WOW fan...Buy faction or the first guild wars?
kakashi84
hi guys,im considering crossing over to guild wars..but im pondering which guild wars version i should buy..the latest expansion or the first guild wars..i cant made up my mind because i've heard lots of negative comments about factions.. but is there still alot of people playing the original guild wars? how is the gameplya as compared to WoW?
The Real Roy Keane
If you're going to buy a version of guild wars, I'd definitely choose the original over factions-there's more to see and to do, as well as a much wider variety of core skills. Having never played WoW, I couldn't tell you which I feel is the superior game-though by all accounts, GW has far superior PvP, but will leave you cold if character progression is your thing.
Jetdoc
If you're looking for a similar game to WoW, then buy the original Guild Wars.
If you're looking for something different (primarily competing against/killing other players), then Factions is the way to start. If you buy Factions and enjoy it, you'll likely buy the original one shortly thereafter.

thanks for your feedback.. i think i will buy the original guild wars..but im worried most people will already have moved on to factions..by the way,is there a ranking system in guild wars? my rank in WOW is sergeant major..im sure Wow players understand what im talking about..
Maxiemonster
Get the original Guild Wars. With the original Factions, it took several months for people to start complaining, but since the Factions release, people complained about it. Just buy Factions when you like the original Guild Wars enough, it should be cheaper in the first place, so it's a great way to try it out (if you haven't already).

In PvP, there is a special place called the Hall of Heroes, found by going through battles in Heroe's Ascent. By winning battles you collect fame, which increases as you win consecutive fights. As soon as you hit rank 3 in fame (which is 180 fame) you get a title as well as a /emote which shows off that title via an animal (deer for rank 3)
This rank can't go up or down unlike WoW and you will keep it on all characters.

There are still a lot of people playing the Original Prophecies campaign. I would definitely start there. I think its a bigger place to explore and "learn" how to play the game, all the ins and outs and so forth. I think the first game has a bit more "hand holding" and is great at guiding you and teaching you the mechanics of Guild Wars. Althought they say Factions is a stand alone game, I really believe its to your own benefit to play Prophecies first.
Mustache Mayhem
I'd go with the original first.. the pre searing is much better- but if you want more of a pve challenge without the eye candy that gets you sucked in or your aim is pvp get factions like jetdoc said- I think you really need both games though if your hardcore pvp
kakashi84
thanks for enlightening me..hope guild wars will be better than wow..the monthly fee is killing me!!
Selus of Amoe
I'm sure you'll enjoy Guild Wars... I played the original first, then I went to WoW, and after 6 months I believe, I just stopped for Factions. The PvP in Guild Wars is WAY more strategic than that of WoW, and WoW's PvE grinding system is pretty annoying sometimes...

Why not both, than venture though the whole game.
Snowman
It depends on how seriously you take your gaming!
From listening to the WoW players in my guild they much prefer Factions because there is alot more variety in Factions, and alot more grinding potential.
But I agree with Fiery, if its PvE your after get both!.. (when you can)
otherwise you might be like these other players who say they have "beat the game twice " think that they have done everything, got bored..and move on.
Even if you do get bored, for the price its well worth playing either for a month or so if you dont find it as addictive as WoW

I have to agree with most everyone above. I'd advise starting off with Prophecies. It's bigger and more beautiful than Factions. Factions is fun and I recommend it to anyone, but it's hard to beat the original.

On what I heard (never played), WoW is mostly based on equipment than skills and strategic. Off course, balanced profession in GW too.
Kassadar
I just buy both i played world of warcraft for a long time and i can say pvp is just more balanced in guildwars.
Questing also better that wow,it isnt like kill 10 of this and colect 100 of that,so guild wars have a good pve story for a pvp game
only -1 point is when you doing a mission and your system crash you need to start over and walk the same route again.
oh btw i dont know what is better for you i also have factions but not played yet i whas starting whit the first edition of guildwars.

