The fruits of NCSoft's purchase of ArenaNet are finally coming to...

NCSoft sure has a thing for popping out MMOs.
Let's hope that Aion's engine really is different than Guild Wars, at least when it comes to the pathfinding and crazy invisible safety rails.

I've wanted a sci-fi version of GW for quite a while now.

Some of the other games games look pretty cool. I don't mind a PnP as long as I get to be unique. As miuch as I like GW, I am getting tired of seeing twins.
The name is interersting, from Greek Aion ir Aeon: end of an age or time period. Most often used in the Bible to mean "the end of the world".
Some of tht animations look almost FF ish

The "in game" shot looks like NC Soft dipped DIRECTLY into the GW texture and shader archives.
Sendai
they may have borrowed some of gw the interface for the preview but the engine seems to have a Z-Axis.

When is this supposed to be released because the WoW expansion is slated to come out later this year, and I am willing to wager A LOT of people who are playing other MMO's are gonna quit and move to WoW. Lvl cap increase, 2 new races, and prolly other info that is out there but isn't completly confirmed yet. Gotta be careful when a company releases games now a days.

Oh. My. God. FALLOUT WOULD TOTALY OWN! I would *so* play it.

I got to play a little bit of AION at e3 and I have to say I was pretty impressed. Off the bat it caught my eye because the gui and some texturing was similar to GW, heck it was set-up right next to the Factions terminals. At a second glance and getting some hands on w/ it, it's definitely on a higher level. Don't get me wrong, GW is no slouch but AION felt a little more refined. IE. Little things like how the character pulls their weapons out of their sheaths.. the way the numbers pop up when you're attacking things.. the attack effects, etc.. The best way I can describe it is that it's a very clean game with wicked attention to detail.
I wish I could have sat there and created a char. from scratch and work my way up but alot of people were taking over the terminals. As a matter of fact I recall one woman was sitting there playing and she seemed really into the game... an hour and a half goes by and I walk back by the booth and she's still in the same spot. That says alot for a game where there's literally hundreds of other options.
Also the talk of the town seemed to be a game by Webzen called Huxley. It's a MMOFPS. The terminals were so crowded I didn't get a chance to give it a shot except for watching people playing it from 5 feet away.

The woman in this screenshot reminds me of one of the Envoys.
Hum.
Interesting-looking game, regardless.
I think Exteel looks cooler, though. ;D

Still its the lack of monthly fees which keeps me interested in playing overall, that and the gameplay. Have no real interest in another MMO, I already pay for Planetside. |
If this other game was being developed by ANET as well, that is when i would begin to be more concerned though.

come on guys look at this, this is no guild wars engine
look at those lighting, and shaders, ...
that looks more like lineage2 to me than it looks like guildwars...
btw alex already mentioned its a totally new developped engine specially for this game, so why would you still say its a copy of the guild wars engine....

Because a lot of the people here have been conditioned into assuming that anyone on the buisness end of online gaming is lying and trying to screw you over.
Alias_X
I will not be getting this. If it charges a monthly fee, I am just going to move on to WoW. I not only feel cheated, but also angry. There aren't many MMORPG's with a large amount of players, so making another one is a big deal.
World of Warcraft, here I come!
(after seeing this I won't buy another NCsoft product ever again. I was a little dissapointed with Factions, and now with games being spat out by them, what was Guild Wars? A test?)

Aion is not using the GW Engine.
Now someone mentioned they're using GW engine for maybe 3 games?
I hope Tabula Rasa isn't one of those "3 games" coz Tabula Rasa is definitely using its own engine.

Damnit. They steal my name, and now they are stealing my game.
I'ma open up a can of nerf on their asses. (and I've used this name since Starcraft back in the 90s, so booyah!)

That does look suspiciously like Guild Wars lol and the description about lead attack/offhand etc. sounds just like the new Assassin skill useage...

And so the new products started dipping into GW...

From a technical standpoint, AION looks to bring some nice visuals to the table. Using the Crytek Sandbox 1.0 Engine (Far Cry) the game will include a heat shimmering effect near the ground (based upon the locale and climate). Weapons are nicely detailed, and there appear to be normal maps. For an MMO, there is a fair amount of groundcover and lush greenery (taking advantage of Sandbox's ability to handle large numbers of objects). Materials have been given their own characteristics, meaning that if you walk thru terrain like marshland or shallow water, your character will slow down accordingly. NCsoft has assured us that system specs will be low, so all users can enjoy the lush visuals and effects. |

not to shit on anyone's riff, but it looks like Aion will be released in asia only

I would take a look at this game especially if "borrowed" any cool ideas from Legend of The Dragoons.

