pet to soak up damage for you, you can use apply poison, set traps, and I'm sure there are other good reasons. But note, I haven't played as an A/R so I could be wrong about that

I have to agree. The ranger secondary works well with the Assassin primary. Apply poison plus a lead, offhand and dual attack can ruin your enemy's day quick.

My assassin as a mesmer secondary because of the energy tapping skills and the interupt skills that the mesmer offers. I find it every annoying that most assassins skills have a 10 energy cost and the max energy my char has is 35 with the armor combo she has (Valkery/Nightstalker). So in the middle of a fight, I have 0-10 energy left leaving me virtually tapped out. But having mesmers skills of Energy Drain or Energy Tap is really helpful in those situations in getting an addition 10-15 energy, especially if the energy tapping has an interupt in it.

Anyone tried A/E for elemental weapons?
tuperwho
I like the idea of A/N for spinal shivers --- if only you had more energy

I wanted to try this, but I haven't found any elemental daggers.

I too chose A/R. the pet helps keep dmg away, and apply poison with bleeding and then deep wound make for a lot of dmg real fast. Long as you're smart enough to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, you can beat the hell out of any caster, and then teleport back to the monk. I've also thought about some of the ranger stances for speed (such as storm chaser), have yet to test it.

Hmmm...
I am running a A/Mo right now (protection for now)
I am going to run a A/R as well... the theory being take Wilderness to 12... lay traps... run to opponent aggro... recall back to perfect center of traps... though perhaps being a R/A would work better for that... expertise and wilderness runes... with Shadow Arts.

I chose A/W for critical strikes, dagger mastery, deadly arts or shadow arts, and some into tactics. Tactics are for "watch yourself" and bonnetis and some other defensive stances, bonnetis will (hopefully) take care of the energy problem because combos are perfect for raising adrenaline. I don't know to have dealy arts or shadow arts or just not have them at all to pump some more into tactics. I'd like deadly arts because of the godly impale, but shadow arts will help me avoid more damage, and vipers defense is a god.

The only elemental daggers I've found....have been Ebon -_-

i chose N becuase there will hopefully be a virulense type move....ill probably remake him though...
Sientir
I chose A/R, and i must say that Tiger's/Bestial Fury is a fun stance to use, but honestly, you probably shouldn't really be using it. On a side note, I found that it was easier to control henchmen with a bow than with daggers (at least, until i remembered about Shift+Ctrl+Space). Still, bow is useful i find, as playing ranger is far easier when handling henchies.

Would I be correct in saying A/R is one of the favourites for PVE assassins..?
Also, could anyone suggest major benefits of being an A/Rt, because that's what I was going to choose..

I went Monk mainly for Live Vicariously (It's a prophecies skill so you must have both campaigns)
Not only does it give me good healing on every attack, but it leaves me enchanted all the time so I can use skills that only work while I'm enchanted

I went Mesmer. I had an idea about using Epidemic to spread out the conditions to other nearby baddies. Havent tried it out yet though.
Darkgift Risen
went a/w for "victory is mine" elite..in theory this skill should really help when u tele in to drop conditions..take damage..VIm..tele out...can't wait to try it out..actually posted a thead asking if anyone has tried this combo out..plus all the defensive skills in the tactics line should really help keep me alive..I know sins aren't supposed to be tanks..but having a little def makes the assasination attempt a little safer..

A/R= Barrage + Critical Strikes, constant barrage as long as you are hitting at least 3 enemies
A/W= Watch Yourself/Stances
A/Mo= Assassins have 4 pips of regen + bonus energy on crits, you figure it out
A/N= See above
A/E= See above
A/Rt = Telebombing.
A/Me = Ultimite in caster shutdown and pressure.

i do not have an assasin but i think a physical secondary (W or R) is a good choice. Ranger, because you could lay down a deadly trap, then when triggered you could unleash your own combos to stack on major conditions, you could also (as suggested many times) poision your weapon. Tigers fury is also a good attack speed buff because it dosent weaken your attacks, but it DOES disable non-atk skills temporarily.
Warrior is popular because of stances, healing siggy, and you build adrenaline extremely fast.
Some assasins might want to try ele out for conjure elements, gotta do huge damage with dual attacks! If youre going for a spellcaster 2ndary you may find a zealous pair of dags helpful.

I originally went A/W, but found that I just wasn't using any of the warrior skills, relying more on the assassin's stealthier skills to stay alive, as opposed to the warrior's "stand there and take it" type skills. A/R might be a nice one, I found much success with that in the 12 vs 12 matches during the preview event, my Black Moa and I smeared people across the jade sea for a while, but that's PvP. For PvE, I finally went with A/Mo, still using 7 assassin skills and one rebirth.
Edit: If you want something with high tanking defense and teleportation, W/A would be better just because the warrior gets more armor and then can still use teleports and daggers if you really want to.

It seem's that everyone's forgetting about upgrades. You can make your daggers do elemental damage with a tang (or the other kind of upgrade, i forget).

Strange Brew
I'm having a go with mes because of fragility. Then poison/blind/bleed etc. with ur assn attacks hmmm....?
