We lost the first game partially because we got outplayed, and partially due to bad luck. For bad luck, five catapult fires on their NPCs yields but a single archer. The catapult can be such a strong weapon at VoD but the fact that it randomly screws you sometimes drives me nuts.
As for being outplayed, it goes something like this - shortly after VoD hits we get the 'guild lord under attack' message. We have a couple guys on their catapult, and the rest of our team at their side gate. No one's in position to respond. Panic, everyone pulls back. Their NPCs and some of their players wipe out our catapult team while we're heading back, putting us down at a really, really bad time. We're pulled back into our base, and we don't have enough people out to try and hold the stand with the NPCs, so they wipe out ours and gain control.
I think the game would have been winnable, although uphill from there, but we got sloppy and took unneccessary deaths from their NPCs, and that was that.
Game two we got hammered by an awful miscalculation - our plan was to use Gale to interrupt their Ritualist's spirits, but we didn't realize they would bring in Ward of Stability in response to our thumpers. That put us at a huge build disadvantage that we couldn't wiggle out of.
