Ok im not sure about you guys but I have missed many a friend by not knowing the actual person is online.

My Idea is to add a noise or message saying "(charname) has logged on" this could also be used in guilds and have a diffrent text colour so I would know when my guild leader or one of my friends on that is on.

eh, maybe. I personally just check it alot. Press N, look, and press N again to exit. Takes only a few seconds. Its pretty easy and doesn't get in the way of things because it takes so little time. Just check it every 5 minutes and you should be fine.

I like listening to music while playing and don't like to be bothered with game noises. If anything, just make it pop a text message. Actually you could do both and just make them optional so people can decide whether they want them on or not.

I get caught up in alot of projects in the game, and I don't really think to bring up my friends list every 5 minutes. Any kind notification would be fine. This game should cater to burnouts too!

Also I feel strongly that there should be notification for guilds. People don't always make their presense known when they log on.

Just because you have the multitasking capability to go N every now and then while you are busy farming for ectos in UW doesn't mean that everyone else can do the same.

More options in the game client is always good. Just make the notifications optional so the user can turn it off if s/he finds them too annoying.

I often forget to check my friendslist alot (though I do check it) and end up missing the log-ons of people that I need to talk to.

the same way blizzard games work.
Account Name (Character Name) has logged on.

Account Name (Character Name) is away.

If you think it's annoying, add a button to disable it.

Sorry, Guild Wars isn't a dumb instant-messenger chat thingie which goes pling plong whenever someone gets online.

If you are on mission, you're probably too busy to contact the friend who logged in at the moment. If you aren't busy, you just need to press N and take a look. Or are videogame players so lazy that they can't even bother to press ONE button?

I'd eventually get sick of people logging on and off to quickly switch characters or make new pvp characters; thus constantly having to listen to a 'noise' whenever someone goes online or changes status. And it serves little purpose, especially since all you have to do is press one key to get your window to open up to see who is online and who isn't.

if you have the option to turn it on or off, then id like to see it as well. if not, totally against id. people can just set their status to offline and online and so on and spam my screen with that crap.

so, /signed if it would be optional :P

hm...
i think its kinda pointless, like one person sayd, you can always press N and check it, and that is not an excuse, that i farm for ectos in UW, i can press N a lot. Geez...i can press N even if im in the middle of a fight and im only monk. Still idea has some standing ground, if you can put this message, that "Your friend logged on GW" on/off like one other person sayd. Then i would like it. But without it no.
So atm i have to say:

only for the reason if you have a big friends list and lets say 10+ ppl all signed in at once or ppl constantly signing in and out changing characters. Would you really want to hear a buch of pings and pongs(whatever noise they would assign it) cuz so and so signed in or your screen filling up with so and so signed in or set his status to away etc.

That's why it would be OPTIONAL! There's obviously a good number of people who would like to see this implimented so I don't see why they shouldn't make it an option. I hate people, so I don't keep a long friends list and it would be nice to know when the few people I do like are on, I like to be informed about it without having to bring up my friends list all the time.

Then the simple solution would be to download MSN Messenger add them to your friends list and have it run in the background as you play Guild Wars. Problem solved.

What if all the people on my friends list in the game don't have MSN Messenger? Geez, what is it with people that they like to overcomplicate things?!

Well I guess that's too bad then isn't it? If they don't have it then they're out of luck I guess.

Why is it you feel that Anet should see to the needs of people who are too lazy to d/l or use a pre-existing program that already provides this function? Should we also have Anet make an ingame mp3 player? Move all the songs you want into a folder so that you can select them in game and play them at whim? How about a Guildwars daily organizer, clock, calculator, etc. etc. These are all things that already exist on your computer or things that you can d/l and use.

It's really ironic that you say I'm trying to complicate things by telling you to use Messenger, when that's probably the most simple and easy fix. I mean you already say "I like listening to music while playing and don't like to be bothered with game noises..." is that a really complicated procedure? Select the songs you like and press play, sounds complicated! Guess that's why Messenger is also complicated too, double click and have it auto sign-in. Hmmm, I dunno many people who could do that.

Wow, are you really THAT dense? I have MSN messenger, as well as AIM and Y!. That's not the issue here. I can't quite just go around and tell all the people on my friends list to use these so that I can know when they're online. Bottom line, not everybody uses these things so no more excuses about external chat proggies.

Why are you so opposed to in-game notification if it can be optional (meaning if you don't wanna deal with it, you don't have to)? Just about every other online game I've played gave notification when someone on your friends list came online, why not this one?

At least I know you're somewhat attentive, even if only to attempt to shoot my points down. I set my music up before I start playing and don't have to do anything with it in-game. Your persistance in this is really astounding. Before you ask why I'm so persisitant, I just don't like to let people get the last word in when they insult me.

There's things like MSN messenger that you can run, that will play sounds also when your buddies log on. Or Xfire (I think it's called), yahoo messenger, AIM, etc.

First of all nobody is saying you 'have' to tell people that're on your friends list to be on MSN. But it was you who brought up the fact that you 'hate' most people; if that is the fact then one would think you're realtively familiar with people on your 'friends' list and it wouldn't be all that hard for you to ask them if it was okay for you to add them to your MSN messenger.

Secondly you're the one who seems to have the problem here, not I. All you've done is tried to make this revolve around yourself rather than addressing the larger issues of whether or not this would be beneficial for the general Guild Wars gaming public. You bring up the fact that you can't be bothered to check your friends list, that not everyone uses MSN or other chat systems, that you set up your computer for before you start playing, etc. Just because it would benefit you and you'd like to see it doesn't mean you're 'right' and everyone who disagrees with you is 'wrong'.

Everyone who disagreed with you has been pointing out the simple ways around this and that there really is no need for in-game notifications. Several people have already stated that there are already systems in place that can tell you if someone is online; who've also told of programs that you can use that give pop-ups and tell you when someone comes online. Yet for some reason you take this as a personal attack and decide to treat people in a condescending manner; talking down to them as if they're stupid and they need to be pointed in the right direction after being shown that they were in error.

Bottom line, there is already an in-game system that lets you know who is online(your friends list); there are other programs that can tell you who just came online(ie. MSN messenger). And you know what, your 'friends' on your friends list can contact you on their own when they get online. So if your excuse is that you're too busy doing something to check and they're not making a point of contacting you, what exactly are you missing out on?

this feature would improve the way we play the game. it would make it easier to identify when your friends get on. i do check my f list and guild every once and a while, and i still sometimes miss friends by only a few minutes from them getting off.

Of course everything I say here is going to revolve around my own personal desires, I have no problem admitting that. However, what I'm proposing, while it may not be beneficial to the game community as a whole, wouldn't hurt the game community either. On top of that, I'm not the only person who's expressed interest in this idea.

You're also right that I took what you said a bit too personally from the start, so I apologize for that. In the beginning, I was more peeved with Cartman than you, but ended up letting loose on you anyway.

My issue with you is my assumption on your mentality, which seems to be "if I don't need it, then nobody else does either". As with me, your opinion here seems to revolve alot around yourself.

Oh yeah, I found it funny that Matsumi said almost the exact same thing you did.
