Salvaging items: prefix first?

I searched for information about this, but its still unclear:

When I salvage items with both a prefix and a suffix, I seem to get always the prefix, and never the suffix. Does it work that way? Or are you randomly getting either the prefix or the suffix?

Random on everything, either prefix, suffix, or crafting material.

Ya its random...Lost out on a 5/-1 vampiric bow string because of it >.<

Ahhh, ok. Makes the decission to salvage a little harder!

Once you know the values of the mods and the materials, you'll know what to do every time.

You'll always get the crappy mod not the good mod....
Got zealous instead of 20/20 sundering..........

How could you have a weapon that was both zealous and sundering? They are both prefixes.
