But lately I have embarked on getting that title for an ele, and it becomes quite apparent after a few quick deaths that eles are genuinely not meant for running. So.. has anyone managed to clear the whole map literally by clearing the whole map of mobs?
Difficulty of getting Grandmaster Cartographer by class?
generik
First off I have to say that it is really a no-brainer to get grandmaster cartographer for a ranger or a warrior

Um, yea. At least before they nerfed us.
that red guy
I myself have not but my guildy Lady Erighan who uses an ele is at 90 something percent of the tyrian map
but did you really need to make a mad dash into a mob to find out that running with a ele is hard, but I will recomend some teammates like Lina Little Thom Cynn and Devona. With some patiance they will go anywhere for you and not complain that your going in the totaly wrong direction for the quest, or question your reasoning for needing all of the map uncovered.
And I think its hard for any class to get 100% of the map uncovered

e/mo. enchanting modified weapon. healing breeze. kinetic armor, burning speed. try it out.

my ele is at 86% with more than half of the southern shiverpeaks left to go

Earth buffs + Windborne Speed? Maybe E/Me Distortion?

I always kill all the mobs no matter what character I am playing...and I have been taking henchies for most of it (not ascalon...)...my monk is almost done, my ele and necro are over 80%, my mesmer is having the toughest time--even in ascalon, but sometime I will complete at least 90% with them all.....
it will take me time to want to repeat this mindless task 4 times.....so my monk will get the title and the others will have to wait.

if you cant run it, like in ice dome - just fight your way. its the only other way.
i fought with a warrior in ice dome to uncover it, you can't run into a mass of stone summit + heretics + giant herder + ice golems.
every class can get 100%, its just maybe more time consuming for an ele if he wants to run most of the time.
edit: oh and the first person i saw with 100%, was a Mesmer. Mesmer in rpg side with 100% map?? i RESPECT YOU.

Ive seen an ele and monk with 100%, i'd say its harder for an ele than a mes, fastcasting on the mesmer has uses, energy storage isnt much use when your running, other than that its purely down to secondary skills.

Yah, it’s definitely hard for an ele, but it’s not impossible so keep at it!
As for having to clear the mobs, there are some areas you can run with the right build and the use of henchies as a distraction for mobs. There are also some areas you have to run like the end of THK. For the most part you do have to try to kill all the mobs in your way.
In the end, I’ve had -60dp so often that it was strange to go into a town and see it missing. >_<

On the subject of other classes getting the title, I went back to kill Shiro again last night in order to buy the 15K armour, and I saw a Mesmer with 100%! Now THAT deserves some respect I think. Not only did they get the entire Tyria map, but they have finished Factions playing the class that is without doubt the hardest to get into any PUG with.

My Ele is on 93.6% at the moment.
I have had to fight my way through all of the higher level areas - such as the bit inbetween Beacons Perch and Camp Rankor, and other various areas of Southern Shiverpeaks. And yes, you get 60% DP quite often x.x
Still got a bit to clear in a a few missions, hopefully i'll have at least Master Cartographer by tommorow! ^^

It's actually pretty easy, just requires alot of patience and much cursing of henches. I went through the whole thing using a signet smiting build without too much bother, though ice golems did wind me up something special

generik
I managed to get both my ele and monk today to 60%.. let's just say I really don't enjoy healing henchmen while they kill the mobs slowly, whereas I could have just nuked them all using my ele with meteor shower

Fenrir
I agree about healing the henches, that's why I went smiting with my monk instead. You would be surprised just how effective it is, plus it's ALOT more fun than healing those eejits.
generik
But aren't smites skills useless in PvE due to the AOE nerf?
Any good PvE usable skills that you'd recommend? I definitely enjoy my ele more currently. GoR meteor shower > anything that the henchies can throw out :/

I almost never run with my ranger, because I'm taking my time, and by fighting my way through, I see and explore some things I've never seen before.
My favorite bit of the exploring was getting into the western area of The Falls, the waterfalls alone are worth making the trip for.

The region that I am going to dread the most would be the drox run stretch by far.. intend to leave it for last, but still contemplating how I will ultimately have to clear that whole lot by hench power alone.

You just need an attitude adjustment dude. My elementalist has
always gone with a smile, where my warrior has feared to tread.
Running is not the only way to play the game.

With my Me/x, I've just been grabbing henchies and fighting my way through everything. The places where time can't be wasted (Dunes, THK, etc.) I've ignored fighting, but that's about it.
I'm at 98.3% and there's only one or 2 little spots that I can see that I haven't gotten to (maybe .2 or .3%) So I'm going nuts trying to figure out where I've missed! I double checked a couple areas yesterday and to my surprise (and dismay), even though I know I had been there, I'd get a tiny bit (.1%) more. Then I wen't and cleared out the long route on the RoF mission (I've always gone through the front gate) and thought the would be worth .2 or .3%, and only got .1! I also cleared out the little area west of where you fight undead Rurik, my total went nowhere!
*end venting*
For all of you grandmasters - congrats!
The question I have is: Am I going to be able to reach 100% without the combat areas in the Ascalon / Yaks arenas and without the old arenas uncovered?

