Question About Alliance Battles

After a long time of not getting any opposing group when trying to jump into an alliance battle, I finally got in one (Fort Aspenwood). A brief message popped up with objectives, not very explanatory, and then everyone began running around in a completely uncoordinated fashion. Huh? Does anyone know how these are really supposed to work?
