I'm getting ready to start farming UW with my 55 Invincimonk, but none of the guides seem to explain why i need a Smiting Staff to take down Dying Nightmares when doing 2-man UW runs.

If my Smiting Prayers is at 5 (which is what Tsunami Rain's guide said it should be at), i would need to find a max damage Smiting Staff that requires 5 in Smiting to use it effectively. Furthermore, i don't understand how 3-4 hits of a Smiting Staff can take down a Dying Nightmare. Is it because the staff should deal Holy damage or Light damage? Now i'm really confising myself!

Any help would be great

well if u are doing 2 man and u are the monk then u should have spell breaker( if not then u can capture this near war camp in the bit right aboce rankor camp when/if a nightmare coes up then your team mate should take them out for u cause it is his job but i think nightmares are really sensative to light/holy dmg cause they are necors

but they are also lev 18

hope this helps a lil bit

They are weak if I remember correctly. I play the necro of the team and I normally kill them for the monk.

there's nothing special about the smiting staff, go with a divine favor 20/20 if you must for the fast cast/recast on sb or a rod with 20/20 prot (as they have those these days at weapons crafters in the 15k faction armor cities). the nightmares are like level 15 and are incredibly weak. they're pretty much arenanet's little wink and giggle at monks who used to farm solo back in the day specifically to complicate that build...

(mmm. zealot's fire, balt's aura DIVINE BOON DIVINE BOON DIVINE BOON! those were the days)

it's easy for the monk to kill. on my monk, i'd prefer the necro stay out of any possible agro range regardless.

And always remember to CUSTOMIZE your max damage weapon of choice. The 20% extra dmg is very crucial when you want to get 2 hit kills on Nightmares.

...5 smiting won't make any difference... Most of the WANDS that you should be using are a **Divine Favor** req for damage. 55 questions should be posted in the million 55hp threads that there are.

It's the monks job to kill the nightmares. So if they tell you to kill it and you die doing that because you agro the attaxes then yes it IS their fault.

Thanks for all the responses,

I have a nice Max Dmg Holy Rod in my inventory that should work fine if the kind of staff/damage doesn't matter. I guess i'll give it a try!

its not the necro's job to kill nightmares. It's the monks job. I currently use a maxed divine favor wand to take it out. Smiting really doesn't matter down there in the UW. I just put whatever points that I have left over into it.
