No Monthly Charge...ya BS, Read

@ the OP,
You obviously didn't do the math very well yourself because there are alot of variables to take into account here.
No one NEEDS the collectors edition, so the additional cost of buying that either instead of or in addition to the normal game is not what should be taken into account. No one NEEDS a particle effect on their character during emotes, no one NEEDS a minirature dragon hovering around them. To play guild wars all one NEEDS is either a copy of Prophecies or a copy of Factions or both. Notice I said or, not and. You are arguing that to continue to play Guild Wars, one must buy every chapter. I've got news for you... As long as ANet's servers are up, you don't pay a dime aside from purchasing whatever chapters you CHOOSE to buy. Also don't forget that other MMO's tend to cost around $50 upon launch as well, and that only includes one month of play. Lets do the math here.
Generic MMO
Purchase=$50
First month=free
Next 11 months = roughly $12 a month on average.
Total cost for first year = $182
Guild Wars
Purchase = $50
First month=free
Next 11 Months = free
Total cost for first year = $50
Just about any other MMO is roughly more than TRIPLE what it costs to play Guild Wars.
So quit whining about the cost, if you think its too expensive, quit buying the additional chapters you don't NEED them.

I had a few people at E3 ask about the release schedule, thinking we were going to have 6-month development cycles. They expressed hesitation, even concerns, about what a dev team could produce in that amount of time. It was good to be able to explain that the devs have been hard at work on C3 for many months, and are, with the release of Factions, investing resources into C4 even now. These are full teams with an overview from several central team members to maintain continuity and a continued vision of the direction of Guild Wars. |

There's two dev teams at ArenaNet working on staggered 12 month schedules to give the 6 monthly release windows, as mentioned. C3 was started back in November, and is already advancing quite well. |

Hey OP, how do you figure they should make the money they need so that they can keep developing their product? Personally, I would like Honda to upgrade my car for free annually as well if you can manage to get companies to start creating upgrades and expansions at no cost...

Hmmm
If I create a rit or sin going to C1 gets me.. different stat armor.. no, skills I can capture (rit or sin).. no, more unique items for my rit or sin profession that's not in cantha.. no.
If I create a C2 "core" class. Do I get less skills (number) to choose from then a C1 only chracter ... no.
Some of my skill are different from C1 only but they have there unique set that's different from what I have so we each have strength's and weakness that balance out.
And if you own all the games, just like magic the gathering you have the most avaible to you but it's the same in magic, you CAN play with having the current mtg core + 2 "current" mtg expansion per year and be competive.
But if I have many sets from mtg, you have more options.
GW:F operates as a complete stand alone game.

I have so many ways to point out how retarded the OP is, but everyone's already taken them! FTW!

Guild Wars chapters are more like sequels rather than expansions. They allow you to use your old characters, but you are playing a totaly new region.
New additions arn't free, and they never said they would be, they said there would be no cost for online gameplay, and that is what we have had all along. You never need to buy anything more then the game you begin with to continue playing it as long as you want. If you choose to buy more chapters, than your paying for a new game, same engine, but it is not an expansions which requires the original game to function, it is a stand alone product.
Granted, most players have already payed in for the original product, and they are just getting expanded content, in which case, 50 dollars is a significant cost, even though the game functions alone, we are only updating our game. It would be nice if they had a reduced cost version, or a rebate for players who are simply adding new chapters to the game they already have.
But in comparison to most online RPGs. They either charge you large amounts for the "online service" along with expansion retail, or they are simple games which don't realy grow much, and only get 1 or 2 expansions. GW gives you free online service for your game, not free content, this is a buisiness not a charity. And wile the added chapters may be a bit pricy, Anet is making large content additions to the game on a regular basis, their profit model revolves around creating new content for us to play on a regular basis, which we would and should pay for, instead of riding out monthly fees for income and throwing in expansions only as neccessary to keep players playing and paying.
I would like to upgrade my versions to CE edition too, signature dances and minature Kuunavang is realy nice, and I realy hope they do make an upgrade version available, but ever how inconvenient it may be, Anet has continued to keep their word, there is no Online Service fee, and your disapproval of their optional additions doesn't prove that there is monthly fee, this post is purly slander.

