Soloing Oni, Getting Close to 4
Draxanoth
Okay I've been busting my hump trying to figure out how to solo 4 of these bad boys at once. It boggles my mind how much nastier 4 oni are than 8 lvl 22 outcast assasins, but they are and they remind me often... *Laughs*
Anyway, I've managed to find a method to kill 3, it's scary but it works.

16 Tac, 13 Str, 6 Air
Riposte
Deadly Riposte
Gladiator's Defense (E)
Tenai's Wind
On Your Knees!
Healing Signet
Dolyak Signet
Bonetti's Defense
The main idea is to stay in stance at all times, once you aren't they knock the crap out of you. Note if you try this, OYK will suck the adrenaline right out of Bonetti's so I suggest using bonetti's to fill your energy bar before using wind and OYK to recharge gladiator's instantly. I can successfully down 3 Oni this way but 4 still elude me. If anyone can pitch in to make that 4th doable I'll hug you. I tried replacing Tenai's with shield bash to lower the energy req but the recharge time makes it more difficult. It's hard to time the OYK when you have to watch for KD and your health.
BTW I apologize if someone has posted something similar already. I searched for soloing oni but I think oni is below the 4 letter minimum on the search function.

Counter Blow works.
Xaero Gouki Kriegor
dolyak signet, watch yourself, healing signet, riposte, deadly riposte, gladiator defense is all you need, they are probaly more easier then the kirin with their barbs
Jestah
Hmm have you tried that build Xaero? Thing with assassins is most of their damage comes from the skills not the weapons so armour won't help much. I remember people thinking Shields Up would be a smart counter to dagger's piercing damage but in reality it barely slows 'em down at all.
May work if they don't chain skills very often, or maybe you've tried it and I'm being a jackass :P.

their Demonic ability makes them totally nuke themselves out if you have glads defense on, when i was messing around before, they used to drop within one round of glads, if not, u might want to look into On your knees to recharge ur glads
Xaero Gouki Kriegor
i farmed them alot lol, i got bored of it, i could riposte and kill 4 onis really fast, i dont see why they are challenging, but skills? dont tehy need to hit you in order for a attack chain skill to kill you? im sure shields up wont do much, vs peircing damage but it has evasion, i jut remember killing a couple that i accidently agroed really fast cus they got in my way when i was tryn to farm for that sskai sword thing, they didn seem much of a thread
Jestah
Yeah it does have evasion but only against missile attacks. It's only the piercing armour bonus that applies to assassins unless its an assassin with a bow.
I think pure evasion is the way to go as it reduces damage to 25% and completely destroys the chain attack system. Since demonic agility gives them 100% chance to double hit I'd go as N/W with Gladiator's Defense, Spiteful Spirit and whatever other stances/healing you need. Go in with a backup stance, SS em to hell and then put on Glad's. 1 or 2 double damage Spitefuls and a double damage Glad's would probably kill anything before it kills you.

lol my bad, I was half asleep when I posted that. Doesn't make all that much difference without Glad's though, just stick with some other stances and cast 2 or 3 Spitefuls.

another thread we're hoping to work on 6, maybe take a look there
Lint
We are talking about lvl 28 oni right? Bc it takes me 3 rounds of glads to kill them, a group of 4, and Xaero Gouki Kriegor is bragging thats its easy. I have 16 tatis and there hard..
Tartarus1040
Hrm... I have an idea for dealing with them. Head on over to the Monk buld section.
Edit: Err, I meant the Farming section, but I posted in the wrong forum... Hopefully it'll get moved over to Farming, if not you can find it in Monk Forum...

