Tyria Vs Cantha
ignis
now, I've been in GW since WPE (and then BWE's) so you can say my monk was brought up in Tyria. like most people here I've been waiting for Factions with great anticipation, and when I was launched I rushed to explore the new continent.
however, this time something was different. something didn't feel right. the atmosphere has changed, and I can't say it changed to better. but that feel of adventure that I had when I played through Tyrian missions was gone.
so I am wondering if there's anybody else here who feels the same way. I know I can't keep coming back to Tyria because I simply like it better than Cantha.

The only reason theres less of a sense of adventure is it is still Guild Wars. It's just more content. All the new areas are great first time I see them, but for me, that little something mission is because it just isn't a new game. It really is an expansion.
J3mo
I don't really like the poor city part, nor those dark woods (Kurzick)
But The starters island and the Luxon area are verrry nice ^^

I'm finding the opposite. I prefer the "look and feel" of Cantha so far. Seems much more deeply immersive to me.
MasterDinadan
It's definatly a different feel, but I have to say that I like the explorable areas in Kaineng. It's very cool that your in the middle of a huge city and there's still monsters and stuff.
It reminded of City of Heroes, and I absolutely loved the environment of City of Heroes (the game takes place entirely in a single city seperated into different zones)

as i will never forget my homeland in Tyria i do prefer Cantha, much more beautiful since there is no shiverpeaks (Living in wisconsin i get enough i hate getting reminded of it)

The massive ghetto we call the "city" gives me mixed feelings. On one hand it seems really cool that its a city, and we have never been given the opportunity to fight in a city setting before. On the other hand, it is extremely drab, dark, and the walls feel extremely 2D.

Things will probably change, but for now the most fun part of GW:Fs for me is getting my Mesmer back to Tyria. 'Course, I never finished the game anyway.

I kinda am getting tired of the city. Factions is harder than Tyria, that's for sure. The locations we were shown during the FPE (that being in that field and beyond) are now obviously a ways through the game. Kinda bugging me, as I liked those areas.
As for Tyria vs. Cantha....I dunno. There's some things I like about Cantha, to be sure, but it feels like I'm only slowly crawling on my way out of the city. >.<
On a side note, it is freakin' hard for an Assassin to get a group. Anyway...

Cantha sure doesnt have the feel of Tyria, I know I hate being all cooped up in the city like thats all trashed in Cantha, no it doesnt have the feel of the first time I've went through the Tyria Missions.
I do like it, just gotta get use to it.

Tyria has that traditional RPG feel. Its very diverse. You go from waste lands to snowy mountains to tropics to jungle to desert then to an evil place.
In Cantha you start in a nice rural area, then to a well established city, then more then enough slums (Bah I got bored of the undercity so fast), then jade sea or petrified forest (both which repeat themself rather often). Then finally back into the slums, then into the city.
Tyria = A nice progressing feel, thus gives you the feeling of an adventure.
Cantha = A lot of back tracking, thus gives you the feeling of being a messanger boy.
My personal thoughts, less slums in Cantha. More regal "Market Place" type enviorments.

The city doesn't bother me. I still prefer Tyria, but I think Factions is no longer about the casual gamer. The quests are way too long for a short hop before work or before going somewhere.

I will always like Tryia just the thought of sitting in fishermans haven is nice place to get warm when it is winter where I am or yaks when it is to hot.It will be nice when Ascalon returns to it former glory of not looking like Nuclear Waste land.I really hate the Tengu over there.
Yes this is called Guild Wars about Guilds battleing it out with each other but it is a game no less and it is about haveing fun with it otherwise there would be no fun just by playing PvP all the time.I thought that once I got to post in beta I would be doing just that and never knew what guild I would be playing for. This where I get the misconception of it being Guild Wars as in Tryria guilds should hold certian terrian and not just 2 sided factions.I thought when I went through the academy I would be looking for guild to join and fighting guilds all over the place not just in halls.

I like the new environment better in Cantha, But i feel the same as the OP. In Tyria, quest to gain skills push me further into the game and opens new environments to explore, in short adventure.
In Cantha, i find 20+ quest in just 3 zones of the places with just different NPCs and they only large amounts of exp to push me to level and minute amounts of gold. Sorry buying skills were never something i enjoy.
As i have mentioned before, though i like factions, i find it hard to recommend to others to buy it.

