Hydromancers, useable in PvE? PvP?

I've made and remade an Elementalist three or four times now, and every time I got kind of bored with them. This most recent time I've made a hydromancer and been quite happy with it, espeically with the Faction skills.

I've been wondering, though, what skills could make it really worth playing? I've been toying at the idea with the Air skills that care about water hexes... but the damage output isn't all the more comparable to some water spells.

Ideas, or are Hydromancers still crap?

Hydromancers aren't crap! They just aren't damage dealers!

Well, in PvP, they have a use.

This is the Water Ele I use in HoH. It's a Snare-Warder which works quite well in Balanced due to the presence of the other Fire MS/Rodgort ele.
I avoided Maelstrom due to its small radius, but it can be brought to distract the other team's monks off their wards.

Well, in PvP, they have a use. Not exactly Hydromancers in PvP though. If they went pure water then they'd be crap.

In PvE they're no use at all though tbh.

Hydromancers, if that's what we're calling water eles, are fine in both PvE and PvP, but for different reasons. In PvP, you should run a Water Ele/Necro and use mass hexes and snares to hold the other team still and reduce their effectiveness. The first team I ever took all the way to HA (from RA ... four elementalists!) featured me as a water hex mage (ele/nec). The others were spiking/interrupt (air/mes), nuking (fire) and warding (earth/monk) ... that's right, all four elements.

The key is to remember that you're not there for damage. Oh, and focus your wrath on their warriors!

As for PvE, water can actually be used to pressure spike in some areas, using dual attunements and ice spear for a continuous 74 damage (mitigated by armor, of course) against a single, preferably soft, target. Throw on blurred vision and Mist armor to keep from being ground down by warriors. Vapor Blade can also be added as a finisher or opener for the spike stream. Just don't do this is PvP.

That being said, you'll never be as good at spiking than other spike class builds in PvE, or as good at shut down as a mesmer (although you will shutdown more at once) in PvP.

Spamming slowdowns on Warriors is extremely annoying for Warriors(gets alot of pressure off), and the most scared Ele when 2 Warriors are rushing in your direction is definitely a Hydro, because you can just forget about kiting.
Splits are usually destroyed by Water Eles, because splits don't usually have enough hex removal to deal with Ice Spikes+Shard Storm+Deep Freeze.
Air Eles with a few points in Water and maybe 1-2 snares is extremely common, too.
