When I first started playing I grinded it out with my Ranger-elem and finished the game, but didn't find too many good things or make much gold. I started using henchies to do those fire islands for chests. Made enough to get some decent weopons, but still never broke 100k. I stopped playing for a while and came back to try a standard warmonk. Took him to FoW and then the HoH when the new greens came out. I knew after 2 days of the new greens dropping and my 1st 5 man run that there would be an abundance of uber greens. That's when I decided to middle man all the nice new greens. So I spent a few weeks trading the new greens (700-900k worth), materials and stuff from FoW. It took 2 weeks/3 weekends and I got to a million. Later I got lucky and traded for some nice Chaos Axes before they dropped in price and made another 800k+. During this time this guy was buying up iron for factions and i thought that steel would be a better investment. I picked up steel for 75 -90 gold each and made 900k+ off of that.
Now I have several million worth of gold, weopons and materials and I'm trying to figure out if I should invest it or just sit on it till prices drop on the things I want. I don't trust the weopons market because of ANET. I figured ANET did this to get people to move on to factions if they wanted the rare elite items since those HoH greens had "Godly" stats and everyone had them. Then ANET increased the drop rate of good mods, devaluing existing weopons even more.
Ectos, Shards have dropped in price and might not go back up. Rubies and Sapphires haven't jumped. I'm down to a few hundred steel which I might keep for armor and stuff, but that is no biggie. Those CE dragons should be in abundance if a fair percentage of CE's are bought. So I see nothing worth investing in, but I will need room for all the junk im currently collecting/selling.
Any chance ANET will be raising the amount of gold an account can hold? If its bad for me, I can only imagine what it's like for those people with stacks and stacks of ectos.

it surely is bad for you, you are a millionmare that cant buy anything else! Invest in plant fibers, dont worry one of the future chapters they may be as valuable as ecto!
No really man, you dont need money just play the game hell donate some! Maybe to me! It makes you feel good when you donate to me *snickers* Just buy some more good rare weapons since you can and sell more materials, because you can

thats a tough question. with all the new gold sinks, i wouldnt be surprised to see prices for almost everything to go down. rare materials and dyes and everything will always be in demand, but how much something is worth depends on how much gold people are willing or able to pay for it.
unique items are pretty cool, like the minipets. but you can only carry a limited amount of those
the only real safe investment is gold and platinum - a million gold may be worth more in half a years time than it is now.

anyway, common materials are probably the best thing to invest in. 2 or 3 stacks of each material would be enough to cover all of your bases in case the price of something suddenly jumps.
Amber and Jadeite will probably devalue over time, but it's could be something else to occupy your time with.
dyes are not a very good investment, in my opinion. nothing but silver and black dyes are ever worth anything above 500g. more like chump change than anything. black dye will probably increase in value, since it's viewed as "uber l33t".
i'm no market analyst, and if you followed my advice, there's probably a large chance that you'd lose some thousands....but hey, investment isn't always without risks.
