During the very low level section of the game namely Shing Jea Island where the enemy are of low health, I would recommend using degen as a good way to kill them fast.

Jagged strike can be bought for 50 gold and 1 skill point it causes bleeding and recharges in 4 seconds, that means you can comfortably use it often enough to good effect.

I used Jagged Strike/Iron Palm/Wild Strike/Twisting Fangs..

The above combo allows you to use, Jagged-> Wild Strike. while the above Iron Palm recharges, Twisting Fangs is used to take out those higher health boss mobs or some of the higher armoured targets.

Currently I use Jagged Strike/Iron Palm/Falling Spider/Twisting Fangs on my starter Assassins as I am used to the recharges and they don't bother me as much, the first combo is a good one to start once you have some cash.

In terms of protection, think about buying a new set of armour with +15 chest and legs whilst attacking, and you may get lucky enough to find a dagger with +5 armour bonus too. Think about doing the Warrior secondary quests first and using Watch Yourself to further boost your armour. Once you finish the warrior quests and grab some new secondary profession ones, decline to use the new profession skills and keep WY on your bar, you can complete all the secondary quests this way whilst keeping WY.

Henchies I use are Warrior/Shock/Healer. Send the warrior in first a good way to practice for the higher level play.

Avoid the archer and ele boss at first if you are worried about dying, if not go ahead

** on second thought, it seems you are after general builds rather than starter advice in which case there are a few good basic builds on this very forum.
