Well with the introduction of the Blackmoa, I had to go ahead and cap it and test it for a while. There was one thing on my mind that troubled me. If the pet was level 20 to start, could it evolve to Dire/Hearty/Elder? Is it already evolved but the name doesn't show it? I need someone to help test this by continuing to use the Black Moabird to see if it evolves. If mine evolves before any discoveries are made, I will post my results here. Also, I think it could be beneficial to test the damage and ability to take damage of the pet. It could have Hearty/Dire/Elder built into it.

Thanks and good luck with your tests.

By the way: The pet is found and obtained by doing a quest that can be found in HzH. I am unfamiliar with the name of the quest and the zone that the bird is located.

Quest: Beak of Darkness
Location: Ferndale
Note: You can cap it everytime you go out into Ferndale after you've beaten the quest.

So far, I've heard that the Black Moa counts as Un-evolved, meaning it'll be the worst pet, stat-wise, or it is equal to an Elder Moa, which means... its just another Elder pet.

Elder is not the worst evolution "stat-wise". It's the balanced evolution right? So it might be the worst in realistic situations, but certainly not stat-wise.

I haven't gotten my paws on a Black Moa yet (had one in the FPE for what that's worth. >.< ), but for those of you who do have them, it should be a relatively simple task to test which evolution your Moa is at. Take it to a quiet little swamp somewhere (plenty of those back in Tyria, if there are no nice ones in Cantha) and time how long it takes to die from just the poison's degen (meaning there are no enemies to interfere). Calculate out it's health, and you should be able to tell what evolution your pet is. It usually requires doing the timing several times and then averaging them together, to help reduce human error.

Once people start testing their Moas, I'll be curious to see if they all come back Elder, or if we are seeing a range across all three evolutions.

I said:

Black Moa may count as "Unevolved", meaning not aggresive, not playful, not dire, not hearty, not elder. This means that it does not receive the +2 Damage and Elder pet receives, or the +3 -60 HP a dire one receives, or the +1 +60 HP the Hearty one receives.

This automatically puts the Black Moa as the worst pet stat-wise, because it does not gain any extra damage, or HP.

However, there are other theories that say that the Black Moa is equal to an Elder Moa, which means, its just the same as every other Elder pet.

So the question shouldn't be whether the Black Moa is unevolved or Elder, but whether it appears only in unevolved/Elder (whichever you prefer to call it, since they're the same thing) or if it comes in all three flavors.
