Yup, materials and mini-pets are the ways to go now. SF farming is dead, rune farming is dead, ecto farming is almost dead...kinda sad, but oh well.

I think everyone knows what they should be doing to make money, but not when to do it. Here's an excellent, risk free, virtually painless way. Spend every penny you have on crafting materials (hides/steel ingots/ cloth/etc) before every expansion. It doubled my total platinum count with the release of factions. Steel ingots went from 140 gold to 300 gold. Also, holding more elastic forms of currency such as gold, dyes, and basic crafting materials are a MUCH more secure way to preserve your money than swords and ectos and such. Stick to the basics.

In my opinion....

Horde gold and basic materials, a good trader NEVER hordes big items.

Dyes are going to stay rather static from now on.

Take advantage of game changing events (releases, patches, etc)

Mini pets are going to decline in value soon. I stay away from anything that is purely aesthestic in the long run. While they may have huge spikes once in a while, they are too unreliable.

Just my 2 cents. Some of this is really basic and already stated, but it might come in useful.

Where do you guys sell your materials? In both prophecies and factions? And how much on average do you usually sell them for? Thanks.

You mean the mini pets that everyone will get when they have had their game for a year or bought a ce. That's what I'm waiting for. In a few more months I'll have one of my own that I can trade with for the one I would prefer. If I don't give it away (yes give it away). The prices bing charged for these just shows how some people are so desperate to maintain their weath. Buying from the noobs who bough the CE for a low (but what is actually high to them) price then turn around and sell it for more (most likely to some other noob who doesn't know that if they just wait they will be given one). Exploiting player knowledge (or lack of). Lame.

The pets come with the CEs and when you owned your GW account for a year. Another useless collectors item brought to you by anet. Something that would be usefull in playing the game would be a better thank you. Like a unique skinned weapon with atleast decent stats (customized of course so you couldn't make a profit).

Whenever I find myself in a town with time to spare and see someone selling them say to everyone to not waste their money. They don't do anything and you'll get one for free eventually anyway.

Geez Hunter, the forum topic is "how to make money in Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions"... not "How does Hunter jinx people's ways of making money in Guild Wars"

This is quite true to some degree. Usually it is better to just sell something good when you get it as I like to say "Cash is cash is cash, and a sword is not cash until you sell it"

Personally, I like just keep most of my money in just pure money forms and maybe some materials although I don't have enough inventory space to hold a lot of them (due to different sets of armors as well as all those purely athetic items that I love to hoard). But I do find that keeping all my money as just money makes me feel a lot more safe about it. I sold a 1/3 of my ectos and shards before faction came out knowing that it'll probably drop. Now that I think about it, I should've probably sold all of it.

I'm usually horrible at making and keeping money in GW but selling Faction materials (re: Jadeite, Amber) is, at least for the moment, VERY profitable. Last night I went from not being able to afford a single piece of 15k Canthan armor to buying the entire set with gold to spare. And those materials were earned on one character from the Faction I earned doing the Befriending quests and the subsequent quests along the main plot (13 Amber, 10 Jadeite). It really isn't that difficult to build up and it's selling anywhere from 2-4k right now.

Has anyone tried selling the Candy weapons/shields to people who didn't get them (e.g people who have just bought factions only) or other holiday items like the halowe'en ones? What is the market in that like?

Nominal, the market for them just isn't big enough.
