Maybe playing through with the same character, but it's still just gameplay if you're on a new char. If A.Net wanted us only to play the game once, then they'd have added a primary class changer as well (Or unlocked outposts like skills, etc).

Each new character is a new entity, a new individual in the game world if you want to RP. It is ludicrous to assume that that new player should have access to everywhere someone else has access to. I would only see playing the game itself as grind if I had to do it more than once with the same character, or if I had to delete characters to try another class (Fortunatly that shouldn't be an issue for much longer).

RP in GW?

Man some people have no lifes. Its a game. I play one time through to absorb the story line and all the pretty colors. After that its just a waste of my day. I should not have to grind through the game again just because I decide to make a new character.

Grind means you do something multiple times to accomplish a goal you have already acheived.

I should be given the choice to play the content again or simple make a new character and take him to end game. The gates can be a good idea but they have been implemented wrong. If they made a tracker on your account for each area you have unlocked and let the gates open if you have unlocked that area on the account before. If anyone in the party has not unlocked that area on their account the gate is shut.

That would prevent runners rushing new players through the content while giving the players that have already been through it the choice of having their character run through.

Choice is good. Telling me I HAVE to play the game THIS way is not. No one should tell me how to play the game and what is enjoyable to me.

Now they want us to play the game! Bluddy hell,

Yes if youve played the game a million times and just want to make a new character, doors can be annoying. But you a) save money or even gain it by questing.

You get better at your new profession, there where areas of prophecies that where pointless.. most of kryta and magumma... only reason id go there is to get skills.

Ok, you played through the game with one character. Go play something else now.

Or, you can choose to play through it again with a new character -- nobody is forcing you to "grind" through the game again. It is their game design -- your choice to play it again or not.

I'm amazed that people are already complaining about not being able to be run places...there is no way in hell any normal person could have completed the game the first time around by now. And if you don't want to actually play the first time around...

Numerous players have completed the factions campain by now, and I am one of them. I was i believe 2-3 days behind the first to finish. Please note, however, that from what I have seen, anyone that is not a very good player will not be able to complete the game at all - FINALY A CHALENGE WITHOUT COOKIE-CUTTER BUILDS : )

I feel like such a slow poke ; from my own progress (and that of the people in my guild), I didn't think many people had finished the game by now (other than a select few)

But I think, even in light of this, it is still legit to assume that the amount of people wanting runs should still be a smaller number.

I haven't read the thread in full but when someone has gotten through most of the game they will fiigure away to run ppl.It is no different like it was in prophecies once they capped charge and had good armor and skills they gave Lornor's Pass a go.I just can't wait to find some 55 farming grounds.I actually got my Monk to the first mission with Mhelno and co with a 55.I tried that mission with henchies with my Warrior didn't beat it though and the usual to many of us Warriors and not enough Monks.

I don't always 55 with my Monk just I her set up that way not for normal Monking as I believe in that.

PvE is the Metagame

The only reason for locking the gates is to stop runners and to slow down bot users.

Well today I can't play with my guild members because I'm a mission behind them. And no, I will not ask them for doing the same shit again. I would like to skip a mission.. BUT I have NO CHOICE, I am FORCED to play the game in the only limited way (missions only). And why ? Because people may rush to town xyz. Now I am forced to play with stupid random groups, kiddys and retards.

If there was no forgerun, we'd be complaining about sanctum cay, THK, and Dragon's Lair.

I found the gates frustrating because i didnt feel like doing missions and was basically running around revealing the map with henchies, seeing what types of enemies lurk where, etc (exploring FTW!).

Oh well...*goes back to material farming*

wow a whole first page of morons who dont understand the whole point. sure playing through the game first time is fun but definately not for the 4th or 5th time of doing the same BORING early missions again and again, unlocked gates for those who already did the missions on a previous character would be best.
i got bored of the flood in halo, i dont need to keep battling them over and over again in factions.

The locked gates are for specific goals to get to specific points, such as having to do THK to progress. The locked gates act as the oceans you couldn't run across anyhow (Jade Sea excepted of course...)

Not every place has a locked gate and there plenty to explore. Just certain steps must be taken, is all, to get to certain areas of the world.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but once you've unlocked a city, the gates are no longer locked...

What would happen if a character that has already unlocked a specific town, groups with a new character, and then runs to the town he unlocked earlier when playing through the game? Would the new character be able to enter, or would the runner be barred from the gate because he has a new guy in the party?

If someone in the party can't get in, none of you can.

Best feature of the new game i think. So tired of people not having a clue how to play their characters at ring of fire, thk, tombs, etc.

The ONLY portal that remotely annoyed me thus far is the one preventing me from getting to Calvon. The rest are well placed and their effect is a good one. Sortin out the noobs with fast friends.

I'm not sure that the reason of locked gates or not but I have done the missions with PUGs and I have not failed one yet or actually died.

People who are doing the missions now are professional.

I guess this way filters everyone that just relies on runners to get to places.
I do not mind this system.

I'm sure that will change in a month or so once other players start getting to these areas.

Each campaign is diffrent, in the pre with all this running around A to B to C back to B back to A, so far is not bothering me.

