I've seen a lot of R/As lately, but only in alliance battles.

Is it just some gimmicky PvP FotM build, or is there a reason to go R/A in PvE?

I'm not seeing it. But I'm willing to suspect I've got a blind spot here.

Educate me.

i dont know the exact build per say but ranger/assassin can be effective due to ranger's primary attribute being expertise. one of the great things about expertise is that it lowers the cost of attack skills (in addition to other things as well). im guessing its similar to R/W stance tank builds that spam energy attacks like swift chop and cyclone axe. which would mean they are using skills like whirling defense to avoid damage, while they use dagger combos to do nice amounts of damage. my bro has an assassin and watching him he runs out of energy quite often, but if you think about it, having an expertise of 13 would reduce 5 energy skills to 2 energy (2.4 before being rounded down), get some zealous daggers and then you would have skills like repeating strike for only 1 energy.

Repeating Strike, 5 energy, 0 cooldown
Off-hand Attack
Must follow an off-hand attack. If it hits, this attack strikes for +5...+17 damage. If it misses, it takes an additional 15 seconds to recharge. obviously, you would have to use other skills as well like some of the basic combos assassins are running, but ill leave it at that, a +17 damage attack for virtually 1 energy is well worth it imo, especially when thats not even counting the damage from your main combo.

I have been doing R/A in PvE, and I came up with a couple shadowstepping trapper builds. I went into some detail about the builds in this thread. They are a lot of fun IMO.

Edit: I went ahead and wrote the builds up:
Teletrapper (PvE build)
Trapninja (Farm build)

R/A's can maintain longer combos used more often than a A/x. They can deliever several combos in a row, without feeling the strain on the energy bar.

*it costs an R/A with 14 exp a total of
10+4+2+2+6 = 22 - easily maintainable.

*it costs a A/X a total of
10+10+5+5+15 = 45. - hard to control.
Even with full energy armor etc, an assassin primary will burn 100% of his energy trying to pull this off. Sure, you may get a crit or two, but unless you do... GL succeeding with it.

There's also some crazy talk of Rangers having better armor or some nonsense. But, yeah, it's Expertise, for sure.

^^ That was true in the FPE, but Assassins now have 70 base, just like Rangers. (per guildwiki)

Thanks for the info. I think I'll cap AoD and try the ol' AoD spike out.

I would assume the same as on assassin.

I didn't get around to this last night (too busy doing E/A earth spike pwnage in AB) but it's the standard AoD -> GPS -> HotO -> FS -> TF sequence. Presumably your last 3 would be things like Viper's Defense, Shadow Refuge, maybe Return. Or you could throw whirling defense, dodge, zojun's haste...