Tyria, less crime against humanity!

Anet really rushed this one...really crap quests, everything repeats itself...
I believe that in a month its simply going to be Farm Wars to me

I can't keep coming back to some areas in Tyria. Quarrel Falls and Denravi, Fisherman's Heaven and Lion's Arch - so far I have not found a worthy substitute for those beauties in Cantha.
under no circumstances am I criticizing Cantha, I like the fact that there's something more to explore, I love the new title system and other improvements. I just can't find anything in Cantha that would make me stop and go "woooow, this is some awesome landscape there" like I did and still do in Tyria. I didn't feel that any quest or mission (like the Villainy of Galrath, THK , Riverside Province or Gates of Kryta) in Cantha was worth doing again.
I can't wait for E3 2006 to see what's coming in Chapter 3 and no matter what they're making I'm sure as hell getting it.

The shrines and temples are breathtaking, the cityscapes (full of pathing nightmares and texture anomalies) are... bad.
I'll be buying Factions soon, but rather reluctantly. Two more mule characters and some sweet new armors and items are the biggest draw for me.

I agree with most of you, cantha isnt particularly good, it all feels rushed, like all a-net are trying to do is get more money for cheap cost. The graphics of some places are a really good, amazing infact, but the quests and the missions! most bugged game ive ever come across in my whole life! And a-net havent done to well with thier anti farming recently....econemy can stick its head between its knee's and kiss its ass good bye Thier basicly killing gw....
Epinephrine
Finding it much more open. You aren't as hemmed in (at least so far, I'm not far into the game, only on second mission - I'm taking my time) - what I mean is that for example you can go across a valley in a veriety of ways, and hills that would have been direction forcing in GW:P aren't. It's nice.

Threads like this make me nervous. The ratio of positive things ive heard about Factions to the negatives is 1:100 respectivly.
Factions isnt perfect, no. Most MMORPGs arent at launch. Thats what patches are for.
The first guild wars was great, no doubt, but i also really enjoy the added content of Cantha. Sure its no revolution. It wasnt supposed to be, was it? It is another story to follow, more lands to explore.
I just dont want to see anyone stop playing Guild Wars just because of a few kinks that need to be bumped out by Anet. I want people to see the great aspects of guild wars factions too. How many other MMORPGs can you name with this ammount of content that are FREE per month? I think that based on what's needed to play it, money and system specs, plus the ammount of content and playability, Guild Wars is an incredibly accessible series.
Every voyage starts with a splash. You need to wait till the ripples disappear before you can apprecaite the ocean you're floating on.

I'm with the OP: Cantha just doesn't feel right. It's all rushed, and no adventure or exploration. Levels are thrown at you like mad, you never get a surprise skill given to you to learn how to use with your build. Hell, there's even a 15 attribute quest on the newbie island. In Tyria, you would spend hours exploring and admiring Pre-searing Ascalon. In Ascalon, you would choose between doing missions or quests in which order, and you could walk to where you wanted to go, or rush along with the missions. Everything in Cantha is hand-holding. Nothing is worse than exploring Kinya, making your way to the zone icon and LOCKED GATE. No cookies for you.

Tyria - A lot more open and freedom to explore / go where you want.
Cantha - Seems to be a lot more closed in and 'stuffy' compared to Tyria.
I think this game has a *lot* less replay value in it compared to Tyria, unfortunately.

yah the locked doors thing pretty much cut the throat on my enthusiasm for exploration.
tyria pve had a bit of cool factor when you could just struggle forward with crazy DP trying to find that next town/outpost, the little zone symbol was like a beacon of hope - reward for pushing beyond the 3am barrier
meanwhile cantha, you see the zone symbol and you think - now if i slowly and strategically work my way through mobs to it, will i actually get anywhere?
there is a limited sense of exploring in cantha, totally feels like some zelda or final fantasy type questing, sure you get access to everything youve been to before, but only one single path forward.

Me too. It feels really different playing Factions.