I think it's get's on people nerve's due to how much of a hassle it is.. at the same time the advancement rate is insane (and I love it). Compare how long and what you had to do to get to lvl 20 in C1 and compare it to C2.

Now this expreience is with "pre". Still yet to get to post in factions.

I've been playing through with both a Tyrian character and Canthan character (doing all quests and missions) and have been enjoying it. I'm playing differently than when I started in Prophecies I realized. When I saw this thread I realized some people may have a problem. In Prophecies, I explored all the areas up until where the next mission dropped you off and then went back and did the mission to 'warp' you there (ex: explored to Yak's Bend then went back and did Nolani). I have a guildie playing Prophecies (who is fairly new) and from what I understand (he likes to solo alot), he has cleared and explored everything in Ascalon up into the Northern Shiverpeaks (may be near Kryta now) because he likes to adventure and kill stuff along the way. He hasn't done a single mission yet I believe (or has done one or two). He's preparing to do that.

At first I thought, cool no more runners. Then I thought, people like my guildie (and how I played Prophecies) are gonna be turned off by this. Then I actually looked more closely at the map and where I had been (only up through Senji's place/Canthan Ascension). If you look at it, none of the explorable areas are closed off except Shadow's Passage (which shouldn't really count as a real explorable area since its just a tunnel. It may be different later on (someone mentioned Cavalon), but someone can go from Kaineng Center through Byway to Marketplace, then through Bazaar to undercity or into the Skyway (unless it is locked). From the skyway I don't know where you go other than the Temple. On Shinj Jae you could go everywhere, just not into the missions (which my Tyrians could not do, but mapped everything else). The perception is more that you can no longer just get into the mission outposts, but everything else seems to be available without gates (dunno about Senji's from the Skyway). The only explorable areas not available are the ones that were missions (missions turning into explorable areas after completion). In that case you are no worse off than in Prophecies where you couldn't explore missions after you completed them anyways. Maybe someone who has made it further than I have can clear up if there are many explorable areas that you absolutely cannot get to without the missions. The only ones I remember from the preview were the two after Gyala and the equiv on the Kurzick side, both which had towns housing the 15k armour.

If that is the case, you should still be able to explore the non-mission areas, but if you want to do the missions, you have to do all of them. I think we'll know more as people explore different sections (or if the people who have already done everything can tell us something). In prophecies you still couldn't get to the desert or fire islands without doing at least those the one appropriate mission for each (relating to the southern most areas on Luxon/Kurzick sides).

My opinion on this:
This update doesnt make any sense..
The first time you play, you will do (almost) all quests and missions etcetera. If you dont, you spoil your own gameplay...
So after the first time of playing through, you might get another character to do all missions, and after that even more. But then I think close to all people get sick of it and just want that lvl 20. So whats wrong with running then? And I know the problem at the end of prophecies.. I just did an attempt on Ring of Fire with a mission this morning, and we got screwed by 2 warrior (why is it always warriors...) noobs.
And still I think you should be able to take that problem for what it is just so yours, or if you dont want it yourself, someone elses 3432622th character can be run and get to lvl 20 with good armor, skills etc asap.

I'm getting a little worried about the attitude of so many players who seem to find that kids and players who are not 'skilled' enough have no right to proceed in the game. Games are meant to be fun for everyone! It does not matter how good you are. It does not matter how you like to play the game. Running, grinding, adventuring, gathering skills, its all equal. As long as people have fun! We dont need paternalism.

I agree. While it can be very annoying to be in a sub-par group, it's more annoying that so many people get so worked up about how *other* people play the game. It's none of their business, and frankly, it's quite rude.

I've been trying to do the second 15 attb. point quest, but I can't finish because the henchmen are to glaringly retarded. My friend can't get into the quest with me because of the locked gate. Ah well, I guess I have to go off and grab a PuG of starter assassins.

When i started up the game i got to the first section, for my GW1 old toon. I grabbed all the quests and headed out exploring, i wanted to just wander about. Spending 20 odd minutes only to find out i cant really go anywhere, hmmmm.

Most of the people in my guild went to Marketplace and then to Shing Jae Island without doing anything. I think the Bazaar was open to from Marketplace, though I can't be sure.. I did have that feeling though with the gates.

Huh? I finished the game Saturday night, 3 days after it went live.

I can't believe runners are already cropping up in this game. There are half the missions of Chapter 1, you can now go from zero to level 20 in less than a day if you wanted, and finish the game about twice as fast as you could before.

It was almost painfully easy. But of course, everyhting about this game is instant gratification for some folks. I thought taking 3 days was bad.

I would like to add my voice to those who, like I, did not like this innovation -- these closed gates. I like just *exploring*, wandering here and there, looking at the views, tackling random mobs, and it is really very annoying to spot a warp, fight your way through to it and find that you cannot get further. I feel limited in my choices and confined within narrow limits.

I would understand if I found very powerful monsters in the new area, the monsters that I wouldn't be able to defeat -- at least this would show me that I must prepare better or rethink my strategy before moving further (like way to Lornar's Pass from Beacon's Perch). But these closed doors and the forced linearity really can be very prohibitive and annoying.
