It seems a bit rubbish that in an Alliance all there is to communicate is the Alliance chat channel. Unless I've missed something there seems to be no way to tell who is online from any member guilds (apart from your own obviously)
I think it would be a very good idea to have some kind of "Alliance members" tab, which would show a list of all members of all the allied guilds and their status... grouped by Guild and rank
e.g.
Guild A
- Leader
thisguy online
- Officers
thatguy online
anotherguy away
- Members
yetanother online
Guild B
- Leader
thatmesmer away
- Members
thatwarrior online
Guild C
- Members
someperson online
anotherone online
and so forth. This would make it a lot easier to perhaps loan players across guilds and organise practices, cross Alliance events etc.
Allow Alliances to see who is online from each member guild

I asked Gaile Gray once when she was on. Her answer was that it was a nice idea but the list would be to long to store every single member's data or something.
Maybe they'll add it anyway, I was thinking of a something like the Log, where all Guilds are minimized to their names (like in the log, where you can minimize everything to just the place where the quests are) and when you click on the name, you get a list of the members in that Guild, who's on and who's been off line for x days etc.
Alliance chat for all would be nice too, so you don't have to whisper each individual member if he/she wants to help you out

Well, we sure do need something, don't we? I've had to do majorly brutal pruning of the friends' list lately because all of the guilds in our alliance keep growing. In an alliance of a potential 1,000 members, a friends' list of ... 50? is simply not adequate.
(Don't get me wrong, ANet! I love our alliance! But that one player who I had to prune was hurt when I didn't recognize them! Don't make me treat my alliance members this way!)

Perhaps a dropdown box to change which guild roster to view?

Well they've added Alliance chat available to all guild members but this still doesn't really address the problem of easily being able to tell who's around from the other guilds in the alliance.
Currently the only option is to say "hiya, anyone here?" in Alliance chat, and even then that's not all that helpful because people in the allied guilds might not reply/busy/have chat disabled/etc.
I'm really surprised why this hasn't been corrected, it should be a basic component of any multi-group organisation for people to know who's part of it from each member group....
I like the suggestions above about being able to click on member guilds and see their members that way.

I was first against the idea, I grow weary of hearing "Come on, come AvA with us, PLEASE" all day. And, every day I would say "No" or "No thanks" So I don't answer in Alliance chat, ever... "Shhh, I'm hiding" kinda thing.
Then one of the members from that guild was visiting our GH and added me to his friends list. Now I get tells in alliance chat knowing I am online. Work around for me was to just appear offline now.
So adding this feature would be a no issue for me now.

For those just wanting to be left alone, put yourself on dnd or offline.

If the data is too long, it should maybe say "13 out of 20 members are online. 3 out of 8 officers are online."
Just to know that somene is there would help