94.5% atm on mesmer, definitely easier on warrior because they can solo through many areas just by pure force, where hench fail.

Actually an ele might be better suited to getting the title.
Achieving grandmaster is an isepid task of spider crawling on just about every wall you can find.
As I was doing it with my ranger, I started out doing running builds just about everywhere. But often found I had to switch to a fighting build to get most of it.
It is a mix of running and fighting that you will have to do. Running alone will not get it all done, imo. You will run into too many places where you have to get right up to an edge and spend a lot of time in crevices while trying to avoid mobs. It is much easier to just clear the mob and then move on and take your time to make sure you have fully explored.
I started out wanting to do this on my ele since he was my first character, but then switched to my ranger as he had more opened and could be more successful running. I wound up doubling back over previously explored areas a number of times having to fight just to finish it up to 100%.
I will not be attempting this on another character now that I have it done.
Just knowing where you are going and the types of mobs will determine if you should mainly fight or run. Just mix and match and you can get it done

You can explore the tar river in Old Ascalon - reveals a good portion near the arena fight.

Ya, getting 100% with an ele is difficult as I should know. My ele is currently at 89.2%, getting there!
Dweia
My ele had 100% when the titles went in. Then again, I am a ninja at wall hugging. She now also has 90% for Cantha.

Well i got 100% of Tyria map done (nutty i know) so if u wanna run just changed your secondary pro to ranger (El/Ranger). If not i remember sacrificing my hench group a lot in Lornars pass. Most places i fought through, it takes patience. Yes those Frost Imps up in Mineral Springs north east they got me like 10 times as i went a little berserk there.

After the preview Nightfall weekend I started to go for the canthan title. I had set my monk to monk class only during nightfall weekend (I find it cool looking) and didn't get a second class again since then. Got the grandmaster title yesterday and I did notice I had to use a different style compared when I was mo/ra when I got the Tyrian title. I died more and I had to fight and clean some areas. There can be many other causes for this like the difference in areas etc. but it's just the impression I have.
UBS
Took me around 2 hours to clear the whole droks run, and completely uncover it on my monk.
I did it with henchies^^ Also capped FoC xD

Sorry if this is off topic slightly...I'm reading this topic, and it's real nice ppl saying 'i got 60%' and happy with it, 'i saw a mes and he got 100% i respect him'...rather than ppl always 'bringing down' ppl's achievements...It's nice to see that ppl are still pleased with 60%, mes completing game, ele getting 100%, etc...Not everything is always about getting the max
Moiax
I find it easier to just hench it. I cleared snake dance with my warrior, mostly becasue I wanted to cap earthshaker, but it took awhile and I had 60dp untill I capped, but it was worth it. It actually feels good to have cleared a place like that out.

Running for cartography is overrated anyway, you'll never get 100% if you run everywhere as most of the time you'll be going back to places you already ran to get the bits you inevitably missed. Stick to clearing places out.
Regarding 'respect' for the title, I respect anyone who has made it from 95% to 100%, as I know how much of a pain in the arse it is to achieve. Yes, even with photoshop.

My wammo Grim usually pick up percentage by going to random places with henchies or friends. Currently i'm 77.9% in Tyria and 68% in Cantha.
S_Serpent
An elementalist as primary char here too, and I'm almost at 95% at Tyria and 94% at Cantha. So I know its not easy, but it really feels rewarding to know you almost uncovered every thing on the map
Jackylicious
Didn't find it any harder with my ele than any other class. In fact easier at times. I map as I play the game so everything dies and no running regardless of class.
CorstedPirate
I have been working on the Cartographer titles with my monk. My monk is my main character, so she must have them done. I'm up to 91.8% or Tyria and 98.9% of Cantha. Healing through everything with henchies where I can and guildies who are also obsessed where I can't. It is often very annoying and sometimes takes ages to get a small section cleared. I don't use running skills at all for mapping. It took me a couple tries yesturday to get the area where Sunreach is done, since I was using henchies and he surprised me! It is good to have guildies who are dying to get KOABD as much as I am, I can ask them for help if I get really desparate.
We are cheapskates too, so paying for a title even as cool looking as incorgable ale hound is considered a bit of a waste in my guild. One of my guildies recently got his skill hunter title as maxed as he can get it too. I'm in a bit of a race with him to get the Cartographer titles done and then on to KOABD!

Necrotic Traversal comes in handy

Trinity Entragian
Completed Tyrian GM Cart a week or so ago with my E/Mo...already had 90% or so when titles came out, but I'm lazy, so it took a while to get motivated to finish it.
Used henchies for pretty much all of the last 10%, no 'running' - my legs are too short - and no special builds..except for that one place.
Not the hardest thing in the world to do, but has to rank in the top ten most tedious.
And yes, necrotic traversal is very handy..got me my last .1%