As it was mentioned above, there's nothing new in ANet releasing new chapters at a price
I knew it ever since when I started ~year ago when me and my buddies were wondering wtf are they doing by releasing "free" games, and read up on the $$$ expansions coming frequently...

OMFG A COMPANY WANTS TO MAKE MONEY!!!
What is the world coming to!
Seriously tho, i'm pretty sure you're not the first person to come to this conclusion. Look at it this way, Madden comes out every year, but you still buy it, OMG EA IS CHARGING MONTHLY FEE FOR MADDEN is what you sound like. You're being forced to buy the new madden every year b/c of new content, the difference here being, you can use more of the old gw than the old maddens with each new iteration. See where this is going? Anet is not charging you monthly, the game is yours forever as long as the servers are rurnning, and I can only assume on private servers after that.
EDIT: i post slow

You don't have to purchase Expansion Packs. You choose to buy them.

Lets not forget the opportunity cost of playing your free content GW game... You then don't have time to go out and spend money and go broke more than paying for the cost of the game every WEEK!

Hahaa, you guys pounded the OP pretty well that I'm starting to feel sorry for him, only a tiny bit though...
Just wanted to point out that a majority of existing games (1 players) only lasts for 20-40 hours of gameplay, and you pay the same $40-50 on release. So we're not going to play the same game for a year, doing the same things, of course we're going to play other games.
These kind of complaints that stretches things totally out of context are such a good laugh.

The benefit to the chapters being released every 6 months instead of paying a monthly fee is that if you don't want to buy a chapter, you don't have to. You could even take a 6 month break, come back and everything is fine. With WoW, you either have to pay every month for those 6 months or loose your characters.
Not to mention the whole "realm" problems with other MMOs. Say you get a character up to level 60 in WoW while playing on Realm "A", later you find a guild that you really want to play with on Realm "B". You can't move your character over, you have to start a new character at Level 0 in Realm "B." This is a common problem in many MMOs, I'm not picking on WoW.

Isn't the "6-month expansion release cycle" kind of integral to Anet's entire business model? The OP feels slighted because they are following through with the plan that their company was based on?

MCS's red engine is going! wooooooo
As for gaming.. seriously if you have a decent job, you can pay for these game months after months... I know it seem to be a bad business plan but for a game that don't charge you to play online. I think its the only way they can make profit.
Going off-topic a bit.. PS3 for $600 dollars i mean who the hell are you to charge us $600 dollars for a half-way decent computer/entertainment machine. But i know those fan-boys will get the PS3 on the launch day. Like me

I love it when people try to break down the cost of this game into a monthly fee.
First off your math is seriously wrong.
I am sure you meant to say "GW+GWF= $107, for 18 months of game since GW lasted for a year itself before GWF came out and the next one isnt going to be out for (suposedly) 6 months.
And to finish off the subject...
Lets say I bought GW only.
GW=$50.00 for 1 year = $4.16 a month
18 months= $2.78 a month
2 years= $2.08 a month
Then i buy the fourth expansion for lets say $50.
I play that for 1 year so now my "monthly fee' would be $5.55
Not as bad as it seems now is it?
The point is that there are too many variables to actually break down the cost per month like what if you dont play for 6 months? Do you count those months when you figure the costs?
One other thing that bugged me about the original post.
Tell this to the MS flight sim community. There is NEVER an expansion released for any MS flight sim and they are released usually about 2 years apart. These guys are die hard about "sitn around doing the same thing", I should know, I am one of them!

Screw Blue Ray,

If this is another one of those posts that say that the new chatpers are the equivalent of a monthly fee then I'll give you the standard answer:
X amount of calculation
Result: GW is still cheaper
