It's possible to lvl your minions, fiends, etc. It could've been done in this way or it could've been +1 death magic items.

Leveling minions?? that would be crazy, yet really cool and much more better considering the 10 minion limit.

You can get Blessing of Grenth from statue (+1 to all necro attributes) and have a +1 death magic focus 20% and get a lvl 30 Fleshy 1/5 of the time.

Not true Akasukin the max is 29 30 is impossible and yes i did use a grenths blessing and ofcourse a +1 death magic focus but it only brings it on lvl 29.