Just tossing this in the air, but has anyone tried using a Mesmer build for Ancestor's Visage and Sympathetic Visage. If their damage mainly comes from skills why not just deny them all together. Of course that's 10 energy every 15 seconds but Bonneti's should fix that right up. Then there is the initial spike damage and if they manage to somehow have the energy for Shadow Shroud the second time you Visage. Maybe with a Zealous Axe.
You could use 12 Illusions and 16 Tactics so all your damage would come from Gladiator(and possible ripostes).
Cyclone Axe
Gladiator's Defense
Bonneti's Defense
(1)Visage
(2)Visage
Healing Sig
Not sure if extra armor is needed for their regular attack but if it is those last two can be Physical Resist and Watch Yourself, I guess.
With Visage lasting 18 seconds you can cast it before you run into the area that they pop up(or you can pop them up then run like hell untill they stop following, then go back.
Running in with Glads should help stop the initial spike and after that they should drain of energy pretty fast, hopefully within the 18 seconds.
Hit Cyclone for 4 Strikes of Adrenaline. That's 20 energy used to start it off. By the time Glad Ends you'll be ready to throw up Bonneti's.
Once full of energy, the first visage should just be wearing off so you can renew it and now you should only be taking regular attack damage.
I haven't taken my warrior there yet but it looks good on paper. I'm not certain how it would work in practice though. Shadow Shroud only lasts for 8 seconds so their first casting of it should be gone by the time you hit your second visage.
If you don't need the Armor those last two slots could be Riposte and Deadly Riposte but you'd have to switch weapons between them and Cyclone for adrenaline.

From what I can see both visage's have a 30 sec recharge so if that's taken into consideration with your bonneti's and glads then you should be ok. Maybe try a shield stance over the elite and take in triple chop over cyclone. But , this probably wouldnt help as your moving away from what you have so far.

yay I can now finally reply here -

Searching normally doesn't work here anyways so it'd be hard to fault you.
I used the above effectively, my additions -
The build is solid - I have no energy problems and actually removed Bonettis. Are you attacking and using a zealous sword? It's not for damage but energy regeneration, if anything adrenaline sometimes is harder to wait for come by while I spam riposite, making sure I have the follow-up for 'on your knees!' after whirlwind [tenai's for chp2'ers]. There is the rare case where I don't get a KD where I would have liked one to refresh Glad's but depending on the circumstances I can usually make it anyways, only a real issue when just 1-2 Onis and unlucky timing - if they do shadows refuge/etc they're not attacking - no KD.
Some ideas for the last slot (extra energy depending) -
Leverage desperate [or drunken] blow with your high tactics and doly sig.
Gives you some attack power you didnt have otherwise
Add 'For Great Justice' to make Adrenaline more readily available
I suppose one could take the extra whirlwind/tenai's for 2 shots if one failed
Variant ideas - lose Dolyak, gain Shield's Up (provided Oni's register as pierce)
+s: regain a lot of attrib points (throw at sword and possible attack last slot), little armor, movement
-s: can now be KD'd by Oni if Horns of the Ox gets through, energy cost, continued coverage not as good
With some tweaking you can work on the fish nearby, if I get a solo build doing Oni and the creeping carp with the scuttle fish monk (the only issue there as most of the build is 'let the mob kill themselves on you') I'll post that.
Couple more things -
Oni spots are pretty easy to determine and sometimes you can creep up on a spot and get a 'split' spawn, back up and take them in smaller groups. Also sometimes you're lucky both by having favor and a good shrine in zone and in a nice spot - I was getting 50hp druid buff for 50gp I enjoyed for Oni hitting.
And of course candycanes are nice if you get whacked for a bit/as you get used to it. Eventually even big spawns you'll probably down a couple and you get dp back fast soloing level 28s. Bring scrolls along for added recovery.

I've done some 2 map ranger trapping on Oni's (in a few spots I know they will spawn), and it works like a charm. They die in traps almost as fast as Grasping Darkness in UW. They seem to hate fire. The only tricky part is rounding them up so they all hit the traps.
CKaz
ok this is warrior, not monk not ranger :b
[besides I dont have either, heh ;]

IRT Ckaz: It's hard to take out dolyaks because of its pure use as a knockdown prevention. The idea is not to get hit but 75% is still 75%. Can't use balanced stance because it'll negate any other stances. I was using a zealous blade, energy still get's somewhat scary at times but for the most part it keeps up. The hard part is healing in between it all. The time to fire off a heal sig is hard to place correctly without messing up the rest of the pattern. Mostly I tried to get best bang for buck outta the Tenai's. Extra second of anti knockdown (str) vs 60 air dmg or somewhere round there. I went with the damage since I really never seem to be on the ground.

Agreed I like Doly here and I use it when I dance with Onis still.
I've also tossed in desperate blow for a way to attack in some situations, which of course mixes in very nicely with Doly. As mentioned I do suggest losing Bonettis if you went zeal sword.