Sergeant Major ehh. Im only a Scout.
If i find out your were the one camping my ass I will hunt your down.
Buy the original and enjoy GW. It is a great game.
I am going the other way. Gradual switching from GW to WOW.
What were both looking for is entertainment not boredom.
Bored with GW even with factions.
WOW provides new entertainment and excitment.
I am on a PVP server with WOW and it is mind blowing, hunting down ali and being hunted. It wakes you up.
You should know this ahead of time to enjoy GW.
You will focus on PVE for 3-6 months before you get into PVP (the same with WOW). Then you will transition over to PVP.
Enjoy the Ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WoW's a better (in my opinion), more lasting game, but that's to be expected, as you have to pay monthly.
Nothing stays interesting forever though, been playing since beta and recently got bored and quit, and picked up GW. Also a great game. As everyone else is saying, be sure to grab prophecies before factions. There's still plenty of people playing in it (although not as many as before, of course).

WoW::
great level progression
very immersive
very open-ended
not that great pvp
GW::
not very immersive
very linear
amazing pvp games and arenas
not very character oriented
In all reality, if you want PvE, stay with WoW. If you want to go more PvP, play GW. End of story.

I played WOW, then GW when it came out found out I did not like post searing ascalon. Had a friend drag me through ascalon (after a few months of playing wow) Once I got past ascalon, I really enjoyed the PVE, a good story line and I finally understood why the 8 spell/skill slots, it creates different builds. I was used to WOW with the telos mods and such wanting to spam my spells. Here it is build oriented and you can change your build. I carry various armors for various builds. I carry major curses if i want to SS, Major blood to be a orders necro, and Major Death to MM. Thats 3 different builds using the same character. i just adjust my attribute points and armor and a different type of necro. i am not locked to a certain build with penalty like i was in WOW. In wow I played 2 different druids so i would not have to pay to re adjust my stats or skill selections (thats killer amount of time too) I love GW, and I loved WOW, I just play GW over WOW.

Well first of all, wait a few months, then look for deals offering both games Prophecies and Factions for the same price Factions is now. It wont be long, and it will happen.
Second of all, WoW is a powerfully marketed fantasy world that anyone with a computer knows they can escape to. Compared to what I would call 'good' PC Games of ANY genre, the gameplay and depth within WoW is appalling. I played it for perhaps 4-6 months.
They are wholly different games, GW and WoW, although GW was developed by a team who left WoW development team, I think, after the game took a certain 'direction'.
To clarify. The gameplay in GW is almost purely combat, a rich, tactical, balanced, and thought provoking combat experiance. Although in my experiance GW is the better GAME, anyone looking to come to GW and while away the hours after the kids have gone to bed pretending to be an Elf Druid and speaking Elvish is going to be sorely dissapointed, because the community in GW is sadly over run by the early to mid teens online combat enthuisiasts. In other words the really poor players who can neither spell nor show respect to anyone regardless of what they do where they are or what anyone asks them.
Hopefully A.net will be able to address this final point, but if you are looking for an online game where you and some close friends can use your imagination to role play, WoW currently is far more condusive to that role.
If you want a good game, GW 'owns' WoW, and there is no comparison.
xcutioner
I'd say get both of them.
There's alot to like about both.

Try 10 hours for the original Guild Wars for free. I don't know where the thread is because search is disabled, but people who preordered Guild Wars Factions got a key to give a friend a key to play the original Guild Wars for 10 hours. In this forum, people were giving away keys to people that wanted to try the game. Then, if you still like it, buy the game and add a real key to continue playing those characters (or start a new account).

If you like tons of plot-twists: Prophecies
If you like a linear chase after a single bad guy plot: Factions
If you want your character to be level 20 sooner: Factions
If you want more development time before you reach level 20: Prophecies
If you want more land mass to explore: Prophecies
If you want more content per square inch: Factions

Prophecies is more open ended and more "roleplayable" the tutorial part is the only part I dislike, which they fixed in factions.
Maria The Princess
i think factions is more for those who KNOW how to play GW characters. to start play Prophecies, learn the game with its concepts, do alot of PVP, then decide if you want factions
Kybos
Prophecies

Get Prophecies.

