I never bothered doing all the Sorrow's Furnace quests.. But I've always wondered? What is that thing, and if you get to fight it. Excuse me for my noobness.

Next time, ask in Q&A rather than Riverside; it's the Iron Forgeman, and you don't ever directly fight it, although he does fight you. You kill the Stone Summit that are controlling it in the final mission.
