If you want the "best"...

You'll want atleast 1 Ascalon armor for the "Reduces Damage from Attack" mod
(Only get the effect of one armor, even if you wear all five).

Then it's a choice of two sets after that:

Platemail for the high defense.

-or-

Gladiator for the energy bonus.

Lastly, if you use a hammer and knockdown a lot, you could pick up the Stonefist Gauntlets to lengthen the knockdowns.

Full Gladiator's with Knight's Boots, Stoneskin Gauntlets optional.