Cantha should have been like SF, free update ..
being stuck for countless hours in this city cuz of closed doors, bugged missions and poorly designed quest where u gotta play as a mailman is pissin me off since it's not what we saw last month in the preview ... i m stuck in Vizuna Square cuz of bugs and the new "u must have a 24/7 active geek guild" idea
even w/o seeing what comes next i'm sure i wont do the game twice for my other chars ... i prefer the freedom of Tyria
finally, this should have been released 2 months or so later .. i aint paying for a beta version of this product. While doing missions, i already have to think about the monk, to see if he's gonna heal, how to pull and dodge patrols...dont wanna wonder if the NPC's gonna be stuck or not !!
I also dont wanna retry 5 times a mission i failed cuz a programmer didnt do his damn job
Tyria Wins. Flawless Victory

I hate the new mission towns, not the missions themselves but the the 3 sword things. I liked the old way, mission + bonus. That was way better than the current system. Hopefully chapter 3 will bring that back.

PS: let's start a petition for expanding Tyria. I'm sure ANet have some areas that didn't make it into the final version of GW, others were left in planning stages. anyway, my point is that map of Tyria has rather too many blank spaces which I am sure the devs could fill if there was demand. I could wait a year or two, whether it is chapter 3 or 4, but more than anything I would love to see more content in Tyria.
Witchblade
yeah i hope they'll add a few more stuff on that map
Laibeus Lord
I prefer Cantha over Tyria.
I'll be spending more than half of my time in Cantha than Tyria now.
Well let's wait for Campaign 3!!

Good grief. I cant believe some of you are saying that Cantha looks cheap and rushed and that ANET did a halfassed job on it. It looks better than any MMO that I've ever played. It's a beautiful piece of work.
Of course there are problems with it. I still dont like how limited in movement over the terrain in GW is. And other minor things but I think most of you have already complained enough to cover my share.
Seriously, if you're saying that this game looks cheap, I'd like to see you point out a better looking one.

I think Factions sent you hitting the ground running and there was thought this time on how to use your char for the first time.. unlike Tyria where you had to wait for the help tool to show up. There is "training" and learning how to use your char and what the different icons mean. That'd be great for first timers... boring for the rest of us.. that's why they gave us a choice And i love that they made each quest reward a high enough xp so you could join in w/ the tyrians when you got to the main land.. albeit it is a lot harder.. but I see it as a challenge
Kalysha Katana
As a roleplayer/explorer I am ultimately disapointed in Factions.
I can see the direction Anet are going and it doesn't bode well for the likes of me. Blocked gates, a token level up system which feels like a mad rush, etc, etc. Obviously I don't want a ridiculous grind like in some other games but the the PvE in Prophecies was just about right imo. They struck a nice balance with that chapter. However the hardcore PvPers didn't like it. So it seems Anet has gone their way with this one....
There are plus points in Factions though. I do like some of the new areas, the graphics update, new armours, etc. Also like the Ritualist profession. Had great fun at times playing my new Rt/R....but just wish the PvE didn't feel so worthless.
Oh well, can't please all the people all the time I guess.

Anyway thats my views on cantha.
Angel Develin
I like the new look, and that it's a bit harder then tyria.
I don't like the super fast power lvl character part, and we do get a lot of new players that are at lvl 20 and don't know what they are doing.
The big city's are not as good as what I had hoped for, I think the best looking large city is still Lions Arch.
I agree about the locked gates, and the only reason for this is that I most of times can't get a good team and must wait for some friends to be online to finish the quest and missions.
The fact that rare material and runes are sold out all the times -_-, come on you know how it feels to w8 for rune trader to get some runes and hope to be the firt 1 to buy it. (more runes and rare material plz).
The new title system is cool, I love it when every body can have it that no 1 is asking for rank/title for PVE, its just for fun and it shows how good or how much you have played on that character and that it does not apply to all characters.
I think with all of this Cantha is going to be realy fun when every 1 done the most parts or finished the main mission.
I realy like the new parts and the game and some of the changes.
I only hope that chapter 3 is worth 70 euro, I must say that this is not.
ok, ok the dance is very cool and the art book and stuff but come on tyria was/is realy cool. (worth 70 euro)
