My Ranger is going to keep his Hearty Melandru's Stalker, thank you! I love my Melandru's Stalker!
But my new Assassin wanted a pet for PvE in Archer mode, and he is a lazy sod who didn't want to work to fully level up a pet, so ...
1. First I tried the Dire Tiger. You can skill cap Level 15 Dire Tigers outside Boreas Seabed in Pongmei Valley. First, practice running to the Yeti area without getting into combat, because the Yeti's tame the level 15 dire tigers quickly. But sometimes they miss one. After seven tries I found one free and made a taming suicide charge for it. Got it. However, the Dire Tiger at level 20simply took too much damage in PvE and used too much of my mana for keeping it alive.
2. So, I decided to try capturing one of the level 20 Elder Blue Reef Lurkers you can get at the beginning of the Boreas Seabed Mission. The first group you encounter has them, though there may be others I did not find. When the first group came out, they were already tamed, so I thought I could not tame those.
Restarting the mission, as soon as the gate opened, I went to the left and across the bridge, catching the first group of contestants inside their little retreat and their gate stayed shut. I could see both reef lurkers were tamed already, but gunned down the group for fun anyway. The reef lurkers marked in red and hostile were chattering away at the end. Now comes the strange part.
I decided to try the charm spell for fun and grins. But the henchies killed it through the fence before I could get an error message, but the spell was running which I thought strange. So, I walked over to the right a bit, then back so the henchies could not attack through the fence. I had brought as few casters as I could. The charm spell worked on the second Elder Blue Reef Lurker and he became my pet!
I didn't know you could charm an already charmed pet, nor did I know you could charm anything that was in red and hostile. But it worked! Now my assassin has a Level 20 Elder Reef Lurker. Much sturdier than the Dire Tiger.
The Lurker is nifty, but in the end I may end up with the Elder White Tiger, level 15, you can cap near Whatsisname FurFriend in Melandru's Hope. Guildie of mine just got one of those.
