Cartography Title Not Necessarily For Cartography?

I've been told that while working towards cartgrapher titles that people have noticed somtimes that the percentage will go up while moving around an area without any new map being revealed (not even a small part, while watching the area closely). Has anyone else noticed this?

The title is Cartographer (well, the cartographer track), which seems to mean that you get percentages for actually creating/opening a part of the map up (something that wasn't shown before).

Is it possible that the percentages are not actually tied to the visibility of the map but rather where you actually step foot in (which most of the time actually does reveal map pieces at the same time, but not necessarily always)?

If so, should this be a bug in relation to the title? I would think that the title implies that you are uncovering pixels (creating you perfect map). I haven't seen this happen (with 100% in Tyrian and Cantha), but others have. Since they seem to be really infrequent (and probably tiny areas), I can see how (if they aren't tied together) someone opened up the visible portion, but a single step further would actually get the percentage.

There is definitely some slack space, but if the percentages aren't tied to visibility then I can see where multiple spots of these things happening could be really annoying and difficult to find.

Any ideas?

This has happened to me once ... heading out to map the southern wall of Frozen Forest, and a few minutes after zoning, without revealing any more of the map, my title track went up by .1%.

Being at 98.4% is horrible.

Yeah, people have definitely mentioned that sometimes you have to stand somewhere for a few seconds before a piece will be revealed as well, as opposed to just passing through.

BTW, I'm not complaining (I have my titles), just getting input on experiences and whether this is desirable or not . I guess the flipside is it can also let some people know the aspects of the current cartographer system.

I'm stuck at 99.1 and I doubt the small amount of lomar pass with net me that .9.....so I do think that it is where you walk as opposed to what you 'opened up' that counts (when I was revealing parts of pockmark flats I went up on the terraces and got another .2 from just running around that area which I had already uncovered, so I think I proved my own point).

It went up because you more than likely had map revealed in the surrounding area, but a small segment was not touched yet. I had to really look (using Photoshop) to unlock the 100%. I had some in Ascalon and Dunes.

I am one of the poor souls of which Cybernigma speaks...

I have done 100% Tyria mapping on my W/R and on my N/Me. Using the same method in Cantha that I used in Tyria has got me to 99.5%. I have even compared my maps to Cybernigma and I do not see any difference.

I did notice while "wall crawling" the other day that I got a 0.1% change and the map did not change visually. I have also noticed that at one place I stopped in a crevice to look at the map and after about two seconds the portion I was facing "popped" on the map.

I have proven on my N/Me that Tyria has about a 0.5% overage (edges in Borliss Pass) and that does not include the arena areas. It seems Cantha does not have quite as much of an overage.

There are indeed a number of sneaky places where you have to stand on an exact spot for a few seconds to get some spot on the map revealed.

I have both Grandmaster titles, and all I can say is after a while, you get a feel for the spots that you should be able to uncover. You learn when to call BS and when not to.

Some related tricks I've learned:

Walk don't run. Many spots even require you to sit still for a bit.

Wall-Crawl with the arrow keys. Don't walk along the wall, walk INTO the wall..HARD.

If you think you 'should' be able to uncover a spot and it won't go, sometimes these work:

Get as close as you can (really dig in) and sit there for 30 seconds

Zoom to first person and try to LOOK at the target spot.

Zoom to first person and look 180 degrees AWAY from the target spot. (I guess my big butt crossed the line

Thanks for the advice, I've been stuck on ~97.2% Tyrian for a week now, time to go get the 2.8% needed.

I now have 100% in Cantha.

I recreated Cybernigma's maps (placed character in same location and used same interface settings) so I was able to overlay the two identical maps. I then flicked back and forth between the two maps and noticed some small areas that could be mapped a bit more.

Some of these areas did not resolve when wall crawling. I had to stop and "press and wiggle" into the crevices to get the map to pop.

I stopped as soon as I got to 100% to check the differences between my maps and Cybernigma's maps and it appears that the overage on Cantha is greater than the overage on Tyria. It would appear that wall crawling alone will not necessarily get you to 100%. If you want to increase your odds of getting 100% then stop at all indentations along the walls and press into them.