Unlike WoW ranks, the guild ladder rating does not decay over time (although it does reset at the end of every season), but instead it moves up and down as you win and lose battles.
All guilds start with a guild rating of 1000. The matchmaker tries to match you against other guilds with a similar rating to your own. Your rating goes up if you win, and down if you lose. The amount that it goes up or down depends on how high the other guild's rating is compared to your guild's rating.
If you have a 1000 rated guild vs a 1000 rated guild, the winner gains +15 and the loser -15 rating.
But if the match is very lopsided (eg., 1600 rating vs 800 rating), then the rating changes are more dramatic. A very low rated guild would gain +29 for beating a very high rated guild and lose only -1 for losing. On the other hand, a very high rated guild would gain only +1 for beating a very low rated guild and would lose a huge -29 for losing.

As far as Prophecies vs Factions, the starter quests in Factions do a much better job of explaining gameplay mechanics than the starter area of Prophecies. If you do start with Prophecies however, the first thing you should do is make a PvP-only character. This will take you into a PvP tutorial area that also does a much better job of introducing gameplay mechanics than the Prophecies PvE starter area. Finish the PvP tutorial, delete the PvP character, then make a new RP character as normal.

JUST GETTHE ORIGINAL!!! I started the thread "Is Factions worth it?" After reading all that people think about the two games, the original (Prophecies) is just better. I only have the original, and I am very satisfied with it. I have only beat it once, but it has so mich to do. There are so many quests to do. Finding items and earning gold is just so much fun. Unlike other games, you have to be patient while trying to sell an item in the game. Just spam what you are trying to sell and you will find someone soon enough. Joining a guild I think is better than starting your own. That is just me. I am not very good at starting my own. I tried and I bought a guild hall and cape, but didn't have a lot of time to work on getting more members and GvG. This is because my parents are divorced and I can only play Guild Wars every Wednesday and every other weekend. If you get Guild Wars, you should be commited to it (don't let it control your life though). It can drop your grades if you are a student.

Hmmm..may i ask if PvP is still active in Prophecies? And do players go on Raids like in WoW?

Guild Wars is more about providing the player with a tactical, team based, fanstasy combat game. Rather than say a mass communal fantasy based playground.
While you could say WoW is about pretending to be an Elf and going hunting some Orcs, after you have crafted some supplies and learned some new skills, Guild Wars is about getting your mesmer to shut down an enemy elementalists Area of Effect spells, while your necromancer and warrior crush the enemy monk.
Whether you prefer PvE or PvP, Guild Wars is about timing, anticipation, reactions, and 'character development' called 'builds' in Guild Wars.
Raids dont happen per se, but there are a large number of PvP options, ranging from possible 1v1's, all the way up to 12 v 12, or 8v8v8v8v8v8.
Its hard to compare the two, because ultimatly to the dedicated/regular/enthuisiastic player, they offer distinctly different gaming styles.
Kalki
All PvP in GuildWars is done in arenas or competitive missions. There is no world PvP like there is in WoW (at least until the DK system killed world PvP in WoW). In Prophecies you'll get access to 4 vs. 4 and 8 vs. 8 arenas only. In Factions you'll get 12 vs. 12 and competitive missions, along with the 4 vs. 4 and 8 vs. 8 arenas that you'd get if you bought the original (I think). I prefer the PvP gameplay types in Factions over Prophecies as they are much more tactical. Imagine Arathi Basin that actually has lasting appeal cause their are lots of possibilities, and that's what Factions 12 vs. 12 is like.
Also, I'm a GuildWars veteran and I prefer the PvE and story of Factions over the original. You get to level 20 faster, which is where the game really begins, and the flow of the story and writting for quests is superb. In Prophecies towns and missions you'll just find a bunch of boneheads offering to run your through the game for your gold. That to me is the downfall of Prophecies. I tell all my friends to buy Factions first and get the original afterwards.

Ok, I think both factions and prophecies are great games. However definatly get Prophecies over factions. It has much more content than factions and it would be a much better way to see if you like the game. If you enjoy it then later buy factions!
