I would like an opoin to check and show blood splatter if you wanted, alot of other games have this.

Might cause an M rating if they do that. That would very much hurt sales.

I dont see how optional blood (while no wounds, decapitations, etc) can be THAT bad.
Kaguya
They could always implement a parental lock for the blood splatters
Bump for effects!
VVV-- how will an effect that is diplayed when someone gets hit add to lag, you don't have to send the blood splatters over the network, the hits are already transmitted anyways. And if it can be disabled, it won't add to graphics engine workload. "unneeded" is not a valid argument either

/signed..... idk why ppl are complaining about lag... if GW really wanted to add blood they can EASILY make it w/o lag... BUT i do agree the rating will have to change... and thats a nono, so i dont think this will happen,
led-zep
maybe an age rating would be good, there'd be less idiotic kids playng screaming noob at everyone.

M ratings are fine and dandy and don't affect sales.

No!! many newer MMO's don't have it.. its not a bloody game, and it doesn't need to be.. (unnecessary feature)
I really don't want to see this game go down the line of Diablo, really sorry, but I just can't see that kind of gore in a game like this

i agree wit led-zep, m-rating may get rid of all teh younger idiots, which is a BIG thing imo. less idiots = less lag overall = more fun = happy ppl. anyways, ppl like m=rated BECAUSE they're m=rated, or at least i do. ive played lots o fps's, and the whole blood thing makes the experience more realistic, and isnt that wut an rpg's supposed to be? more realistic???

M-rating would hurt anything. M probably wouldn't happen anyway though, IMO. And M ratings don't stop brats from getting their parents to buy GTA and other M games for 'em. Sad but true. Moron parents who don't pay attention to what their kids play. But that's another rant for another thread.

Doesn't matter to me, How about Quivers, new cape type designs, new armors, playable races, I don't know, anything else could be a better addition, but blood, ok, that doesn't impress me but why not add it.
I think turning to the gore factor to be enjoyable to people who enjoy violence is a weak addition, there are plenty of exciting and enjoyable things that would be much more appreciated by many, instead of making an addition that will spawn just as many dislikes as likes, as well as mark the game as another blood and guts game.
As long as it can be turned off, I don't care, Graphics are never going to slow down my gameplay as much as the connectivity, so I don't care about the lag, but I find this a very weak addition to add to the game in light of a multitude of better options. I would rather see cool mist running off of enemies who have Ice hexes on them, and small flames when your burning, and the player holds his arm between actions if he has deep wound, blood splatters are a far last place for visual additions IMO. Furthermore, you can already identify an enemy with bleeding by the pink degen bar, so it isn't providing an identification that we don't have, unlike Deep wound or Ice Hex slowing, or even weakness.

I wouldn't mind blood, atleast it'd look better than it does now.
It can't wrap my mind around the fact that I cause an explosion when I gut someone...
Lag: Turn it off
Disgust: Turn it off
M-rating: This is ridiculous, as if kids ever stopped playing games because they saw blood; blood is APPEALING to blokes (majority of player base).
To the above poster: Uhm, there ARE flames when you burn.

Blood won't make the game play any different.
Not to mention that the ESRB is already on a rampage about ratings as it is.

I dont see any reason at all not to have it optional. Now i dont want huge amounts of blood everywhere, but just a small amount to make it more realistic.

I definitely want to see blood, especially when they have bleeding. Not just some stupid little red cloud with probably causes more lag than red ont he ground.

hmmm, one of the only games that has an m-rating that i can think of right now is ninja gaiden (kickass game yo). sure, u hack things to bits, but the amt of blood is sweet imo. ots incredibly realistic, cuz when u hit sumthin it bleeds, when sumthin hits u, u bleed. i like realism, annd imo, thas wut rpgs nowadays seem to be all about. optional is a good idea tho, that may be the thing that keeps the rationg down.

Some parents are careless enough to buy video games for their kids that include strippers and 1000 gallons of blood per enemy. Take GTA Vice City for example.

I don't see why ppl DON'T see the OPTION part... "blood causes lag" surely it does, but it's optional.
another thing too, since when did ratings stop kids in the age of 12 to buy and/or play a game rated M? Generaly if the salesman /woman doesn't sell it to a kid, then the kid just goes to a friend that can buy the game or the parents.

A couple things to consider here. First of all, there is Germany. Germany is absolutely hardcore against violence in video games. Since this is an international game, they will want to appeal to that.
Of course, they could just make the German version not even have the option, as so many other games do.
But secondly there is the issue with Jack Thompson. If you don't know who he is, he's a lawyer in the US who is really anti-video game. And the thing is, he's sort of making headway. Some politicians (like Hilary Clinton) are set on making the ratings more enforced. I'm not sure I neccessarily disagree with them, but we really need to see what's going to happen with that first. The very definitions of the ratings may actually change in the future in the states (which I wouldn't agree with, but then, I'm not in the states). In summery, ratings are a hot issue right now and ANet may want to stay on the side of caution.
Thirdly, making a change like this means they would have to have the ESRB re-rate the game. Actually, I kind of wonder if they can make this change. Can they do something that changes the rating to a game that has already been sold to people? A parent buys it for their child with one rating, and then a patch makes a change that raises the rating after the fact. I don't know if they can do that.
Having said all that, I don't think a little bit of blood neccessarily changes the rating. It's almost moot anyway since this game is online and they need the qualifier "gaming experience may change online."
A little blood wouldn't hurt, but it's not neccessary. And given the potential complications, I doubt they would put it in. If I believed it was as easy as just putting it in, I would sign this.

Who cares if they change the rating? It might weed out some 5 year olds from idling all day and dancing constantly while doing nothing for the game.

Though I don't think putting in blood would neccessarily change the rating, it's just not a sensible thing to do for ArenaNet. You can scream "screw the governement!" all you like, but that doesn't change the facts. Putting in blood could be headache for them and in the end it's inconsequential to the game anyway.
