Kakumei, some of the winners are the work of the players' young children.

Okay. I'm glad young kids want to get in on it. Good for them. Let them even be featured on the site.

If their work is like that pictured above, however, there is no way they should be put into the game itself.

I really can't wait to see them ingame. I can't decide which one I like best.

Those are all really cool and the beaver gave me a laugh.

EDIT: So I've been looking again at the capes, and the beaver is seriously my favorite. It's just so darn funny!! I wouldn't be at all suprised if it becomes extremely popular. Seriously, that is just a wicked design, kudos to whoever drew it.

Most of them are really nice... espeically the turlte and phoenix ones.
However, alot ranged from mediocore to plainly bad (beaver). Makes people who actually spend some work but didn't get selected angry. I am not accusing anyone and not being bitter... but some of those design looks like they are traced from some very genric pictures you can find anywhere online...

We tried really hard to not accept clip art or traced images. It's about impossible to know that something is original, but we do try. I even had the art team members in the early judging pull out a couple and suggest that they were most probably not the real deal, so out they went, and in went others instead.

The Art Team of ArenaNet has a great sense of art, and a wry sense of humour! (Hence the beaver.) But beyond that, the entire team was invited to join in the judging, and many did. It's not a matter of "expert art" but just instinct about how something will look on a cape, how much you'd like to use it, how subjectively beautiful/heroic/fun it is. The issue with some, as you could tell, was that there were several that had the same theme, and we did not want to qualify one as the one, but rather acknowledge all of those on a similar theme as creators of a good concept. (We are actually adding two more tomorrow, for in our searches through files this afternoon, I found another excellent "Asian Archway/Architecture" image, and another "yin yang fish" image, and those artists will be recognized, as well.)

Don't forget -- these are just concepts and our art team will make the final emblem.

I make no apologies for the beaver. I boldly predict that you'll see that little critter on a panoply of guild capes in the near future. 'Sides that, who doesn't enjoy a good chuckle!

As to the creator of the stunning pencil-drawn unicorn image, I have it on my wall in pride of place. Although it wasn't a choice for a guild cape, it's a great drawing, and I will send that artist a special note and a gift.

I am really really surprised to see them accepting even MORE phoenix... now there are going to be 4 phoenix emblems? If I do a good phoenix next time, am I going to be a winner too? lol

Edit: oops, forgot to count the oldest one... make that 5 phoenix emblems.

Makes me wish you had too. That's nicer than several of the winning entries.

I don't mind the beaver, but I don't think joke emblems have a place in the game.

Oh Noes! The 'burbs!

I don't think the beaver should have won, if they were judging solely on artistic merit. Several of the honorable mentions were far better. If I had thought they might judge on whimsy, I would have whipped something up myself. It would have been a lot more amusing than a poorly drawn beaver too. lol

As it's concept it doesnt matter how badly drawn the subissions is. I also think it's unfair to berate someone who could be a young child soley because he can't draw like Leonardo Da Vinci.

My personal favourites were honorable mentions;

I believe games should always have some small element of comedy (have you read some of the quest overviews in Cantha?)

I wouldn't mind sporting that beaver, it would at least be more original than all the tattered black capes with gray flames and a silver skull/bat on them.

I figured the beaver would be brought up in this thread. I do think it's one of the "joke" emblems that they have in there simply to make us laugh. If I saw a great guild win championship with a big cuddley beaver on their cape, I would probably be laughing about it for a while.

Not to mention the humor is countered with a lot of really just plain badass winners.

not as much berating a young child but its a hell of a slap in the face to anyone who entered the competition and put time and effort in (dont worry i didnt enter) when quite frankly tat like that gets put forward and chosen above others.
im all for comedy emblems but come on, someone might as well just crayoned 'WOW sux, we luvs gild worz'

heaven forbid we let guilds have some fun cape options!!!!
We should all have red and black tattered capes with the skull or spider and the flame pattern!

How do you know for certain that they didn't choose the winners and throw in the beaver as a bonus? Did the contest state exactly how many winners there would be?

My only concern is how many guilds go with.... adult humor beaver related names... not that it bothers me, but it will just get old really fast.

I agree, that beaver had better be a joke. I would much rather see these two get added from the Honorable Mentions:

At least the beer one was decently drawn, and it has at least some refrence to the game (Dwarves and their Dwarven Ales)... Do honorable mentions get theirs in-game as well? I hope so, because some of them are much better then the winners. I rather have the honorable mentions then 2 of almost the *same* thing.(or 3 as Gaile said about the Ying yang fish...)

Oh, and will they add more details/backgrounds? Even just a few would make the capes nicer .
