Yeah, I agree with you there. The story that Mhenlo gives you in Cantha follows that line of reasoning. The part about Ascalon being in ruins and <spoilerrurikbeingdeadspoiler> is explained as already happening. I don't know how they could circumvent that, but it definitely means cross-over characters are left with about 1/4 or so of the game unavailable (rough guess).
Concerning the other question, nothing is mapped. You have to go back to Ascalon City and the other areas yourself. You can enter the mission outpost, but cannot 'Enter Mission'. It stated you are from a disallowed campaign. If you are asking for purposes of becoming a Tyrian Cartographer, fear not. Only explorable areas (from what we've seen) count towards the percentage mapped, not mission areas.
Also, when you cross over, you start in a place called Lion's Gate. It's the little mini-town inside the Gates of Kryta mission where the gates are. The other gates are all closed. It's like a quarantine zone. That's the only part of the Gates of Kryta mission zone you will see.
