Yes this is a question..
This is not meant to degrade or insult the "artist" but guys... please tell me, how did Lawrence Hawkins, USA, win the guild emblem contest? ?!?!?
That design looks like the mess my baby brother draws with the leftover food on his plate.. Seriously, is that meant to be a joke by Anet? I actually find a person who wins with a design like that quite insulting to other artists. Please answer my questions if you know anything about this or where i can find more info as to how the winners were chosen. His design can be seen here: http://www.guildwars.com/events/cont...em-winners.php
-Thanks.

It's a video game.
There are several winners; some very artistic and serious and others cute and cuddly.
Take a look at the current cape choices, not every one is a work of art or for serious artsy cape designers.
I predict that will be one of the most prevelant and prosperous designs within 6 months.

umm, no it is not "cute and cuddly". The lines arent even joined. It took the guy atleest 54 seconds to draw in microsoft paint. i mean comon. People who put a lot of effort and actually tried, coming up with clever designs and who actually took their time deserve to win. Not some idiot who enters a scribble as a joke... And yes, it probably will be popular, but for a laugh.
if you read that page, you will see that these are not the final designs that are going into the game. The artists at ArenaNet judged them on concept, not on quality. Basically, they like the idea, and general form of the drawing, they will then redo it to look much better and fit into the quality of Guild Wars.
The contest has never been based on artistic talent. You could have crayoned on a RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOtail napkin and had just as much chance to win as the person who put in 18 hours drawing an anatomically realistic flea design. The judging is purely subjective to what the Artist at Anet liked. Also it had to be able to look good on a cape so something the was intricate with a lot of fine lines just wouldn`t work while something basic resembling clip art workd perfectly. There`s a post out somewhere that Gaile explains some of this in, go look for it.
Got to love the swear filter.

Imagine how hard it is to draw a beaver in the first place. Then try to accomodate Anet's strict demand of it being bald so as to not offend all the hairy beaver lovers in the world. On top of that, you then have to make sure the beaver remains waterproof, even while bald.
A bald, wet beaver.... Soon to be on 75% of capes near you.

Mockery, maybe. Doubt it though.
