Ok im not sure about you guys but I have missed many a friend by not knowing the actual person is online.
My Idea is to add a noise or message saying "(charname) has logged on" this could also be used in guilds and have a diffrent text colour so I would know when my guild leader or one of my friends on that is on.
Friend list is missing on very important thing...

I like listening to music while playing and don't like to be bothered with game noises. If anything, just make it pop a text message. Actually you could do both and just make them optional so people can decide whether they want them on or not.
I get caught up in alot of projects in the game, and I don't really think to bring up my friends list every 5 minutes. Any kind notification would be fine. This game should cater to burnouts too!
Also I feel strongly that there should be notification for guilds. People don't always make their presense known when they log on.

More options in the game client is always good. Just make the notifications optional so the user can turn it off if s/he finds them too annoying.

Sorry, Guild Wars isn't a dumb instant-messenger chat thingie which goes pling plong whenever someone gets online.
If you are on mission, you're probably too busy to contact the friend who logged in at the moment. If you aren't busy, you just need to press N and take a look. Or are videogame players so lazy that they can't even bother to press ONE button?

I'd eventually get sick of people logging on and off to quickly switch characters or make new pvp characters; thus constantly having to listen to a 'noise' whenever someone goes online or changes status. And it serves little purpose, especially since all you have to do is press one key to get your window to open up to see who is online and who isn't.

hm...
i think its kinda pointless, like one person sayd, you can always press N and check it, and that is not an excuse, that i farm for ectos in UW, i can press N a lot. Geez...i can press N even if im in the middle of a fight and im only monk. Still idea has some standing ground, if you can put this message, that "Your friend logged on GW" on/off like one other person sayd. Then i would like it. But without it no.
So atm i have to say:

only for the reason if you have a big friends list and lets say 10+ ppl all signed in at once or ppl constantly signing in and out changing characters. Would you really want to hear a buch of pings and pongs(whatever noise they would assign it) cuz so and so signed in or your screen filling up with so and so signed in or set his status to away etc.

Why is it you feel that Anet should see to the needs of people who are too lazy to d/l or use a pre-existing program that already provides this function? Should we also have Anet make an ingame mp3 player? Move all the songs you want into a folder so that you can select them in game and play them at whim? How about a Guildwars daily organizer, clock, calculator, etc. etc. These are all things that already exist on your computer or things that you can d/l and use.
It's really ironic that you say I'm trying to complicate things by telling you to use Messenger, when that's probably the most simple and easy fix. I mean you already say "I like listening to music while playing and don't like to be bothered with game noises..." is that a really complicated procedure? Select the songs you like and press play,
sounds complicated! Guess that's why Messenger is also complicated too, double click and have it auto sign-in. Hmmm, I dunno many people who could do that.Wow, are you really THAT dense? I have MSN messenger, as well as AIM and Y!. That's not the issue here. I can't quite just go around and tell all the people on my friends list to use these so that I can know when they're online. Bottom line, not everybody uses these things so no more excuses about external chat proggies.
Why are you so opposed to in-game notification if it can be optional (meaning if you don't wanna deal with it, you don't have to)? Just about every other online game I've played gave notification when someone on your friends list came online, why not this one?
At least I know you're somewhat attentive, even if only to attempt to shoot my points down. I set my music up before I start playing and don't have to do anything with it in-game. Your persistance in this is really astounding. Before you ask why I'm so persisitant, I just don't like to let people get the last word in when they insult me.
