Do you use your secondary?

I stand by the theory that all the classes can function well as stand-alones. That includes farming, soloing, and both henchy and other player groups. Of course, secondaries can be a great benefit, but are far from necessary. As it stands, my mesmer, ranger, and elementalist rarely use their secondaries (unless I'm going for a particular build or if I want a monk res.). My warrior, on the other hand, has been W/R using a few wilderness survival skills since his creation 11 months ago, and that will not change. Still, even when I kick my secondaries into the mix, it's usually just for a particular skill (or maybe 2) in my skillbar.
Edit: I expect my future assassin to use only assassin skills, too. There are just so many skills I want to use between his 4 attribute lines, there simply isn't enough attribute points to spread as is, let alone with a secondary line.

I have used my Elem secondary quite a bit so far with my Rit. I like channeling and air magic. It is fun.
With my other characters I used the secondaries quite often. My W/R uses at least one if not more Ranger skills. My N/Me uses many Mesmer skills especially domination ones. However, My monk uses just monk skills.

I've found that I only use 1-2 secondary skills no matter what my profession is. My air spiking Ele/Mes uses all ELe skills, my Mes/Mo uses all Mesmer except a res spell. I will use my secondary for a particular build occasionally but generally use my primary.
Playing a Ri/N now and use minions alot more than secondary skills with other builds I have played.

I often use my scondary with my E/Mo, but only usually to res fallen party members or to heal myself every once in a while.
On my rt/a that I am soon going to make, I assume that I will be using ritualist for offensive and defensive and mainly using assassin for shadow stepping (I love that skill!).

This is so very wrong. Even in PvE, it's beneficial to make use of your secondary to increase your energy management options. E-drain, Mantra of Recall, Inspired Hex/Revealed Hex, Channeling, Offering of Blood are all very useful skills that will keep you healing in heated battles without the need for a forced retreat due to lack of energy. (Channeling is situational and may require you to be too close in PvE. YMMV. I'd rather take something else, but I've seen folks make good use of channeling.)

This part is good. A good skill point distribution is 10 (secondary energy management line), 16/15 - Heal or Prot, 9/11 - Divine. (Some people like more in DF. Some prefer to put the points into heal.) If you are running a boon prot, simply switch the superior and minor so that you can get 15 or 16 into DF.On the subject of the OP though, I find that very frequently when I am learning to play a new class, I use solely their skill line and completely ignore my secondary. After I am accustomed to the purpose of that class, I begin to incorporate from a secondary profession. |
