PC Specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
1GB Crucial DDR3200 RAM
200GB western digital hd
geforce 7800gt

First problem:

I dont know why but guild wars seems to keep crashing for me. It doesn't happen at any particular spot and seems to be random. For example, the last 3 crashes were:

In the Keineng Centre whilst walking down some steps
In fort aspenwood (these ones are particularly annoying since i feel ive let others down when i am forced to leave the game)
Just now, in my character selection screen

The event viewer doesn't show anything, apart from a keyboard buffer overflow but I assume that is because Im pressing ctrl alt del several times whilst GW has crashed and it can't take any more information.

Im pretty sure I have the latest drivers (84.21) and I haven't overclocked my CPU at all so Im not sure whats wrong. Any help would be appretiated.

Second problem:

Sometimes when I load up GW, the screen goes blank for a bit, then I get a box/prompt appearing telling me to make sure I am using Direct X 8, even though Im using direct x 9.0c. Anyone know what that is about?

For your second problem, make sure you're not using the -DX8 switch for your shortcut to Gw.exe. About the random crashing, I imagine that has something to do with it as well. If you're not using the -DX8 switch, then I would reinstall GW on your computer and see if that corrects the problem. You can run a dxdiag also (click start, run, type dxdiag, hit enter) and make sure it's everything is current.

Just so you know - the actual error is "unable to initialize 3d output. please check that you have direct x 8 and an updated driver"

@matsumi - Nope I dont have that direct x 8 stuff

@Juicy Shake - I very much doubt its my card overheating (though I will check temp). Plus my last crash was on the character selection screen and Im sure that wouldn't be putting my card under much pressure.

Sounds like your GFX Drivers, -- you need to remove them TOTALLY using add/remove programs - then DriverCleaner..

re-start your machine, let windows install its default ones..

then download the lastest, and install them... restart after

once installed, download and install the latest directX (AFTER GFX DRIVERS)

this should fix it... just one more reason i hate nvidia...

Hi

You say "after GFX drivers", so they are the correct ones then? Cause I use the 'geforce and tnt2' drivers, not the GTX ones cause I thought they had some unique stuff for GFX cards only.
