How Much Help Do You (Newbies) Look For?

This is a bit of a turnaround from an earlier posted thread, which was basically asking veteran players of Guild Wars, how much do they help newbies? The general response ranges were:

I think, on average, the majority of veteran players may agree with a lot of this.
Now, let's turn this around a bit.
How much help do you (the newbies) expect from veteran players?
What do they think is acceptable, in terms of asking players for information or items?

When I started playing, it was enough if someone answered basic questions, and helped with quests (in terms of PUGs). I never wanted to be run from point A to point B (in my mind, that kind of defeated the purpose for playing the game!), and i wasn't in the habit of asking for gold (we've all had parents say, "How are you gonna learn the value of a buck if you don't earn it?")..
As far as leveling, I think you're somewhat cheated when you get power leveled (either that, or you lose a sense of achievement when you FINALLY get to level 20: "I FINALLY DID IT!!!").
So, for all the new players out there, how much help do you expect from others?

Well, I'm not a luminary and I'm not exactly fresh from the apple cart, but I do remember when I started playing and the only help I've ever actually asked for is a handful of 'how to' questions.

Most of what I know that I didn't earn on my own has come from this site.

None.

When I started playing at release virtually everyone was a noob.

Took me a week to even discover Grendich. Those were some good days....

Today everyone is a "leet pro", lots of elitism going around because of this mindset.

Ahh yeah that brings it all back to the day when it took a matter of weeks to get to lvl20 because the map was so huge and people didn't know or understand as much. Bliss.

When it comes to helping newbies, there's no harm in hand-outs, runs or advice, but itsa bonus and not a neccessity. The game provides adequate info and items for people to progress without the intervention of higher up players.

As a Newbie, I expected little to no help with missions and bonuses. But I did expect to be able to ask questions and get answers to them without any hassles.

As a newbie to Factions, I hesitate to ask questions because of the elitist B.S. mentioned by Generik - a sad commentary on the state of the game.

noobs in game seem to expect alot. If i see someone spamming something wrong or desperatly needing money (yea right) i usually will help them out. What gets on my nerves is when people go, "What armor is that" i always get asked what armor my 15k luxon is, so i answer that its 15k Luxon. Then they go on and on asking more questions like im the damn tech support. It really does get annoying, i wish people would figure things out themselves, its very irritating

none really cept for where is this and where is that question. i never got power-leveled, and only got ran when i already beaten the game and didnt feel like doing everything over again.

never expected gold!!! and i hate those who do, i still get a little tacked that a friend or guildmate would blatantly ask for gold instead of letting me offer if i had the extra funds.

in game edicit is the same as real life, u shouldnt ask excessively, when a person does help always say thank you.

and if u must beg, not in large quantities. Because i kick hobos in my free time

most things i can find out from forums and friends. its just that most people dont feel like shoving out what like $15 for the guide, so they figure lets just badger other peeps.
it would be nice to have a complete guide included or have them post it on the main site instead of having to find it on forums. this personally is my first forum that i have been active on, and i dont think it would have been if i wasnt forced to look for decent guide.

When I was a noobie, the only thing I wanted was answers. Heck, I would have been thrilled to death if someone had pointed me to these forums. Sadly no one did, and I had to learn on my own. As a Factions noobie, I expect nothing, but am grateful when I receive help. Just today some kind person loaned me 50g to access my storage. He/she got 100g back, but it's the thought that counts. Sorry if I'm digressing.

You learn the most from experiencing things the hard way, cause it forces you to come up with a solution for yourself on improving your gameplay. But that's just my opinion.

People should decide for themselves if and how they wanna help (new) players, but me personally am against anykind of help which may cause someone not to understand the game (giving ppl too strong weapons for the part of the game where they are, rushing newbies through the game etc).

When I first started about a year and a half ago (5 months of beta), I just figured crap out on my own. I got to play for the first day or two of release, then due to comp. problems, was off for three to four months. Once I got back on, I found a few people who knew about the game that where working on new characters, and played with them. That was all the help I got.

Now, I will give information sometimes, and on the rare ocassion, due to bordom, will sometimes help people with quests. Other than that, I dont help new players unless I know them from somewhere (usualy friends from the real-world).

When I first started playing all I really wanted was for people to be willing to answer questions. I even tried asking for a while, but sadly no one ever responded. I figured out how to play on my own, despite not having played during Beta. I never begged anyone for anything. Except for answers to my questions. It would have been nice if I had known that the henchies didn't charge up front for their services. That would have saved me a lot of time and frustration. Took me a couple weeks to realize that one since I quested with others so rarely.

Yeah, it would have been nice if people were just willing to answer questions, since we don't all start off knowing everything about a game we have never played.

Pirate, you evidently never met me ingame. I'm more than willing to give information to anyone who asks, even though it has resulted in some flaming.

I think the only time I've ever asked for anything was when I had just arrived in post searing, and had gone out and found a really cool looking wea[pon (well, back then it was cool looking to me, although I can't remember exactly what it was). I was about 30gp short to buy an ID kit and so asked around for different people to give me 10gp each. They very kindly did.

I've also asked for information a few times, for example when I first went to start PvPing, and asked what Faction is. Since then I've also answered that question many times for other people.

Only help I asked for during prophecies was during a mission I would ask what the bonus is. I didnt ask for help in factions because I wasnt the factions noob some people call themselves, I understood how to play the game.

I ask every question you could possibly think of about builds I run in HA and GvG. Most range from the very stupid to the very obvious. Annoying? Indeed.

Of course, if you don't ask they wouln't tell you..

I totally agree with this line of thought.. there used to be a time I didnt mind asking.. but now..? no way

id expect to be treated with the same respect as everyone else. ie no noob/noobie/newb as these have connotations of being inferior and are usually typed with an implied sneer.

you may get a better response from new players if you changed the title to read "new players" instead of newbies

When I was doing Minister Cho's Estate mission with my Tyrian char I happened to meet someone who claimed to be new to GW. All I had to say was "someone new to guild wars, how novel" "i kinda miss those days." Back when every little thing was this new and major discovery. When getting the Fort Ranik bonus seemed like it was super duper!

Well, I answer questions now too, when I can.

My real life friend started to play the game, he made a monk, i helped him quest, i helped him get into the game, i showed him the good monk skills, he decided to play a smiting monk... i told him that isnt very useful to the team as the rest of the team members do the damage and you keep them alive to do that... then he told me that sometimes he started a mission then said, " oh crap brb" or something like that in the middle of the mission then would go and watch tv and they would complete the mission for him.... i told him that doing that is frowned upon heaps and he replied that he was getting bored doing the actual missions..... and quests..... and everything.....

so anyways after me wasting my time helping him and giving him money (although he brought me a coke cos' i said i'd run him around the desert)
he quit the game.

i never completed the desert run....


then a few days after factions i got a very nice cellestial drop which made my storage size to about 400k, he came to my house when i was playing and said, " I'll start playing again if you give me 300k"


I couldnt stop laughing....but he was serious.....

When I started fresh and ignorant, information and some patience and good manners from my companions were valued most.

Some concepts are very different from your run of the mill RPG, so information helps most.
Like armor doesn't drop. When and where to get new equipment options. Collectors and your first belt pouch (easily overlooked). Resurrection and morale boosts. New skills.

Ascalon is surrounded by either noobs, or by people who are making 2nd, 3rd or so on cahracters and are not taking time to anythitng else, so i doesnt mattrer with help at ascalon or even shing jea