I doubt this is the exact same engine as Guild Wars.
Reasons.
-You can jump
-You can climb
-You can fly

Usually people do not like it because..
A team gets moved to new development..
B team takes over previous development..
Orignal product takes a hit in content as B team is smaller than A team and less likely to know the code inside out as well as A team does and therefore more bugs and slower fixes.
Not saying it's the case here.. but that's the usual state of play.

Whats the gameplay like? Game mechanics? Player interaction? World interaction?
I would be tempted to try this game, it certainly looks pretty enough, and a more MMORPG syle gameplay to GW is definatly appealing.
But if I am going to be paying per month to play this game it better be something special.
Community, player group interaction like Eve, or enviroment/world interaction like Wurm or Roma Victor is the kind of innovation you need to not only get players, but to survive over a fair period of time. Others behemoths like WoW will just crush your game due to the fact their communities are larger, and people are looking for communities within MMORPGS if the gameplay is non-existant.
So what is the deal here? Whats the actual GAME like when played? What can be done in it? These are the real questions.
GW apparently was developed by a team who left Blizzard, or so a rumour I read goes, if they are now developing an MMORPG using concepts from GW, a more polished and stylish version of WoW is a possibility, and to be honest imo is a certain failure in the long run.
Developers need to start exploiting the possibilities within persisant mega multiplayer worlds, rather than exploiting players desires for these things. In short more WoW clones / more of the same is not only to be boycotted but condemned furiously.

What a pay-to-play needs in order to make me pay again:
-Mature combat system that gives group players an advantage (hate solo online)
-real housing
-real crafting jobs
-great interaction with the game world
-muchos content, pay-to-repeat is not an option
Games i played suiting this description:
Ultima Online - It comes very close, Roleplay Freeshards can make of the game so much more then it is, thanks emulators!
Star Wars Galaxy - The engine came close to UO in sheer posibilitys what to do in the game. That was before they invented the word "starwarsy".
Games i played and left because it was fast dull:
WoW
CoH/CoV
DDO
EvE
MMORPG seem to degrade, giving players less and less while costing same or more.
@aion
I like the flying.. looks cute.

"Enjoy an interactive and cinematic game experience like no other, powered by the cutting-edge Crytek® game engine" -- straight from their website. There ya go people, it's not the GW engine, even if the screenshot looks very much like it.
I must say the graphics are pretty cool, and the whole flying bit is pretty awesome. Too bad I'm such a GW fanboy :P and I won't pay for a game again and again and again after I buy it.

Why would they go to the trouble of licensing an engine previously used and developed for FarCry but turn around and make the game so stunningly close to that of Guild Wars? So rather than, you know, develop their own engine they will purchase one and dip into the honeypot of GW textures and interface design?
Colour me not impressed.

I'd say check out Second Life. It's like multiplayer first person TheSims.

Gotta agree with Yojinj's list over what an MMO should feature.
I really loved SWG. Paying the monthly fee was no problem for me, because I'm a die-hard SW fan, and I like computer games. Loved the possibilities with professions, character creation, player housing etc. Then the combat upgrade hit...I'm still really pissed about that one. *shakes fist @ SOE*
Anyways, @ Aion: At first sight, it looked like a genuine GW clone. However, there's supposed to be a z-axis in this game, and when you get a closer look, you see how much better the graphics are. Might consider getting it!

Some of you don't seem to understand that NCSoft is a publisher, they don't make the games, they only make them available in stores.
As for the 'rumor' that gw was created by people from blizzard, that's not really a rumor, that's truth, check the arena.net website - Mike O'Brien, Patrick Wyatt and Jeff Strain were top dogs at Blizz, till the company decided to make WoW.
I don't see blizzard growing much now, seeing as how all the top talent went off to other companys. The only thing they have now (in my eyes) is the film department. Don't get me wrong, blizzard has alot of money and I don't see them fading away, but I don't see them coming out with another starcraft (story wise that is).

I don't think they are going to stop making GW. Aion is just another game they are adding to their line-up. No need to get angered by this.
